Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

[tup] To Nennog

Here is another candidate I have right now.

What's The Work?

The Catto Boi series is a collection of horror games developed by Mango-Ki. The games feature Catto Boi, a humanoid cat character who is typically portrayed in non-horror video games. In these games, Catto Boi is on a mission to find various items for his friends, such as biscuits, gems, and even mystical frozen tuna that is centuries old. However, throughout the game, he is relentlessly pursued and tormented by a malevolent digital entity that can warp reality. This entity makes Catto Boi's life a living nightmare, adding a horror element to the game.

Who is The Entity? What Has It Done?
The Entity is the previously-mentioned reality-warping entity that haunts the game and is the main antagonist of the series.

He's a member of a race of self-aware digital beings known as "Entities" who possess the ability to warp the digital realm, however, although most Entities are actually benevolent, The Entity uses his reality-warping powers to enter Phase Worlds (that's the name that the worlds within videogames have btw) and torment their inhabitants for sadistic pleasure by killing them all repeatedly before eventually destroying their entire world when he gets bored of them, with its most recent target being Catto Boi's world, which for some reason seems to be much harder to destroy for him than usual. Let me list all of the acts it has done right now since it will be very long trust me on this.

  • Has tormented and destroyed multiple Phase Worlds in the past for nothing but sadistic pleasure since long before the series even started. And although this was initially off-screen villainy, he was later shown tormenting other worlds aside from Catto's in the canon spin-off game Doggo Boye's Fantastic Adventure.
  • Invaded Catto Boi's world and used his reality-warping powers to torment him by murdering him and all of his friends over and over in variable and painful ways, all the while sadistically taunting him about it and making him aware of all of it during all of the series.
  • Possessed Big Boi, who's Catto Boi's best friend, and used his body as a vessel to attack Catto Boi on multiple occasions.
  • Torments the player, threatens to murder them repeatedly, and constantly tries to intimidate them with screamers and threats to avoid them from doing anything to him.
  • He knows that what he does is horrible and he openly enjoys it, having expressed his pleasure for all the torment he makes Catto and the player go through multiple times, and outright admitting that he loves crushing the hopes and dreams of happy worlds such as Catto's.
  • When he realized Minori, who's another Entity, posed a threat to his power, he had a small breakdown where he screamed at the player to not listen to her, then he proceeded to capture her and likely attempted to torture her so she could tell him how did she manage to reach the player.
  • Trapped Catto Boi inside an underground cave and filled it with dozens of corpses to scare him before killing him by crushing him with a giant boulder.
  • When he got bored of tormenting Catto, he decided to switch to tormenting the player instead, before then proceeding to chase after Catto to try to kill him permanently.
  • When Catto Boi and the player manage to evade him, he tries to use psychological tactics to trick the player into giving themself up to him by possessing Big Boi's body again, he then has a furious breakdown when this fails.
  • When Catto discovers the fact that he's been tormenting countless other Phase Worlds before his, he reveals to him that he has grown bored of trying to take over his world and decides to straight-up destroy all of Catto Boi's universe out of spite, and he would've succeeded if Minori and Catto hadn't stopped him.
  • In the bad ending on The Quest For The Legendary Tuna, he managed to keep Catto Boi trapped inside the deleted remains of his Phase World for all of eternity even after getting banished, which caused Catto to turn into a more demonic version of himself and violently lash out at the player.
  • After getting banished from Catto Boi's world, he decided to instead switch to tormenting the world of Doggo Boye's Fantastic Adventure.
  • Killed Doggo Boye permanently by impaling him on spikes with sadistic glee.
  • After being supposedly banished for good, he marks his return by triggering an anti-piracy screen and an error message, all the while threatening the player with what it plans to do to Catto.
  • He personally went and killed all the citizens at Catto Village and had their bodies impaled on the streets.
  • He chased after Catto and when he managed to catch him, he proceeded to leave him horribly mutilated, but still alive.
  • When he realized that he could never kill Catto for good, he decides to leave him trapped in a "state of limbo", all the while sadistically taunting the player about it.
  • When Minori infiltrated his base, he tricked her into going to the deepest part of his base to capture her and leave her trapped in a state of limbo too.
  • When another Entity managed to free Catto Boi and attempted to help him, he proceeded to kill them remorselessly.
  • When he realized that Minori was attempting to reassemble the Legendary Fragments, he attempted to fight and kill Catto Boi one last time.
  • In the bad ending of The Legendary Fragments, he taunts Catto and Minori for being unable to reassemble the Fragments and proceeds to erase his world from existence for good, all the while taunting the player for their failure, right before logging them out of their computer.
  • Ultimately at the end of the day, his only motivation for his actions was his endless sadism and nothing else.

