Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Coming back from my hiatus briefly to say [tup] to Zach and [tup][tup][tup][tup] to Infinity Ultron (really just one [tup] but I knew he'd be a keeper). Another CM for Ross Marquand!

Hope everyone's keeping well.

Edit: [up] I prefer the first image, although it's a bit ambiguous without context. The second one could, out of context, be a hero wrecking a villain up.

Edit 2: is anyone else in the series apart from Red Skull worth discussing?

Yes to Ultron and Zach.

Alrighty, in advance and in honour of All Hallows' Eve/"Erev Yom Kodashim", here are my final contribution to the NH effortposts before Mir takes over.

What is the Work?

Night Prince is a Spin-Off series from Night Huntress.

Once Burned, Twice Tempted, and Bound by Flames are the first three books in the series.

Leila Dalton finds herself involved in a feud between the vampires Vlad Tepesh and Mihaly Szilagyi after being attacked by other vampires.

Who is Mihaly Szilagyi and what has he done?

Mihaly Szilagyi is a vampiric Hungarian noble introduced in Once Burned who serves as Vlad Tepesh's arch-nemesis and former father-in-law.

While serving in the court of the King of Hungary, Szilagyi had Vlad imprisoned, stopping short of killing him out of fear of repercussions from Vlad's eventual ally Mencheres. Eventually, Szilagyi made it seem like he needed Vlad's help conquering Wallachia from the Ottomans, only to betray them to the Ottomans, resulting in numerous deaths.

Seemingly dying at Vlad's hands after having Vlad's heir assassinated, Szilagyi resurfaces years later, attempting to have the psychic Leila Dalton abducted.

Subsequently tracking Leila to a nightclub, Szilagyi has the club burned down while his men attempt to capture Leila, endangering several patrons.

Eventually, Szilagyi captures Leila's mentor, Marty, and subjects him (and eventually Leila) to prolonged torture until they both escape.

Szilagyi fakes his death once again by destroying a Medieval Castle formerly belonging to Vlad.

In Twice Tempted, an absent Szilagyi has a crowded carnival bombed in an attempt on Layla's life, resulting in 5 (seemingly) confirmed dead and 3 missing.

In Bound by Flames Szilagyi has Vlad's residence massacred, and detonates a mountain, resulting in a high death toll.

In the aftermath, Subsequently, Szilagyi tries to have Leila raped on camera repeatedly as a means of antagonizing Vlad, only for the would-be rapist to fake the act until Vlad comes to the rescue.

Later, Szilagyi has a necromancer, later revealed as Vlad's stepson/nephew Mircea, try to make Leila kill herself, resulting in mutual injuries as a result of one getting injured.

When the protagonists are flying to Slovenia to confront him, Szilagyi has their jet crashed, resulting in the deaths of several civilians.

Eventually, it is revealed that Szilagyi's current lair is Vlad's former holding cell in Turkey. In the final confrontation, he begs for a swift end as Vlad kills him.

After his death, it is revealed that Szilagyi had rigged his lair to explode in the hopes of killing Vlad in the event of his own death.

Mitigating Factors?

There is a moment where Leila and Vlad take pity on him and finish him off quickly, but that does not serve to portray him as worthy of sympathy. Otherwise, he is a craven, ambitious weasel who uses his daughter and others to further his own personal gain.

Heinousness?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: this series is no stranger to violence, with antagonists such as:

  • A human who drugs and rapes a few women.
  • Vampiric Human Traffickers led by Hennessey, as well as some of his clients, led by Governor Ethan Oliver (who bombs a hospital).
  • A Ghoul who tries to start wars between species (Apollyon)
  • A demon who possesses bodies, imitates dead loved ones to taunt the heroes, and slaughters many people (Xaphan).
  • A demon king who consumes souls (Dagon).
  • Cultists (Fenkir and Rani) who worship the aforementioned demon king, force people to choose between worship and death, keep sex slaves, perform human sacrifice, and have a major body count.
  • A vampire who threatens Cat's family in an attempt to possess her.
  • A witch-hunter, Heinrich Kramer, who has raped and murdered countless innocent women because he believes women to be the root of all evil (AKA, my most hated CM candidate to date).
  • A former CIA operative who performed inhumane experiments on vampires and ghouls, as well as the backer of said operative, who has connections in high places.
  • Dr. Louis LaLaurie and Mrs. Delphine LaLaurie, cannibalistic slavers.
  • Patra, who raised an army of the undead and killed several people, and assisted Max Williams in his attempted murder of Cat.
Szilagyi himself blows up a mountain, crashes a jet, is responsible for the death and endangerment of countless Romanian citizens and others, and has targeted several of Vlad's loved ones. There is a pattern of betrayal, pettiness and dishonour spanning centuries. Pass.

