Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

The Corinthian quote sounds good to me. Are all three ("the good doctor", Nimrod and the Corinthian) C Ms or just the Corinthian?

The Lord of the Rings Online has been around since 2007, so it Sauron isn't the only potential CM from that game. Not including him, there are six more candidates I'm considering to propose. Most of which are Original Characters. As far as I'm aware there's still a limit of three active E Ps. But even if I got this wrong I don't want to flood this thread with MY POST. So I'm just going to one more EP before heading to bed and leave the rest for later. If someone wants to collaborate feel free to send my a message.smile

The Work

Please see my first post for a short summary of the game and the books it's based on.

The Candidate

Burudagath the Bloodletter (image) a human servant of Sauron in charge of Faltor-shik, the Fane of Screaming in the Waste between the Kingdom of Gondor and Mordor, Sauron's realm. In the grand scheme of things he's a rather unimportant character, only appearing in a single questline and not even having a unique character model

His Deeds

- Faltor-shik was once known as Ondoher's Folly, where the Gondorian King Ondoher was slain together with his two sons Artamir and Faramir (the Faramir from the books was named after him). While Ondoher and Artamir found peace in death, Faramir remained behind as restless spirit. For a long time nothing disturbed Faramir but then Burudagath showed up with Ondoher's long lost banner. Mocking the long death king he unfurled the banner and began to sacrifices slaves underneath it.

- Over time Faltor-shik became a place of misery and death. Under Burudagath countless humans would be brought there to be tortured before getting sacrificed on the altar in the middle of the camp. Their remains would often be defiled by him and his orcs or simply left to rot. Many of the unfortunate victims where captured Gondorians but he would also send his orcs back to Mordor to collect old and weak slaves who were told that they would be released.

- When the player character arrives in the area the ghost of Faramir is awakened from his lethargy by a Gondorian scholar who shares his brother's name. With the help of the player character Faramir plans to put an end to Burudagath and his cruelty: A nearby ruin is inhabitated by the ghosts of Wainrider. In live these men were mortal enemies of Gondor and King Ondoher. So the player pays the ghosts a visit and claims that Faltor-shik is occupied by Gondorians instead of Sauron's forces.

- For the ruse to work, however, the player also has to slay all the orcs in Faltor-shik. Luckily the player character is a vertiable One-Man Army, so this isn't much of a problem. At least not until Burudagath himself shows up. He personally kills the remaining orcs for failing to stop the player character, mocks Faramir's ghost ("When I took Ondoher's banner, I meant to scorn him in death. How fortunate I was that his fool of a son was cursed to witness it all!") before he temporarily banishes him and then knocks out the player character with a single spell. Not bad for a lowly minion.

- When the player character wakes up he's tied to the altar. Burudagath reveals that he's aware of the larg army under Gondor's banner that is marching towards the Black Gate of Mordor to challenge Sauron. And while he has been given orders to let them pass, he expect Sauron's forces to crush them and is looking forward to claim the survivors for himself. ("But when they lie beaten and broken before the Black Gate.. My work shall begin anew, and I shall end them here one by one.")

- Just when he's about the kill the player character the ghosts of the Wainrider finally show up. Seeing Burudagath standing under the banner of King Ondoher with no orcs around their leader stabs the "Gondorian" with his spear, seriously wounding him. The ghosts then leave and it seems like Burudagath survived the attack. But he then starts to panic, claiming to see the victims of the all the people he has murdered. He yells at them (at least I think he does, there are no voices) to stay away before he drops death. A fitting end for such a vile man.

Mitigating Factors/Freudian Excuses

Hahahahaha... No!

Alright, alright... When he's about to sacrifice the player character he tells him: "Die now, and consider this my truest mercy!" Now as I said, he has no voice actor so it's a bit hard to tell if this was sincer or not. But considering that he's a sadistic torturer, who's happy to killer the player character because it will put him into Sauron's good grace I don't believe his line is meant to be read as "Out of respect I'm granting you a quick and mercifuly death." and more akin to him saying "Consider yourself lucky that I'm making it quick this time. The others won't be that fortunate!" Especially since he does it right after reavling to the player that he's going to torture and murder whatever remains of Gondor's army after Sauron is done with them.

Heinous Standard

None of the things he does are unique. We have several villains who kill prisoners, torture prisoners or executed their own minions for failing them. What makes this guy stand out is his impressive body count. The place around the alter is basically littered with bones of the people he killed. All things considered he's a very minor villain who racks up an impressive body count.

My Verdict

I'm not here to propose but to ask this: why is the movie version of Jack Horner from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish not a Complete Monster?

In the movie, he shows zero concern or care for anyone, is happy to kill for his goals, endangers and even slaughters his henchman without remorse, and has the single-minded goal of wanting to take over everything. He also lacks a Freudian Excuse and shows contempt for his nurturing upbringing, implying he doesn't hold any love for his family.

