This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Welcome to Edit Banned. You should've stopped adding pre-hidden zero-context examples long before you hit six notifiers about them. Please be mindful of notifiers and heed them sooner. Since the edits where you didn't hide entries for other people to finish have sufficient context, it's safe to assume you know how to write them. The wiki is not for "work in progress" pages and other unfinished content, including individual entries. All right?

~Wandering Browser [2]

The indentation problem with the edit here has a single second-level bullet right under the first. It resembles a "reply" to the first bullet point or an attempt to use the ** as a new paragraph marker, neither of which is allowed. Once you're writing second ** or third ** level bullet points, they should never be alone. Writing the entry as

  • Non-Linear Character: The Zarovan Vistani tribe exist outside of time, and can casually interact with people whenever they choose. Whilst it makes them master seers even amongst the Vistani, it also means that even other Vistani are frightened of them. This trait is so integral to them that even Mortu Zarovans, Vistani who have had most of their magical traits burned out of them by a triggered curse, are still partially unstuck from time, causing them to switch from eerie prescience to slow, spacey behavior, depending on whether they're perceiving the past or future. In combat, they even need to test each round to see how well their personal time-zone is synched up with reality's, which can result in potentially strong bonuses — or equally strong penalties. Notably, this allows Madame Eva to continue interacting with players despite the fact she was technically killed by Jacqueline Montarri. She even used this ability to taunt Jacqueline Montarri after she was transformed into her cursed form.

fixes the issue easily. Does that make sense?

If you're confused by How Indexing Works, please Ask The Tropers or ask on What index(es) should this go on?, or respond to the sender of the notifier asking for instructions/clarification.

The crosswicking notifiers were from years ago, so can I trust you know how to crosswick examples?

~Stuffed Ninja [3]

You have a lot of notifiers about indentation and crosswicking, so you're correct in your theories there. The All Take and No Give entry you linked to has fine indentation, actually.

Condensing it into a single bullet point is also okay.

Can you fix the below example so indentation is correct? Post it here.

  • Nightmare Fuel: The "Flea" video."Flea", which manages to make innocent small insects sound terrifying ("we squeeze in the skin / empty your brain") against one of their most abrasive (relatively speaking) beats.
    • Its music video is no slouch, either. It starts innocently with two guys playing the DJ Max Clazziquai game on PSP, but then it all goes downhill from there. White horned demons terrorize the video, Horan suddenly becomes Medusa, and a blindfolded Alex removes his blindfold and has this face turn into a demon's. The final shot of the video is of Horan completely flanked by a crowd of white demons.

~Thomas Smith [4]

Welcome to Edit Banned. Yes, you have a PM suspension for misusing private messages, namely: rudeness to another user. "I'm right and you're wrong" does not excuse incivility. Okay?

~Kahran 042 [5]

Hello. Take a look at Please Trope Responsibly. You are responsible for your own health, including ensuring you're in the right state of mind before doing things on TV Tropes. Apparently, you don't take this seriously because this isn't even the first time you've behaved poorly on this site. Another nasty incident like this will make the suspension permanent. Understood?

~Toot [6]

Welcome to Edit Banned. It's good to hear you want to improve, but you're making enough mistakes that you will need some help (so others don't have to keep fixing those errors on the wiki). Here's an exercise: please go to the Get Help With English thread and post there. If you can submit trope or work examples three times without the helpers correcting your writing in their responses to you, you may have your editing privileges back.

~TNO Enjoyer [7]

If you don't know how to do something, you should ask before submitting anything. When you make a page, it's published. It's not supposed to contain test edits or guesses.

Your post there also shows that your grammar needs work.

~DM 1995 Italia [8]

Welcome to Edit Banned. You don't just get to wait out a ban. That's not how it works because you don't learn anything. You were banned from editing for instigating an Edit War on Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (the mostly-the-same Bare Midriffs Are Feminine entry), but yes, the grammar is an issue, too. Specifically, you called Mary Jane (a woman) "him" in both additions.

If you want to edit on the wiki again, here's an exercise: please post on Get Help With English Here. Write like you're submitting examples, and take note of the corrections the helpers respond with. If the helpers reply to you several times in a row saying there are no corrections to make, then you may come back here.