Mitigating Factors?

Absolutely none. His moral agency is perfectly fine given the fact Entities are mostly benevolent beings who use their powers to help out Phase Worlds, yet he chose to do evil instead this proves he possesses a clear moral agency throughout the entire series. He cares for nobody but himself has no comedic moments whatsoever (with the only exception being in the Catto Boi: Trouble In Love Land game, which is not even canon anyway), and does everything he does for no good reason but sadism.

Heinous Standard?

He murdered dozens of people and even proudly showcased their impaled corpses to Catto, took over and tortured multiple universes out of sadism, tried to destroy Catto's entire universe (and succeeded in the bad ending of The Legendary Fragments) out of spite twice, and even corrupted Catto into becoming a villain and trapped him in a fate worse than death in the bad ending of The Quest For The Legendary Tuna even after being defeated. I am pretty sure it's safe to say he easily passes the baseline at least.

Final Verdict

As always it's your choice.

And for those cannibals from Maddigan's Quest...from episode 5, "Greentown."

What have Missy and Brewer done?
  • Respectively the chef and the butler of a small community named Greentown—a small community which only seems to consist of themselves and two Brawn Hilda-type women who welcome the circus troupe to Greentown while stuffing themselves with food. Greentown is known for its delicacies and the amazing hospitality of its residents. So hospitable they never want to leave again.
  • Missy and Brewer run Greentown like a giant spider web. Folks come from all over the country to partake in the food, only to end up drugged. The "delicacies" are in fact worms and dirt; Missy and Brewer poison the minds of their guests before knocking them out and, ultimately, butchering them. ("Protein. The most precious commodity there is. You'll get a taste for it in time. Green. Sufficient. Self-sufficient. That's our way. Nothing is wasted.")
  • Only one member of the troupe is immune to the mind-altering drugs, a boy named Boomer who—like the cannibals—has no imagination and thus is unable to hallucinate. The cannibals gleefully take him aboard (whether he wants to or not) and it becomes sickeningly clear that not only do they intend on eating the whole troupe (baby Jewel included) but they've already eaten dozens of people. When Boomer tries to escape, he finds a room filled with the personal belongings of many, many, many previous people that Missy and Brewer have kept as trophies...a whole bookshelf stacked with them, in fact. Boomer even finds the medallions of previous time-travelers who came from the Bad Future to try and avert the Nennog's rule, only to meet their ends in Greentown.
  • The worst detail: many of those trophies are dolls and stuffed animals.
  • Boomer and co. ultimately manage to escape the cannibals...but Missy and Brewer get off scot-free by the end. When Brewer moans their "winter supply" has escaped them, Missy cheers him up; they still have the two Brawn Hilda women to eat, both of whom are still deep under the drugs' influence...
    Heinous standard?
  • ...Do we have any other kids' shows with serial cannibals? Do we? (Okay, Conan the Adventurer, but that was a freaking Conan the Barbarian cartoon!)
  • No. It's actually astonishing how overt they are with the fact Missy and Brewer don't just kill people, they eat them. They even turn down payment in return for sparing their victims' lives because "you can't eat money." The show is frighteningly in-your-face as to how many people these two have killed and it very, very explicitly shows they've eaten children as well. Even compared to the other villains, these two are so awful it borders on parody.
    Redeeming qualities?
  • Not really. I'm slightly more convinced on Brewer than Missy because Missy really leans into the "doting grandmother" image, cheerfully doting on Boomer when they've kidnapped him and telling him he'll get a taste for flesh in his own time. That said, she behaves the exact same way when she's threatening people, as well. To wit; the Nennog's Co-Dragons also come to Greentown, and one of them also lacks imagination. When he refuses to join them, though, Missy cheerfully puts a blade to his partner's neck while never once dropping the "friendly grandmother" act. It's pure Faux Affably Evil and they only spare Boomer because they want to make another cannibal out of him, with every indication they're not afraid to use force to help that along.

I dig the quote, Meme!

  • Superman: Massacre lives up to his name in his sheer love for slaughter. He's introduced killing an entire ship of superpowered beings and mocking the sole survivor Auron over his teammates' deaths, after which Massacre wipes out the entire population of a small planetoid. Arriving on Earth with a desire to beat Superman, Massacre makes his way across the planet while killing anyone he has to ask for directions and threatening entire towns with destruction. After faking care for his Skimmer so as to escape from Superman, only to chunk the half-dead being into the vacuum of space, Massacre is brought before the Tribunal and has the full breadth of his crimes laid out: he has killed tens of thousands of people across hundreds of worlds simply because he could, and his only recourse when confronted with the families of his many victims is to laugh at them and express desire to kill them all, too.
