Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

True, but that way it seems, Apollyon was never really shown any type of kindness or good. Sure there was peace, but that was after the war between the vikings, knights and samurais and when peace did come, it was already too late since her belief has been too twisted to fix. While it can't excuse her acts, I feel like there some uncertainties since we don't know if she can comprehend good and evil.

You misunderstand. Simula explicitly states IN THE WORK ITSELF. That she DOESN'T feel guilt. It is a direct quote from the character. I can even provide a link if you wish.

EDIT: Actually, rewatching the scene again, Simula DOESN'T actually mention anything about wanting to feel guilt. So it's possible that THAT part was Word of God, or me just misremembering.

In anycase, I think I'll provide a couple links so you guys can see for yourself.

First, the original effort post.

Jeminya (Simula's sister), talking about what Simula was like as a child (Scene ends at 55:50)

Simula talking about her boredom, disgust and lack of emotions (Her most humanising moment, not sure if it's really humanising enough to keep her from being a complete monster, but see for yourselves) (Scene ends at 43:59)

Simula's worst crimes (Scene ends at 1:17:48)

Slight re-potholing:

  • The Shawshank Redemption
    • Warden Samuel Norton seems like a stern but affable prison bureaucrat before he reveals the true extent of his immorality and corruption. He sets up a scheme to underbid public construction projects with cheap prison labor and pockets the buy-off money from the desperate private contractors he blackmails, using Andy's financial knowledge to launder the illegal money. When a new inmate named Tommy has proof of Andy's innocence, Norton has him shot in the yard by Captain Byron T. Hadley and has the murder passed off as an escape attempt. He throws Andy in solitary confinement for a month, then threatens to destroy everything Andy has built to improve Shawshank over the past 20 years in prison and make sure that he'll be handed over to the rapists again, before giving Andy another month in isolation just to think about it.
    • Bogs Diamond is the leader of a prison gang called "The Sisters", who prey on weaker inmates to rape them again and again for as long as they like. Bogs sets his sights on Andy and together with his gang makes repeated attempts to rape and brutalize Andy over the course of several years, succeeding about half the time. When Andy tries to fight off the latest attempt, Bogs threatens to shiv Andy through the skull if he doesn't give him and his buddy oral sex. When Andy talks him out of it by playing on his ignorance, he beats Andy straight into the infirmary for a month instead.

I'll de-pothole the Prison Break ones today.

I mentioned Apollyon’a excuse in my original EP. It’s not mitigating and it specifically gave her a hatred of ‘rules’ applying to her.

I’m still leaning yea to Simula and a yes to the others here

As promised:

  • Wyatt Mathewson, from season 4, is a hitman working for the Company under its leader General Jonathan Krantz. He's the worst and most chilling assassin the Company has to offer, with nearly every scene involving him killing someone or torturing people to death while talking to them in a calm, soothing tone. He kills or tortures many people (mainly, anybody working against Krantz); this includes women and even murdering Cameron Mahone and blowing the child's head off post-mortem to mutilate the corpse just to spite his father Alexander Mahone further. When he's given intel on Scofield and his crew by Roland, he promises to give Roland $1 million and to let him go in exchange for the others. Once there, Wyatt progressively shoots Roland in the kneecap, then his thigh, and then in his stomach to watch him bleed out.
  • Christina Rose Scofield, who first appears in season 4 but is mentioned earlier, is a high-ranking leader of the Company and along with General Krantz is revealed to have been behind most of the events in the show. A sociopath who only cares about her own advancement, she sacrifices her whole family: She abandoned both her sons Lincoln and Michael while they were kids without saying a word; rejected her husband after he turned on the Company and had him hunted down; and arranged for her adopted son Lincoln (whom she despised for his relative lack of intelligence) to be framed and executed for a staged political assassination of Terence Steadman. She tries to kill General Krantz to steal a device called "Scylla" and sell it for its profitable military use, then kills her conspirator when he botches the hit. She pretends to sell the technology to a renowned Indian scientist/politician, but instead has him assassinated in public and frames Lincoln again, along with Michael, Mahone and Don Self. Christina intends to unleash a decades-long war between India and China so she can sell the tech to both sides for a quick profit, knowing that it would quickly escalate into a global conflict. When Michael steals Scylla back from her, she kidnaps Lincoln and gives Michael an ultimatum for its return by shooting Lincoln in the lung to watch him die slowly. She later tries to kill Michael when he's ruined her plans one too many times.

I have a candidate from the 2016 Sci-Fi horror film Bedeviled

'Who is he? What does he do?"