~voidgod [9]

Welcome. You were suspended for re-adding an entry (add, re-add) without an edit reason and without trying to discuss it beforehand. We want to avoid back-and-forth edits on the wiki, an Edit War. When you encounter an editing conflict like this and want to put something back, you should discuss it, either on the Discussion page, with the user who deleted your entry, or on Ask The Tropers.

And if you have questions about linking pages, Ask The Tropers is a good place to ask.

~peterlo209 [10]

That's somewhat vague, but okay then. Please be careful in your editing and posting. No spamming the forum, and listen to what others say to you. You may go.

~Spanks [11]

Okay. So you can show that you understand the rules, here's an example randomly picked (from Finger Gun). Please post this with correct indentation.

  • Get Smart. Max does this; naturally it's an actual gun disguised as a finger. Unfortunately it's only got one shot, which Max uses up with a warning shot to demonstrate that it really is a gun.
    • Later Max demonstrates he has one of these and the CHAOS agent says it's now unloaded. Max claims it's a two shot version — and proves it by firing the second shot.

~amongsus [12]

Right. You're part of the Edit War, and despite apparently recognizing it, continued warring with the other troper. So do you understand what an edit war is and how to prevent one when there's an editing conflict?

~youngstormlord [13]

You seemed to really be in a hurry to rid entries because Victoria is a problematic work. It is a problematic work, but getting rid of them purely for that reason and seemingly without discussion was the problem with your editing behavor. And that includes crosswicks linking to the novel. It really looked like you were impatient after a few years and went, "I'm tired of waiting! These wicks must go NOW!"

So. In the future, when you know there's a group effort to fix a problematic page, you should be responsive to people asking for your attention on the related cleanup thread, or we'll suspect you're ignoring them. Be forthcoming. If you reference a discussion thread, please link to it more specifically rather than make a vague mention of a cleanup thread that actually just goes to your own discussion post and not a cleanup thread. All right?

~The Dragon Demands [14]

Hello. You have a lot of notifiers about indentation, most recently here, where you

All of those are not allowed, and trivia is not allowed on the main work page. Do you have any questions about any of them?

~Lollin 07 [15]

Welcome. You know you're suspended for your Edit War, so to demonstrate you understand, can you give a few ways you can resolve an editing conflict before it becomes an edit war?

~𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤 alright. I promised I won't be touching that work again and I won't. I thought the cleanup was finally finished when the new page was out of the sandbox after three years there and that the only thing left was to remove wicks pointing to the old page. I was wrong. May I have my editing permissions back now?

WanderingBrowser Since: Jan, 2001
#32879: Mar 12th 2024 at 9:30:21 PM

~𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤 Thank you for hearing my case. I will admit, one of the things that has always left me scratching my heads about layered bullet points is that I always thought the intent was to place a specific point on each bullet, which is admittedly complicated if an entry was single-bulleted to begin with.

For example, if I wanted to add this Body Horror entry to the Juno Songs page, my inclination would be to split this into a single-bullet preamble and three double-bullet entries, because that's the... "intuitive" rationale, if that makes sense?

Or, look at this example from the Entertainingly Wrong Fan Works page:

  • All over the place in regards to WOOHP's conclusions concerning Ranma Saotome. They believe he's the leader of a terrorist organization known as the Nerima Wrecking Crew and has come to America for some nefarious purpose, as opposed to trying to escape the shenanigans in Nerima. After getting to third base with him, Clover is convinced that Kodachi is Ranma's psychotic ex-girlfriend who made him go down on her but told him he sucked so she didn't have to return the favor. In reality, Ranma just experimented in his girl form.

To me, this looks like two entries that, whilst referring to the same fanfic, should be presented as separate bullet-points, since they're referring to two separate examples of the trope - the first in WHOOP mistaking Ranma for a terrorist, the second in Clover believing Ranma's skill at lovemaking stems from a past abusive relationship.

So, you can understand why I can find the bullet-pointing system a little counter-intuitive sometimes? I am perfectly happy to correct the mistake when I make it, and I promise to try harder to follow the rules better. But there is no malice behind the mistakes, they're genuine mistakes.

As for indexing, I'm definitely happy to ask for help, I just tend to forget about the forums because I normally have very little reason to use them. And, as always, I'm perfectly happy to address a mistake I've made myself if somebody points it out to me. I'm actually not sure what the recent indexing mistakes I've made are, honestly, but I'll accept responsibility for making them.

