Old Complete Monster cleanup thread
Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

There was the suggestion that Video Games be split off into it's own page, which I would support.

This is something to bring up as far as resolved items, but when checking General Grievous, I did browse his Canon Wookieepedia entry and found a couple things cited from The Helmet Collection and Star Wars Encyclopedia among others that could cause issues.
It's stated the factoid that the Separatists altered his brain without his knowledge to make him more aggressive and suppress his memories of his past is still true. Additionally, it's noted that the Kaleesh were likewise driven into starvation due to the Republic backing the Huk like in Legends with this being a major source of his hatred towards the Jedi and Republic. Plus, the crash being a sabotage that Dooku lied about being caused by the Jedi is still a remnant from Legends that carries over.
While I easily see Grievous as a keep, the potential issue comes with the factor of much of his Legends backstory having since come back. When comparing and contrasting the two, the main things that don't line up are the absence of his deceased lover and no word given on if the Huk sold a false flag narrative to the Republic to get their aid. Obviously Grievous isn't a sympathetic character in the slightest, but given that one of his motives remains and that he has possible agency issues, this is something that should be addressed in his entry if he's a keeper.

We did disscus that and decided that at the moment it is to much in “gray canon area” since it comes from some small lines reference books (from which small details and information are frequently contredicted by stories, esspecaly earlier canon ones which are mainly recicled Legends information). What we get from Grievous from canon implies different backstory with even his Wookipedia article going back and fort between that and his Legends backstory.
It isn’t immposible that future stories may chose to incorporate that backstory and disqualify Grievous, but at the moment it is too ambiguosly canon for that.

Got it. The thread moves fast enough I could’ve missed it and the fact it’s small lines in reference books feels like it’s easy enough to ignore. Should we update his resolved items entry to acknowledge that then (Something like “Backstory is left too ambiguous to fully acknowledge.”)?
I would like to propose a change to be made to the entry for Professor Harvey in Octopath Traveler II. The opening statement currently reads "Professor Harvey may be the most sadistic Arc Villain in the entire series". However, considering entries tend to avoid mentioning tropes like Arc Villain, I would like to suggest it be changed to something more effective: "Professor Harvey is an insane scholar obsessed with the One True Magic and the Arch-Enemy of Osvald V. Vanestein." Let me know what you think.
Well, Grievous' backstory in canon hasn't been a consistent issue, as it has only come up twice now, unlike his "care" for Gor (which came up around 4 times within a single month of his proposal). so I don't think it's particularly needed in this case.
Speaking of the resolved items list, does anybody have issues with me altering Yoshikage Kira's entry to clarify more on why he's not bad enough?
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Diamond is Unbreakable): Yoshikage Kira (Fails the heinous standard compared to other villains like Angelo, is indicated to care for Shinobu beyond mere pragmatism, and is shown to be genuinely mentally ill)

- Should NES Godzilla Creepypasta go there; stay with the Godzilla stuff; or both?
- What do we want to call the new page? Video Game Fan Works? Video Games Fan Works? Something else?

Ok here with a rather important cut, are only CM from an Abridged series to my knowledge. Final Fantasy VII: Machinabridged
- Sephiroth is a legendary member of SOLDIER who develops a genocidal hatred for humanity after discovering the truth about his origins through the Jenova project. Marking his introduction with a bloody killing spree through Shinra headquarters, Sephiroth, seeking godhood, leads Cloud and the rest of Avalanche on a chase across the planet to find the Black Materia so that he can use it to summon Meteor, severely damaging the planet and then absorbing the resulting energy into himself. To ensure nothing gets in his way, Sephiroth murders Aerith in the City of the Ancients, once again rubbing it in to Cloud. Believing himself and his "mother" Jenova to be divine punishment incarnate, Sephiroth proves to not only be a shockingly dark villain for an abridged series, but also much more detestable and pettier than his canon counterpart.
Now having watched the work in full I can attest to him be serious enough for this trope and is definitely more evil then the OG
The problem?
He has the same FE as the OG and i don’t really see how being more evil subverts that
He is still injected with Jenova cells in the womb, he is still raised to be a living weapon by Shinra and denied a mother figure, and he sti goes crazy after finding out his life was a lie and wants revenge
Heck tbey okay this up more with a scene of him taking about his past and going even as far to that he would give up all his fame just to have a mother
Plus it doesn’t help his fixation with Jenova is because of a lack of a mother figure combiners with being wronged by humanity
Sure he is a nasty piece of work but his fall is still like the OG so I feel this disqualifies him

has one of the bad guys listed (it's also missing the bad guy from the 3rd movie).
