Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Have another Captain Victory potential, from first half of the series.

Who is Lightning Lady? What has she done?

Hive Queen of Insectons colony alongside Regent. Duo break galactic quarantine Rangers goverment had placed their Warlord species under and conquered unspecifed number of worlds. They invade planet Tallant 4, striping it of life and turning it into their hive, breeding more Insactoid for conquests. Rangers attack and duo escapes while most of their fleet is destroyed and what left of Tallant blown up. Their search leads them to Earth, where Regent is captured and killed shorthly after getting there, leaving lady in full charge of hive.

Lightning Lady uses her technology to mind control planets inhabitants, in this case town’s population and use them to reduce their planet to barren husk and as hostages to keep Rangers at bay. Victory and team of Rangers team up with Earth lawmen to infiltrate hive, save hostages and blow hive up.

Rangers set a berrier around hive, only for insactons to use couple of human as sacrifices and have them fried by barrier. Lighthing Lady is workin on new type of Insecton super soldier, planing to send his on Rangers. We also learn nasty by about Insactons, they fill inhabitants of planets they claims worth fluids which make their bodies fat and eat them. Rangers find bunch of them while infiltrating hive (traumatising human sherrif).

Ligthing Lady sends her super soldier to kill rangers. It fails, only for lady to use bunch of small children as hostages, rangers making clear not even they are Safe from becoming food. Victory captures her and tries to persuade her to make peace, only for her to try to seduce him and kill him with the ligthing. She is however beaten by telephatic member of Rangers, who uses his powers to send her to another dimension.

Mitigating factors?

Nothing for reddeming qualities. She shows no emotions to Regent’s death and no care for her Insectons beyond supremacy and making army for conquest.

For agency, Insectoids are nasty and as we learn there are more Queen’s being made in the hive. However there is nothing that indicates they lack agency, with Lady simply rebuking Victory’s peace offering with declaration that Insectons only care about power.

Ultimately she willingly rebukes any attempts at peace for no reason other than being egoistical Social Darwinst.

Heinousness?

Not-Darkseid is nasty, however Ligthing Lady is easily second behind him and worst Insecton we see. She invaded number of planets turning their inhabitants into a food and when reduced to just one ship plans to mind control Earth’s population in order to conquer their planet and turn them into a food. Add nasty bit of threathing children.

New queen and her Regent only try to continue what she started on Earth, before being killed of with only few panels of screen time and no personal nastines.

Conclusion?

I will understand bit with there being multiple Queen’s gives some pause, but there being nothing imliying that they can’t choose whether to be evil or not and her being easily worth Insecton we see makes me feel yes.

Writeup for Bishop Hatto:

  • God's Judgment on a Bishop, by Robert Southey: Bishop Hatto is a greedy bishop who has saved up plenty of grain but, when a famine comes, doesn't want to share it with the starving people. Annoyed by their pleas for help, he lures them to his barn, claiming they would get food there, and instead burns the barn down with the crowd of people inside it. He gleefully compares his victims to rats who deserved to be killed, and doesn't repent even as a swarm of actual rats attacks and eats him alive.

So, have couple of EP's from some game, after watching walkthroughs of it

What's the Work?

RUINER is a hardcore, top-down twin-stick shooter made by the Polish indie studio Reikon Games and published by Devolver Digital, released on September 26 2017.

The year is 2091. In the city of Rengkok, a dirty, neon-lit Cyberpunk dystopia, where cybernetically-enhanced crime runs rampant, HEAVEN controls and rules over everything and opresses people left and right. We follow a nameless protagonist, as he is rescued by a hacker, who is called simply HER, after which they start their quest to hunt down the corrupt members of HEAVEN organization and help out everyone along the way.

Full walkthrough of the game can be watched here:

My first candidate is TrafficKing

Who is TrafficKing?

A head of the Hanza Compound, who oversees and assists HEAVEN by making everything for them, including trasporting a tech and thousands of people (who are used as subjects of experiments) for the horrific Virtuality program, where innocent people are used as hosts for virtual machines, to be used as living batteries for HEAVEN tech or to be used by clients for whatever they wish (which, according to database, often results in torture and deaths of hosts).

Joining Sick Sisters (the ones, who control Virtuality) in their attempt to kill The Boss and take over HEAVEN organization, hiring some hacker, Wizard, to hack The Boss' brother (the protagonist of the game) to send him to kill The Boss (which resulted in a lot of Boss' minions getting killed), when HER managed to save the protagonist and tracked down TrafficKing in his Hanza Compound, TrafficKing furiosly sended many of his own men and mercenaries to kill them (with some of his workers being killed by MOTHER machine, something that he doesn't seem to care about), not caring about their deaths, as he then fought the protagonist himself, before being beaten and enslaved by HER.