And you're counting infractions since I've joined? Okay then. I did wonder about those cross-wicking notifications... I'm still legitimately curious what they were, though, because I'd forgotten they ever were.

I would like to clarify outright that my most recent TLP edits on Gratuitous Chinese (in the past few hours) were based on the assumption that I was given the right to adopt the proposed trope and edit the draft. Unless the implication is that we didn't go through the proper procedure for trope adoption, in which case... we should contact OP as well? I will admit to acting impulsively in the past days when I was involved in TLP.

Edit: And for other draft edits, it was mainly over formatting and grammar/spelling, and I did try to be more descriptive about what I edited afterward.

I was suspended recently (it was two days ago, so maybe it's too early to post here) because I posted two messages on a forum on this site where I talked pretty casually about death, both regarding for others and for myself. They were described as "Extreme positions taken just for the lulz", which they were, I'll admit.

I am sorry for posting it and for not controlling my mental thoughts and I promise I will never so again. That was on a forum page and not on an edit page, so all I'm asking for is to get my edit permission back.

~Greasy Chicken [1] [2]

You need to slow down. Slow down and look at Welcome to TV Tropes and all the related policy pages, because you have a lot of activity going on that needed repairs (or they were so messy that they had to be cut, not just Nightmare Fuel pages.

~Pushover Media Critic [3]

Yes and no. The two posts directly above yours said "drop the matter", even the related "matter" (questions) about the "matter" (your appeal, which you're okay with not pressing further). So you were expected to not post about it again.

Whatever you had said in your response to the admins (I can't see them), they didn't take it as a mere request for clarification but as further dispute. A signature is visible on all of the forums. Therefore, posting anywhere with that sig is posting it outside the politics thread. Is that clarification enough?

~Kaworuto [4]

Welcome to Edit Banned. You were given an editing suspension since something suspicious turned up related to your account. Do you have any alt accounts or do you know if anyone else in your household uses TV Tropes?

~Laggamer20xx [5]

You were suspended for multiple problems, among them not listening to the engineers rejecting your video edit requests. And you're still telling us to make video edits in your "appeal" here. Please stop doing that, and read What to Do If You Are Suspended.

~Kahran 042 [6]

Right, then. You may go. No more slip-ups.

~youngstormlord [7]

You may. Happy troping, and be careful.

~Wandering Browser [8]

You are partially correct. Bullets can be used for specific points, but there has to be more than one point. A single additional bullet is just a "continuation" of the parent bullet. The Body Horror example you have looks fine, if wordy. You may also split it into three points, as it does look like three examples in the one entry.

And yes, unless Clover is a member of WOOHP and that's related to their assumptions, that entry would be a good candidate to turn into two bullets. In fact, the entire Entertainingly Wrong entry on that page appears to use bullets as line breaks for a single entry, which isn't what bullet points are for. You cannot read

Later, because they don't know Ranma and Ranko are the same person, Sam takes Ranko's slip ups while talking about Akane to mean she's a lesbian who had a thing for Akane but got violently rejected.
by itself because it's carrying on from the earlier bullets. Which is wrong. Perhaps the solution here is to actually condense the entire thing into one bullet point that explains how everyone's assumptions are tied to each other. Sometimes splitting bullet points makes more sense than one entry, and sometimes keeping it as one makes more sense. Depends on how examples play out and how you write them.

As for counting infractions, there's a total tally of them, but if enough time has passed since someone noticed some error you're making, we'd assume you understood the rules about that and don't count it. So I'm saying at this point (those notifiers were from years back), we can assume you know what crosswicking is and how to do it, and we don't have to go over it.

~Spanks [9]

You're close. Remember that points on the same line should not reference each other. They're separate, so you should be able to read one example without needing to consult the other. And for this entry, it's good practice to state what happens (Max demonstrates he has one of these finger-guns), though I hadn't asked you to rephrase.

Since I think you understand the format of

  • Trope
    • Example
    • Example

and know not to hang additional points by themselves, your suspension is released.

~Thomas Smith [10]

All right, then. Please be civil in all postings and messages. You may go.

~Metal King [11]

Note you should never hang an additional bullet point off the parent bullet. If the next point is a continuation of an earlier, put it on the same line.

Since you've gotten a lot of notifiers, you can't go without demonstrating you understand indentation. So here's an exercise, from a randomly selected page. How might you fix the bullet points for these examples? Post them here.