Mr. Bedevil is a Monster Clown spirit who resides in the "Mr. Bedevil" app, a Siri-like app which he uses as a gateway to interact with our universe.

His MO is tormenting unsuspecting victims who download the app using manifestations of their worst fears, eventually killing themselves from the fear, it works something like Freddy Krueger's night realm powers. He has been around since the dawn of man, so naturally he has done this to a lot of people.

The film opens with Nikki dying from a shock-induced heart attack caused through weeks of torment at the hands of Mr. Bedevil.

Following her funeral, Nikki's boyfriend, Cody, and best friend, Alice, along with Alice's boyfriend, Gavin, and friends, Haley and Dan, all receive invites to download Mr. Bedevil. Having downloaded it, Mr. Bedevil terrorizes the group and leaves weird marks on their bodies in the shape of the app.

The group tries to go to the police with their concerns after the app uploads a sex tape made by Haley and Dan, only for Mr. Bedevil to possess the police, making the application impossible to stop through normal means.

Afterward, Mr. Bedevil tricks Gavin into coming to Alice's house using Alice's voice. Where he proceeds to murder him by scaring him to death with clowns. He then murders Hayley and Dan using their fears.

Cody discovers that it is possible to uninstall Mr. Bedevil from their phones by writing code that will accomplish this task. Because the app is capable of adapting and rewriting its firmware, Cody can only use his program when Mr. Bedevil enters the physical world by first connecting to the phone’s hardware. Alice and Cody set a trap for Mr. Bedevil at a warehouse using two separate computer stations. They manage to successfully uninstall Mr. Bedevil from Alice's phone but are unable to do the same for Cody's phone, as the second computer station's uninstall program fails to penetrate the additional security on his phone, resulting in Cody's death. The film ends with Alice attending college and face timing her mother, only to discover that she is now using the Mr. Bedevil app herself.

Mitigating Factors

His reason for murdering people through their worst fears is that he feels disgusted with how complacent today's youth has become with technology, believing they have forgotten how to fear.

Moral agency? He is a paranormal entity but nothing really implies that he lacks moral agency and unlike the Bye Bye Man he has plenty of personality and a clear motive, completely averting being a GDV

So I was checking character pages for Blizzard characters who count, GDV is listed for Amon in Starcraft which is explicitly wrong and Arcturus Mengsk in his character page is listed as though his status as a fallen hero depends on the writer which is again, explicitly wrong since all that it says is he showed psychotic tendencies at a young age but the novel that states this was more going in detail as to his personality traits because psychotic tendencies doesn't inherently mean insane or evil. So I was wondering if it was alright if those would be burned because they don't seem accurate and I say this as somebody who understands just about all there is to understand about Blizzard's games and expanded material.

[tup] To previous candidates. Another forgotten gem for you all. Hope some of you are familiar with the Evil Dead series.

What is the setting? Evil Dead Regeneration follows the story of the one and only, Ash Williams, in a what-if scenario had he not travelled back in time. Following the brutal deaths of his friends at the hands of the Deadites, Ash was placed in an asylum for the criminally insane, and there he first met his new Arch-Enemy, Reinhard.

Who is Reinhard? Reinhard is the chief psychiatrist at the asylum, and while he is incredibly intelligent, he was also extremely cruel, which was only surpassed by his arrogance, viewing other people around him; both staff and inmates, as being mentally inferior. Obtaining the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, Reinhard used an ADHD patient, Sam, as a guinea pig and tortured him for two years, transforming him into a half-Deadite, all in an attempt to fully understand the book so he could reshape the world in his own image. Intending on releasing the Deadites in the asylum, Reinhard read the book in his secret lab, ending the lives of nearly everyone there.

Reinhard proceeded to open multiple more portals around the human plane, claiming the lives of even more innocent people. With the book giving him the abilities of a powerful Deadite, Reinhard changes his intentions of reshaping earth to wiping out humanity itself with an army of Deadites. Kidnapping Ash's lawyer, Sally, Reinhard orders her to record everything she sees, since "history must know the details of man's extinction'', wishing to use Sally as a sacrifice to give him even more greater power. Before Reinhard can kill Sally, Ash and Sam arrive and succesfully defeat Reinhard. This concludes with Sam kicking and punching Reinhard's dead body, angered by all he had done to his mind and body.

Freudian Excuses? Zero, a complete Jerkass even before getting his hands on the book.

Heinous? As the Big Bad, not only does he surpass every other antagonist in terms of cruelty, but also everyone from the original movie trilogy (with the possible exception of the Kandarian Demon since he is the Greater-Scope Villain), ironic considering he is the only human that Ash has ever faced.

Conclusion? You decide.