As HER and the protagonist force him to open them the way to the Sick Sisters' base, Hell, with TrafficKing trying to make the protagonist doubt HER and her intentions, he is forced to go through extremely painful burning to open the way for the protagonist, only to survive and turn into a giant cyborg by Sick Sisters and fighting the protagonist to have his revenge for being tortured by them. Only for him to fail again and getting finally killed.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nothing at all. Even his attempt at talking geniunly to the protagonist, when he was enslaved by HER, is kinda undercut by it being simply his attempt to convince protagonist to defy HER and he later gleefully tried to kill protagonist as well. He holds no true loyalty to anyone else, being quickly willing to betray them, as soon as his life is threatened.

Heinousness?

Him being a big part in helping HEAVEN with Virtuality program in what's pushing him for me, since he is the one, who delivers people (who are often desperate for work, which is why they agree to be the hosts) to be used as hosts, which resulted in them being tortured and often reduced to barely alive husks, who attack everyone they see.

Him being a slimy coward, who is fully willing to betray everyone and who is coldly throws his own men's lives away does adds more repulsivness to him.

Conclusion?

What do you think?

Yes to Ligthing Lady and Traffic King.

So I am going to try to EP Tchar.

So Star Trek the Animated Series is a 1973 animated sequel series to the original Star Trek show. Despite being animated Sat morning cartoon series from the early 1970s, made by Flimation, it tries to recreate the tone of the original series, going from goofy to more serious depending on the episode. Today I will be covering the season finale of the first season, The Jihad.

Who is Tchar? What has he done?

Tchar is the hereditary prince of the Skorr, a race of bird aliens who were once fearsome warriors, but who became pacifists thanks to a religious leader, Alar. After Alar died, the Skorr took his brain patterns and put them in an artifact called the Soul of Alar, which became a religious icon for the Skorr. Tchar thinks pacifism has made his people weak and secretly steals the Soul of Alar. Only a few people in the Skorr government know of this theft, if it became public knowledge, the Skorr would become enraged and declare war on the rest of the galaxy. The Skorr can breed 200 billion warriors within 2 years, so even if they couldn't win a war with the rest of the galaxy, they could do some damage. Tchar hides the Soul of Alar on a mad planet, a planet with a dangerous climate that always changes.

Powerful aliens called the Vedala discover that the Soul of Alar is on the mad planet and organize 3 rescue parties to recover it. Tchar offers to join all these parties as a representative of the Skorr and then sabotages each party, seemingly having them killed. The Vedala organize a fourth rescue party, including Kirk, Spock, and Tchar, Lara, a human woman who has become a hunter and warrior, Sord, a powerful reptilian and Em/3/Green, a cowardly insect alien who is an expert lock-pick and thief. The party sets out to the mad planet. Tchar seems to help the party, even saves Em's life, until the party makes it to the building where the Soul of Alar is kept. The party is attacked by robots and Tchar is separated from the group.

The rest of the party entered the building and find the Soul of Alar, too high up to reach. Kirk and the party climb to retrieve it, but Tchar attacks, revealing his true colors. Tchar reveals that he thinks pacifism has made his people weak and he wants to revive their warrior spirit. When Spock notes that most of the Skorr would be killed in such a war, Tchar states he doesn't care, that his people would be better off dying in combat than living as weak pacifists. Tchar claims the party has earned his respect and he turns off the gravity in the building, so they can fight him as a Skorr would and die in grace. When Em suggests Kirk shoot him with his phaser, Kirk notes that Tchar controls the phaser bank in the building and could kill them all if they don't fight on his terms. Spock and Kirk overpower Tchar and return to the Vedala. Vedala claims Tchar will be healed of his madness, but for the good of the Skorr, Kirk and the party will have their memories of this adventure removed.

Is he heinous by the standard of the work?

So I talked about Star Trek before, in this series in particular, a cloud alien devours planets until Spock convinces it there are living people on the planets it consumes and it leaves, but a lot of episodes have lower stakes or just plain silly, like the Enterprise computer turning against the crew in order to commit practical jokes

But I think in terms of the general Star Trek standard, trying to start a religious war involving 200 billion warriors as canon fodder is pretty up there.

Any Freudian Excuse or other redeeming qualities?

So Tchar claims to have a sense of honor and allows Kirk a fair chance to defeat him in combat when he could have just killed him. But is Tchar honorable or merely an overconfident Blood Knight?

A lot of Tchar's other actions were not honorable, he lied to his people, pretends to be Kirk's ally, is fine with most of his people dying in a religious war, and had the last 3 rescue parties killed.

The Vedala claims that Tchar will be cured of his madness, but Tchar doesn't seem insane, a fanatic sure, but he doesn't seem mentally ill, I wonder if the Vedala are just going to brainwash him so he is no longer evil and no one will ask questions.

Final Verdict?

He may count if you think those qualities I mentioned are not redeeming.

Here we go. Haplif I'll post tommorrow when it's three days. As were still a day early.