  • Contrived Coincidence: When Kafuka and Chiri go to visit Nozomu's family home, they discover that all the other students ended up at the same place for completely separate individual reasons (Maria climbing onto a fruit truck, Meru boarding a train trying to get a cell phone signal, Abiru chasing an animal tail sticking out of a van).
    • A number of episodes/chapters also start with one of Nozomu's students (usually Nami) saying or doing something at home while Nozomu just happens to be by their window, causing him to launch into one of his rants.

  • Snap Back: One episode ends on a cliffhanger when Itoshiki gets so fed up he storms off downtown only to get ran over by a runaway streetcar. The episode ends with the entire class anxiously waiting for him in the hospital, and the "in operation" light finally turning off. The only indication the above actually happened is the fact that Chie is acting as substitute teacher in the next episode and Itoshiki has to storm into the classroom and resume his rantings.
    • It's entirely possible that this was related to the first half of that episode, where a brief mention was made of "being completely disconnected from the source material".

~amongsus [12]

I'll take your word for it. Remember, discuss and resolve before redoing any edits, and edit reasons do not count as discussion. You're released.

~voidgod [13]

When you suspect you may be repeating yourself, it'd be good to check the edit history to see whether you've already said it. And if you did, that means someone removed it for a reason. So be careful there, and remember the avenues for discussion to take before that repetition happens. Your suspension is released.

~TNO Enjoyer [14]

What I'm saying is that when you edit the wiki, you have to know what you're doing. You didn't know how to properly make a page, since you created Revolutionaries that was blank except "Bruh". That's not allowed.

Filip 04 [15]

Good to hear. Be careful about your grammar as well — I've noticed you've misspelled "waiting" multiple times, and phrasing's wonky. It would be good practice to run your entries through Get Help With English Here before submitting entries on the wiki, but I won't press the matter for now. You may go.

~Mr Darkman [16]

Here is what was said to you earlier. You've edit warred before and seemed to understand what an Edit War is last time, so the repeated deletions should not have happened without discussion. Edit reasons are not discussion. Attaching reasons does not change that there are repeated deletions on the page.

~Aqua Eclipse [17]

I think you underestimate how much people mind their drafts getting edited. If you ask permission beforehand, and the sponsor gives permission, that is great. Go ahead. But anything beyond very minor grammar and broken formatting fixes, you should comment what you want to see fixed, or ask the sponsor. Adding examples, adding headers, and sorting things is not minor and should just be commented.

Please be patient, and let the sponsors work on the proposals, okay? You can trust the sponsor and other commenters will help the draft look right before launch.

~Ruderuby [18]

Welcome to Edit Banned. Those extreme statements had us worried that the behavior could easily carry over to elsewhere on TV Tropes, so multiple suspensions were put in place. Please Trope Responsibly. Since you promised to watch what you say (and you'll be held to that), you may have your site privileges back.

~stuffedninja [19]

Both look great. I trust you'll be able to get indentation right, always, from now on. You are released.

~𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤 Yeah, that's been my recurring problem; I try to only insert additional bullet points where it seems to make sense to me that they are distinct from the previous bullet point as opposed to continuing the example, but sometimes I get it wrong. It is at least partially a matter of personal judgment, as you note, and sadly I've gotten it wrong sometimes. But yes, I understand now that in general a sub-bullet should only be added if either the entire example can be broken into two or more bullets, or if there are at least two separate examples that don't directly continue on from the original bulleted entry.

May I please have my editing permission back now?

As I said, I do admit to being a bit impulsive at times. I'll try to rein myself in for any future edits, and try to keep any changes to comment suggestions or post-launch edits.

Not that I know of. I've been using this same account since 2017. I did try to make a new account when I logged in recently and found out I was suspended, but I didn't actually create the account, I only got an email sent to confirm it which I didn't click on. Luckily I read the rules which said creating multiple accounts is a bannable offense before I made that mistake. I assure you I have no accounts besides this one, nor does anyone in my household have an account.

Ok but what "is" the decision? I got the answer as to why the suspension happened in the first place, but what is the decision of on whether or not it will be lifted?

Yes and no. The two posts directly above yours said "drop the matter", even the related "matter" (questions) about the "matter" (your appeal, which you're okay with not pressing further). So you were expected to not post about it again.