How does the movie Jack Horner not fit the category of the Complete Monster? Does a Complete Monster have to be evil in every way to qualify? Does his Laughably Evil tendencies make him not a monster? And how does a comparable character, like the DCAU Joker, fit into the category when Jack Horner doesn't?

Does sarumon count too? I heard he's one from online that's been suggested before.

[up][up]only the cornithian counts. The other two kind of have issues that the entire event is a convention of serial killers and they all are awful pricks who blend together. Only the main speaker and sort of leader cornithian stands out.

[tup] to the other Lord of the rings guy (not gonna try to spell that)

[up][up] Jack was up for awhile, but between his crimes being a bit too generic and being Played for Laughs too much (a CM can be funny but only if they're not too much of a joke) he was deemed a cut. His novelization version was put up instead do to being less comedic and having a more explicitly described sinister end goal.

I was actually against cutting Jack, though it was a weak keep.

I have no problem with Sauron counting given the sheer scale but I'm gonna need a more specific number on the sacrificial body count here for Burudagath. I did Lheu Brenin back in the day and he leads his entire hundreds strong clan to their doom in a forced march beneath the mountains all so he can personally slaughter all the women and children beneath Helm's Deep. He sets the standard for human villains so I want a better estimate of victims before I vote yes to Burudagath.

@miraculous: I’m planing to make an EP for Saruman, too. The game adds a ton of new heinous actions to his rap sheet. And unless there are some mitigating factors I haven’t noticed (Does he has any in the books?) I think he counts. Sure his story isn’t over yet because in the game he’s still stuck in Orthanc but the Scouring of the Shire isn’t happing any time soon. The next big Add-On is going to be Umbar and after that is probably either Harad or Rhun.

@Lore Deluxe Fair enough. Here's a picture of the altar. And this is a nearby landmark where the bones of even more victims are gathered. Also keep in mind that he doesn't just kill them but has them tortured beforehand. And the player actually sees (and has to recuse) a few prisoner in Faltor-shik who are getting whipped by orcs. So the torture is also on-screen.

Yes to Burudagath. That seems to be a truly exemplary level of slaughter.

To round out Blueberry, I present the villain of volumes 10 ("General Golden Mane") and 22 ("End of the Trail")—General Allister.

    What has General Allister done?
  • The eponymous "General Golden Mane," Allister is a combination of "genocidal lunatic" and "incompetent General Failure." Allister debuts forcing the noble Blueberry into his command after the latter has made peace with the Sioux. Allister promptly rips up the treaty and, all for the sake of his own glory and pride, tries to spearhead a genocidal attack on the Native population he hopes will wipe them all out. Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho—Allister isn't discriminating, aiming to exterminate thousands of people.
  • Some of these slaughters are prevented; others aren't. In one occasion, Allister attempts to wipe out a settlement that's remarked to be almost entirely women, children and the elderly. In another, Blueberry witnesses the aftermath of a massacre that has almost as many dead soldiers on the ground as Natives thanks to Allister's incompetent command.
  • Allister's idiocy extends into outright malice when Blueberry saves Allister from certain death from drowning. Allister repays Blueberry saving his life by commanding Blueberry to command a regiment mostly consisting of the wounded...then promptly abandoning them all to die to save his own ass. Blueberry is the only survivor. Allister later writes off another regiment he deems to be useless to him, while dragging more of his men to his death with suicidal battle strategies.
  • A Karma Houdini in volume 10, Allister returns in issue 22 as the mastermind behind an assassination plot targeting the President (in this case, Ulysses Grant), having a minion of his killed before he can talk. When he has Blueberry at his mercy, Allister plans to bomb a train containing Grant and dozens of other passengers in the President's retinue, frame the assassination on Blueberry, then use the resultant chaos to make himself President Evil. When Blueberry aptly points out the only thing this will do is tear the entire country apart in a civil war, Allister ignores him and goes ahead with his plot.
  • Blueberry foils the train bombing and saves President Grant. Arresting Allister, the disgraced General still tries one last time to gun Grant down himself—which results in Blueberry shooting him dead like the mad dog he is.
    Heinous standard?
  • Allister is essentially Bascom on steroids. Of the well-occupied "racist warmonger" niche, Allister is one of the absolute worst with his intended genocide, especially when he sneaks in another appearance in volume 22 where he goes from a malicious General Failure to would-be Presidential assassin.
    Redeeming qualities?
  • Nothing. He seems to have something of a Heel Realization and comes to respect Blueberry at the end of volume 10...before volume 22 reveals Allister nursed a grudge over Blueberry "humiliating" him for years and makes Blueberry the intended scapegoat for his assassination plot out of nothing but his slighted pride.

Easy yes to Allister.

So, the issue for Jack is he kind of lacks in heinousness, in addition to the whole thing being pretty much played for a joke. He doesn't have outright destructive/genocidal goals, and most of his violence is just limited to henchmen and the heroes without much by way of collateral damage.