  • Diagnosis: Murder:

    • "X marks the Murder": Michael Dern is a misogynistic Serial Killer who, due to his own self pitying, has made it his mission in life to hunt down and kill women. Using his job as a gas station attendant, Michael charms women into letting him near them before murdering them. Gaining an obsession with police consultant Dr. Mark Sloan, Michael targets his friend Dr. Andrea and gleefully reveals how he plans to kill her. Michael ultimately reveals he aims to increase his victim count by two or three a day just to bask in the attention and is happy to mock Sloan with how much his victims suffered, just to mess with him.
    • "Murder x4": Ernst Rogin is the head of the Montana Mutual insurance company, which acts as a front for his assassination business. Rogin forces terminally ill patients into being his pet assassins or else their insurance won't be paid to their families, and is perfectly happy running the lives of desperate people who just want to provide for their families. Rogin's assassins end up cutting a path of destruction across the city from a drive by shooting that kills a woman, a bludgeoned real estate agent and the shooting of a travel sales agent that leads to an entire room taken hostage and threatened. When Rogin is confronted by Dr. Mark Sloan and his son Steve to try and stop his latest killer from taking out their victim, Rogin shrugs and holds it over their heads in an attempt to weasel out of consequences stating that her death "won't be on my conscience. I don't have one"
    • The Silent partner: Freddy Meeks is a Serial Killer known as "The Silent Partner" who specialises in copying the killings of other killers. A true crime author and police consultant, Meeks becomes so fascinated by murder that he begins to murder others. Meeks uses his position to learn the modus operandis of various wanted Serial Killers and then copies their murders so that the killing is assumed to be one of their spree. Operating for years, Meeks' operation is only discovered by Dr. Mark Sloan finding discrepancies in his cases, and as a, result Meeks tries to off him. Framing his old friend Lou as the killer, Meeks frames his death as a suicide in a way to escape punishment. Ultimately, when confronted, Meeks admits that he kills for the sheer thrill of it.

  • The Hardy Boys: Dr. Douglas Carrini is an amoral psychologist obsessed with finding the perfect childhood for kids after his own Parental Abandonment. For over a decade, Carrini has been kidnapping children from flawed but loving parents and sending them to his personal bunker "Happyland" to create the perfect childhood. Carrini has them constantly drugged into submission, which leaves the kids in an eternal state of mindlessness. The horrible effects have led to one child even dying. After one of his patients escapes, Carrini orders the death of anyone who could discover the truth of his operation, leading to the stabbing of the grandfather of one of his victims and the death via venomous rattlesnakes of another person looking into the truth. Capturing Frank Hardy for his collection, Carrini tries to gaslight him into dropping the investigation into his crimes, when that fails, is fine simply murdering the kids and starting anew. Ultimately, despite his claims that he's helping children, Carrini really only cares about forcing his own twisted beliefs on others and shocks even Frank Hardy in how callously he's willing to kill even the kids he says he wants to help.

Second candidate from RUINER, which is a duo

Who are the Sick Sisters?

Sick Sisters are the conjoined twins connected at the brain, who became the first people, that were connected to Virtuality and thus they are the ones, who are oversee it, directly using thousands of people, that were delivered to them by TrafficKing, as living batteries to her Angels (Big Weapons, used for security in HEAVEN's facilities) or as basically "playthings" to clients, who often tortured and killed them.

Deciding to betray The Boss and take over HEAVEN, Sick Sisters get TrafficKing to join them after which they got a hacker Wizard to brainwash the protagonist to kill The Boss. When that failed and the protagonist was saved by HER, Sick Sisters returned to their work, also threatening and murdering TrafficKing's at Hanza Compound for seemengly no reason, while they were under the desguise of the machine MOTHER.

Defeat by the protagonist there, Sick Sisters returned to their base, Hell. When the protagonist forced TrafficKing to open them a way to Hell, Sick Sisters tried to kill TrafficKing for betraying them (not caring that TrafficKing was tortured to force him to do it) and after fighting the protagonist, they mocked him and then picked up the nearly dead TrafficKing afterwards and turned him into a giant cyborg to have him kill the protagonist, dismissing his death when he failed.

Confronting the protagonist at the second-to-last level, Sick Sisters gleefully use the drained hosts of people to attack him, and when the Cruel Sister died, the supposedly Merciful Sister started to gleefully laugh, since that means that all the power now belongs to her (before that Merciful Sister was putting a facade of being nicer one, like saying that they should respect TrafficKing's demise, before she was cut off by the Cruel Sister) and gleefully ordered the drained hosts to attack the protagonist and "show him the true pain", before she was killed as well.

Mitigating Qualities?

They don't show much care for each other, which is especially evident by Merciful Sister openly laughing about Cruel Sister's death and Cruel Sister being much more obviosly psychotic and sadistic. While Merciful Sister does appear to be nicer t first (asking "didn't we get too far with this?" and suggesting to respect TrafficKing's death), the moment Cruel Sister was killed, she openly laughs and becomes sadistic, just like Cruel Sister, which is kinda used by the tone to suggest that her previous interactions were the facade she used in front of the Cruel Sister, with whom she was forced to share the power of the facility.

Heinousness?

They oversee the Virtuality project, as in they are the ones, who actually have thousands of people drained and used as living batteries or "playthings", which reduces people to the state of barely alive feral husks. Her randomnly killing people, who works for her and openly enjoying to torture people for fun made her stand out to me.

Conclusion?

What do you think?
