Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

In DC in general, full demons are evil on a metaphysical level, but there’s still a spectrum. There’s a world of difference between Etrigan and Neron, for instance, even if they both are technically evil. Keep Trigon.

No to Shibu.

Keep Trigon.

Also, I'd like to encourage any character sheets with redirects in the Comic Book namespace to be replaced with the actual links to the character pages.

I realize it seems like effort, but it is worthwhile effort.

I'm gonna request radio silence between now and Thursday afternoon because I've got a big deadline I gotta meet tomorrow and I'm gonna be busier than I have been almost all year crunching down on the work.

I have oooone more Marvel guy I wanna get up before then, since Ogotai seems a unanimous keep. Since the "scumfuck Russian" trope seems to be going nowhere anytime soon, lemme get another from that niche.

What has "Ivan the Terrible" done?

Real name Ivan Pushkin, "the Terrible" is the crime lord Big Bad of the Maverick miniseries, featuring eponymous mutant superhero David North. Ivan is the Russian Kingpin, but his brand of cruelty makes the Kingpin's look "like a pussycat's." He's a total sadist who operates a dungeon called the "Cooler" he dumps liabilities into so they can waste away and die over a period of weeks.

Introduced having a Canadian investigator and soon after the man's boss murdered by his assassins—"Hammer" and "Sickle" (sigh)—Ivan is pissed off by Maverick's interference, so he captures him and leaves him in the hands of a sadistic mad scientist who subjects Maverick to awful Mind Rape, making him relive his worst experiences over and over until he breaks and he's brainwashed into an assassin. He gets better, which annoys Ivan; he tosses the mad scientist in the Cooler to die, then chains up Maverick down there as well with only the scientist's corpse and another broken superhero for company. Ivan later bends Maverick by threatening to shoot the child of his own mistress, a mistress whom he's tortured and abused into feeble, servile loyalty; he mangles her hands simply for interrupting him at one point, and yet Ivan's broken the poor woman so bad she sees nothing wrong with it.

All of this is nothing compared to Ivan's ultimate scheme, though; he plans to rob an A.I.M. cache full of missiles, having his men massacre a facility full of men in the process of stealing them. These missiles contain a particularly virulent strain of anthrax that will agonizingly kill millions to billions (the comic posits both at separate points) if they're deployed. And Ivan wants to go apeshit with them on friend and foe alike to make himself the most powerful criminal in on the planet.

The anthrax plot is foiled, but unfortunately, as of this writing, it's been years since Ivan's last appearance and he's a free man.

Any mitigating factors?

Remember how I was slightly wary about Khruul given how nasty Marvel crime lords can be? Ivan is the literal top of his own niche. The comic's claim that he's nastier than Kingpin isn't just hype; ignore his repugnant personal cruelty, Ivan's plan to kill up to seven figures (at absolute minimum) with fucking anthrax of all things—a disease the comic helpfully spells out is one of the most excruciating pathogens ever, noting it'll take days of agony for most to perish—puts him above many literal supervillains.

Obviously no redeeming qualities. Even his seeming fondness for Hammer and Sickle is neutered when he brutally manhandles them and beats them over simply ignoring his orders.

Conclusion?

Easy keeper. See you all on Thursday!

[tup] for Ivan "the Terrible" Pushkin.

I'll be back later tonight or sometime tomorrow to go into detail about the third Wings of Fire arc. A lot of shit has come up today I need to take care of first, so there's gonna be a delay before I get into those books.

Yes to Ivan

I got a cut request today. I previously asked to give until the new expansion reveal for World of Warcraft to see if anything new would be revealed on Denathrius and his master plan. The new expansion will be about dragons and doesn't look like it feature him or his Dreadlords at all.

This means we currently have to operate under the assumption that every bad thing he did was for the purpose of seeing the Jailer's well intentioned grand plans come to fruition. The game makes it absolutely clear he had full knowledge of his brother's overall schemes as shown mostly in the cut scene below.

The game also implies he has his own plans down the line, but because we know nothing of that yet, what information we do have means he has to be cut and any Dreadlords are disqualified by extension for their absolute loyalty to their master.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

Though that reminds me: Ravok, weren't you gonna discuss Omega Red? I think that series with him has been done over two weeks.

[tup] to Ivan.

I've noticed that one of the CM entries (namely, DIO from Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure The7th Stand User) could need an minor update, because the Chaos Mode addition could add one more atrocity to his misdeeds: In Chaos Mode, there's a chance that he'll send Joey Operetta to kidnap the protagonist's family.

Sorry, I've been away for a while.

Considering most people reactions to Blaine from Dumbing of Age were lukewarm at best, with the majority abstaining, I guess it is best to drop the application.

I'll try to read the last entries and vote a little later.

Hmm? I'll check I guess. I assumed that in case of a majority of abstentions it was a disqualification.

So far, for Blaine:

[tup] Libraryseraphn, nwotyzal, TellAll111 (tentative), CloisterTheStupid (tentative), YobabyColin (went from yes to abstain to yes), ASghhrv6ub, DrUnknown (Total: 7)

[tdown] DemonDuckofDoom (Total: 1)

Abstain: TheMadCr0w, miraculous, WetFlannels, AustinDR (Total: 4)

OK, I genuinely thought there were a lot more abstentions.

Well, if this is enough, I'll do a write-up later this week. In the meanwhile, I'll take a look at the previous applications.

[tup]Ivan, Ogotai Khan, Red’s Grandma, Hunter J, Mo Tae Gu

[tdown]Jacqueline Natla, Johann, Nitta

Abstain: Shibusawa (slightly leaning no)

Keep Trigon
