Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] to Carol. I suspect Castle might have some other unique keepers too that were missed.

While I haven't seen this play or the 1995 movie, I have a question about this sentence at the end of this Richard III entry: "Richard is left alone, deserted by all, and at the end, he admits that even he has nothing but hatred for himself." Is this expressing remorse or regret since he says he hates himself? It's weird.

Could someone explain to me please?

Also, for the film, I added Richard III & Tyrell to CM Team Ups. That all they go to?

[up]While I haven't seen the movie, I'm also surprised given it's Dennis Hopper as the villain in a dystopian film.

@Austin Sounds good. I gotta brush up on my Shakespeare.

So with Richard III and Tyrell, they're just a Team Up? They're not a Versus too?

RE: Imperial Majesty XO

On a related subject, the Robocop 2/Cain entry, introduces Hob three times.

Here's the entry

  • Complete Monster: Cain, the psychotic Nuke cult leader, has a long list of crimes. These including blowing up a drug treatment center just because they try to cure people of their addiction to Nuke; eviscerating one of his drug-buying cops after RoboCop has forced him to reveal the location of one of the labs making Nuke, an action which his accomplices, Hob and girlfriend Angie are both Forced to Watch and horrified by; willingly using children as soldiers in his gang; shooting before removing from his limo an illegal immigrant worker from the drug lab, pleading not to be turned over the police; and, along with his gang, dismembering RoboCop. When he's turned into RoboCop 2, in exchange for a big container of Nuke, he charges his former gang's hideout and kills almost everyone there except the Mayor, who manages to escape. He twists Angie's head around and fatally shoots Hob, a young boy who was in his employ, leaving him for dead. He later without provocation tries to kill RoboCop to settle the score, with numerous civilians and police officers getting killed during the final battle.

Here is my proposed rewrite that streamlines the entry.

  • Complete Monster: Cain, the psychotic Nuke cult leader, has a long list of crimes. These including blowing up a drug treatment center just because they try to cure people of their addiction to Nuke; using his protege, uses a young boy named Hob as a as a soldier in his gang; eviscerating one of his drug-buying cops after RoboCop has forced him to reveal the location of one of the labs making Nuke, an action which Hob and Cain's girlfriend Angie are both Forced to Watch and horrified by; shooting before removing from his limo an illegal immigrant worker from the drug lab, pleading not to be turned over the police; and, along with his gang, dismembering RoboCop. He twists Angie's head around and fatally shoots Hob, leaving him for dead. He later without provocation tries to kill RoboCop to settle the score, with numerous civilians and police officers getting killed during the final battle.

Does everyone like the rewrite, if so I'll put it on the drafts page?

[up][up]Looks good. When I did that rewrite years ago, I just mainly focused on adding things and not taking them away. You have the word "uses" or "using" in the sentence about Hob twice as well as twice you use "as a" in the same sentence too.

Ah looks like I left in a "uses" from the original entry, I fixed that.

  • Complete Monster: Cain, the psychotic Nuke cult leader, has a long list of crimes. It should be better now.

I have a bit of a quote replacement the quote on The Crow isn't the best I think we should use the full quote instead.

"Well, well, well. Devil's Night is upon us again. Thought we'd throw a little party, start a bunch of fires, make a little profit. Problem is, it's all been done before, you see what I'm saying? Wrong, that's the best reason to quit. The only reason to quit. Man has an idea. The idea attracts others, like-minded. The idea expands, the idea becomes an institution. What was the idea? You see, that's what's been bothering me, boys. When I tell you when I used to think about the idea itself, it put a big ol' smile on my face. You see gentlemen, greed is for amateurs. Disorder, chaos, anarchy: now that's fun! What about it? I started the first fires in this goddamn city. Before I knew it every charlatan and shit heel was imitating me. You know what they got now? Devil's Night greeting cards. Isn't that precious. The idea has become the institution, boys. Time to move along. No, I want you to set a fire so goddamn big the gods will notice of us again, that's what I'm saying. I want all of you boys to be able look me straight in the eye one more time and say 'Are we having fun or what?!" Top Dollar.

What do you think?