I wasn't really trying to question my appeal in that thread, I was just sharing that I had a negative experience with the Contact form. The anonymous Admin I was talking to was extremely rude, threatening my account in their very first response and calling me a "crazy conspiracy theorist" with a "bizarre agenda". I do understand it being off-topic.

Whatever you had said in your response to the admins (I can't see them), they didn't take it as a mere request for clarification but as further dispute.

Since you can't see it, I'm gonna waive my privacy and copy-paste the email conversation, in full (just the text, not with emails, obviously):

     Contact Form Conversation

Staff: I hope this email is being sarcastic for your accounts sake.

  • Contact Form: Mods unfairly and in an abuse of power deleted my signature calling Republicans terrorists, when the Republican National Convention openly said "we are all domestic terrorists". I'm not saying anything about them that they won't say about themselves.

—-

Staff: It looks like your forum signature was previously deleted months ago, if you re-add it again you will be permanently banned from the forums.

—-

Me: I thought it was a glitch the first time, and I'm not kidding about CPAC saying that about themselves.

—-

Staff: 30 seconds of googling:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/cpac-banner-domestic-terrorists/

  • "We Are All Domestic Terrorists" was also the title of a panel discussion, it should be noted. Present on that panel was Julie Pickren, a Texas State Board of Education candidate who claimed the title was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, the Houston Chronicle reported. "Nobody in this room is a domestic terrorist," she reportedly told the crowd of attendees.โ€

TV Tropes is a place to discuss TV, not politics. Please keep your political opinions/questions to yourself until the US politics thread opens back up. I recommend finding another website to discuss them as it may not be anytime soon.

—-

Me: I'm aware they claimed it was tongue-in-cheek, but that was a lie to cover up the dogwhistle of encouraging their voter base to engage in domestic terrorism.

But fine, so I can re-add my signature once the US politics thread opens back up?

—-

Staff: If youโ€™re aware then you know putting that as your signature is in bad-faith and you know exactly why you canโ€™t have it. You sound like a crazy conspiracy theorist and if you keep pushing your bizarre agenda you will be banned from TV Tropes, is that clear?

—-

Me: What are you talking about? I'm not a crazy conspiracy theorist, that was a blatantly obvious dogwhistle. That was less subtle than Republicans saying black people are "welfare queens", which is like the classic example of political dogwhistles. They literally said "we are all domestic terrorists", word-for-word, and then went "nevermind that, we're just kidding". Statements like that have an impact, 90% of USA domestic terrorism is right-wing. Putting that as my signature is not bad faith, and this isn't a bizarre agenda, that accusation is baffling to me. The Republican Party has gone off the deep end ever since Trump lost, with the insurrection, book-banning, and pushing legislation to criminalize trans people.

And you just said that I should "keep your political opinions/questions to yourself until the US politics thread opens back up." I don't think it's unreasonable for me to interpret that as "I can re-add my signature once the US politics thread opens back up". I didn't even just assume that and then do it without permission, I asked for permission on whether it's okay, all you had to do was say 'yes' or 'no', not accuse me pushing a "bizarre agenda" that is completely reasonable and about something incredibly minor (all this is about is a profile signature).

I hope that you wouldn't ban me from T Vtropes just because we're having a calm discussion over email, not even on the T Vtropes website. I'm not being rude or breaking T Vtropes' rules. I'm not even doing anything, I'm just asking for permission. If not the statement, can I just put the quote itself? Or what about a link to that image showing the quote? If not, just say so and I won't.

—-

Staff: You're being told by an admin to stop your unacceptable behavior. If you push this one more time we will ban you, end of discussion.

—-

Me: Okay, fine. There's no need to get hostile, I'm not pushing anything, I was just asking.

I admit that I got heated in my second-to-last email, and I do apologize for that, but I got mad because my sanity was insulted. I tried to be clear even in the email chain that I wasn't trying to push the appeal further, I was just asking clarifying questions.

And to reiterate a point I was making in the post that got thumped for being off-topic, this email conversation was a month ago. I'm over it. I'm fine not having that signature back. I'm not pushing the appeal any more, no need to ban me on those terms.

A signature is visible on all of the forums. Therefore, posting anywhere with that sig is posting it outside the politics thread. Is that clarification enough?

Yes, that is clear.