Verdict?

Viable Contender, and father-in-law of the century.

As for Into the Fire, just for posterity, it marks the first appearance of Dagon.

Now, Dagon doesn't seem to do anything particularly heinous in this novel from what I see (although I may have missed something). However, he will reappear in the Night Rebel series, which ~Tropers/miraculous is handling.

Regarding other candidates, none of them do anything impressive other than threaten Vlad's stepson, Leila, and other people Vlad cares about.

captainmarkle, I have seen the series so I could give my thoughts on the other characters, Red Skull probably does technically count but I am not sure if he does enough different to warrant a separate writeup, The Collector is probably the next closest one but he suffers from Offscreen Villainy, Hank Pym and Killmonger are given clear redeeming qualities (heinousness is also debatable).

Okay I rarely post in this thread but I just had to come back for "What If…?" and Ultron. A big [tup] for Infinity Ultron.

I'm surprised that there will be more candidates, because I think anyone else either doesn’t do enough or their end goals are to vague. So, I’m genuinely looking forward to the other EPS. Maybe they will convince me otherwise.

Also, I’m curious about the heinous standard. Do we threat “What if…?” as a standalone work with no connection to the larger MCU or does the heinous standard of the whole MCU applies to it, too?

And let's not forget the other EP: For [tup] Zach Sanford. Maybe – and this is already a huge stretch– you could make an excuse for him because his first victims sound like Asshole Victims but murdering someone for not admitting their drug addiction, shows that he’s just a horrible human being who looks for an excuse to kill. Not to mention the whole part about setting the maze on fire to kill most of the town.

Majorly easy Yes Infinity Ultron...he, quite literally, matches the worst of the worst of the proper MCU standard in a single shot where he casually decimates an entire universe by devouring it lmao and he just keeps getting worse. Terrific variation of one of my favorite comic villains, and a great proposal, Lighty!

Sure to Zach as well!

Oh, and also, just as a random sidenote: What If...? basically all but confirmed that Zola had backup copies in the mainline MCU films. They're sort of each treated as their own, individual person, but the mere fact that Zola had backup copies kind of makes his "Villainous Valor sacrifice" in Winter Soldier a bit less....mmmmmm sincere. Legitimately means very little in the grand scheme of things, but it does make me even more comfortable with his CM listing than ever before [lol]

First things first: I wish Scraggle a speedy recovery and please, please be patient everyone.

I think we're good keeping What If...? as its own standard for the time being. They pretty much just wanna do their own thing rather than setting up future films if Showrunner A C Bradley is to be believed.

That being said, yes to Super Ultron God Super Ultron. It almost feels like they specifically glossed over his relationship with the Twins because of how divisive that was - not to mention hewing him more in line with his general depiction and him not doing those Whedon quips nearly as much. God he's so much better.

A late yes also to the Corn Dog Symbiote. I am surprised Cletus was given legit redeeming qualities. I think we all were. But eh, filmmakers do their own thing for better or worse. I think the Carnage Symbiote is fine even if we take the MCU standard into account - Mysterio has way more resources with his drone army than Red Goo Guy.

And another late yes to Catherine Balzac. I have wondered in the past if the old Mission Impossible Series had keepers.

EDIT: [up] Ah, thanks for reminding me! Yeah, if the whole "Backups" thing is canon in the main MCU, then I agree - the only real objection to Zola keeping that held water has been sunk. That being said, I don't know if this is properly canon... buuuuuut like Ravok says it doesn't really matter anymore. It's more neat trivia.