Alright, so with the recent inclusion of Deok-su from Squid Game, I’m going to propose someone for re-litigation that I've been sitting on for a while. His cutting never really sat right with me, and this has given me the push I needed to EP him again.

Presenting: Xavier Chavez from Saw II.

Who is Xavier Chavez? What does he do?

Here's a quick rundown. Xavier is a drug dealer who finds himself trapped with a group of other people in a house as part of one of Jigsaw's twisted games. The house is being pumped with deadly sarin gas and the group must go through various traps in order to obtain antidotes before they succumb to the poison.

Eventually it's worked out that each person has a number written on the back of their neck, which all together make up the combination to a safe found in the starting room, which contains an antidote. Xavier, being a sociopathic brute opts to start killing the others or otherwise leaving them to die so that he can get their numbers (as opposed to, you know, doing anything else).

When the group gets to the trap meant for Xavier, searching for a key in a pit filled with used needles meant to act as a karmic punishment for his status as a drug dealer, Xavier is too much of a coward to go through it himself. Instead, he grabs a small, waify girl named Amanda (she's important to the series later, but not to this EP) and throws her into the pit, forcing her to find the key instead.

His rampage is finally stopped when his throat is slashed in self-defense by the young Daniel.

Is he heinous enough?

Here's where the issues come up. Xavier appears in only one film, and has a relatively low body count compared to Jigsaw and his apprentices. However, there are several things to consider here. First and foremost, when compared to them, Xavier has almost no resources whatsoever. He's notably the only antagonist in the series who's just one of Jigsaw's test subjects and has no affiliation with him whatsoever.

I brought up Deok-su earlier because he and Xavier are two very similar villains. They have no affiliation with the main antagonists of their respective series's, and are essentially victims of them the same as the heroes are. But what makes them stand out and keeps them from being sympathetic in any way is that despite being subjected to these horrific "games," they both go above and beyond in terms of sadistic ruthlessness.

I think what really pushes Xavier over the line is this one scene where he and another man are talking, and the man talks about how he's got enemies outside the house trap, and if he doesn't make it out of there, those enemies will go after the man's family because they can't find him. Xavier murders him shortly after this exchange without a second thought. He knows that he's effectively endangering a (presumably) innocent family but he doesn't give a damn.

Jigsaw and his apprentices each have some sort of mitigating factor that keeps them from being CMs themselves. Jigsaw himself is a Well-Intentioned Extremist, although his philosophy is deeply flawed. Amanda comes from an abusive home and suffers from emotional instability as a result of this and her drug abuse. Hoffman was initially motivated by getting revenge on his sister's murderer. Xavier? He was already a scumbag before crossing paths with Jigsaw and only becomes a bigger one during his game.

Does he have any redeeming factors?

None. His actions go far beyond "just trying to survive," and despite being another of Jigsaw's victims, he is 0% sympathetic. He was put behind bars by a Dirty Cop, and after he learns that said cop's son is another victim in the house, he becomes extra motivated to kill him as an act of revenge. While the cop is a corrupt asshole, Xavier has already murdered several people by the time he finds out that the man's son is there, so it doesn't work as a Freudian Excuse.

Verdict?

I've always considered him a keeper, personally.

Write ups

  • The City Beautiful: Mr. James Whitby is a rich, well-respected gambler in Chicago who's secretly a rabid antisemite. Whitby looks down on the Jewish population of the city and wishes to purge it of them, which leads to him allying with the likeminded insane Serial Killer Grigori. Whitby helps Grigori in his murders of innocent Jewish boys while planning to take their evil even bigger. Whitby plans to burn down the Jewish Corner of Chicago and when confronted about how this could destroy the entire city and possibly kill thousands, only smugly sneers that as a gambler he doesn't care.

  • Mystic Knoll: Abigial Thornwood is a monstrous teenage sociopath who has tapped into the natural power of her area. Abigail plans to purge anyone who's even slightly offended her and their entire families and to this end, concocts a dark scheme. Magically seducing a man into giving her a child, Abigail warps her child into a monstrous and mindless Jersey Devil, intending to use her to wipe out all of her perceived enemies. The painful transformations into the Devil haunts Abigail's daughter and causes her pain, with Abigial herself body jacking her daughter to take her revenge personally when she's hindered.
