To-do list:
- Move any wicks and on-page examples that fit Continuity Cameo, Crossover Cameo, or Celebrity Cameo accordingly, and leave any wicks that only fit the supertrope at The Cameo. If The Cameo does not have enough on-page examples for the newly created trope pages (Crossover Cameo and Celebrity Cameo), crosswicking may be necessary.
However, the description also, very vaguely, mentions that fictional animated characters making brief appearances may also count for the trope. Unfortunately, the vague description and broad connotations of the word "cameo" have led to a lot of mixed usage. This wick check of 117 entries displays that the main "correct" usage only accounts for about 20% of the usage. Here's how specific usage is laid out:
- A celebrity briefly appearing in another work : 24 / 117 (20.5%)
- Celebrity appears in the work, just not played by themselves: 3 / 117 (2.6%)
- Cameo from a staff member: 1 / 117 (0.9%)
- A character from the same franchise makes a brief appearance in the work: 41 / 117 (35.0%)
- A different fictional character makes a brief appearance in the work: 19 / 117 (16.2%)
- Appearance from a character by the same author/company as the work: 10 / 117 (8.5%)
- Miscellaneous misuse: 3 / 117 (2.6%)
- Not enough context to tell / murky: 16 / 117 (13.7%)
Or more generally:
- Appearances of real people (whether played by them or not): 28
- Appearances of characters: 70
- Other / unclear: 19
So basically, despite being written about celebrity appearances, most usage is for character appearances.
The Cameo is clearly in need of a split. Here are the various uses that can be spun off into specific tropes:
- The main one, a celebrity making a short appearance in a work (this should probably also be Trivia as it refers to production information)
- Characters from earlier in the series/franchise appearing briefly in a later installment (may overlap with Continuity Cameo but I'm unclear exactly what's going on with that trope)
- Characters from other franchises making brief appearances in a work (Crossover Cameo? May overlap with Lawyer-Friendly Cameo)

I might start then. So many recap pages are hanging on by a thread of only The Cameo and Absentee Actor so if anything this means that a lot more pages will be fed to the cutlist. (I'm not sure what the rules for stubs with recaps actually are so I've been pretty generous.)

I copied the current text of Main.The Cameo to Sandbox.The Cameo and Sandbox.Crossover Cameo in case there's anything we can use when turning the former into a supertrope and the latter into a new subtrope of the new supertrope. We'll probably be copying the current text of Main.The Cameo to Main.Celebrity Cameo as-is as part of its Trope Transplant, but the sandboxes currently have placeholder text on them. I might see if I can make some tweaks later, but I already handled the split of Tier Induced Scrappy and some crowner-related stuff, so I need a break before doing that.
Edit: Oh, right, and I removed updating Continuity Cameo's description from the to-do list because that was already done earlier this year.

Since this thread has been dead for...a long time, I guess I'll work on Sandbox.Crossover Cameo.There's nothing that can be borrowed from The Cameo's description (which is short anyways) so I'll have to come up with relevant details to add from scratch.

I did what I could for Sandbox.The Cameo. Maybe I can work on Sandbox.Crossover Cameo soon since I'm feeling better than I was when I made my previous post.
Edit: Turns out Sandbox.Celebrity Cameo exists to draft that trope's description. I moved the quote and page image to the supertrope since they fit that better, I think.
Edit: Something I'll probably implement in Sandbox.Crossover Cameo's description is that it isn't a full-fledged Crossover or Transplant, and is a one-off appearance by a character who otherwise isn't part of the work or series. That, and replacing the last paragraph with one more in line with Sandbox.The Cameo's last paragraph, since the old definition's last paragraph was moved to Sandbox.Celebrity Cameo (which itself originated from Main.The Cameo).

Main.Crossover Cameo, Main.Celebrity Cameo, and the revised version of Main.The Cameo are now live after a combination of health problems and forgetfulness (the latter probably being due to me working on other TRS threads) caused a delay in getting the pages up, plus Main.Continuity Cameo is a preexisting trope to move examples to. I made The Cameo Wick Cleaning to keep track of wick cleanup.
The new pages don't have any on-page examples yet, since the on-page examples of The Cameo haven't been touched yet. If they still fit the original definition (moved to Celebrity Cameo), it might be necessary to copy off-page examples to the on-page example lists.

I would say go through the wicks on The Cameo and snag any celebrity examples you can find until it's beefy enough. Then re-crosswick with the new name.

Since progress on the splits stalled, I discussed with the other mods whether we should undo the splits while leaving The Cameo as a broader supertrope (covering what used to be misuse). If we do that, we'd just need to move wicks back to The Cameo and then we could close since The Cameo would cover what used to be misuse.

Because "this is taking too long, so let's just give up" isn't a convincing argument. I'm baffled as to why we're having this crowner to begin with.
I know some people comment them out. I sometimes comment out partial context examples but there's no loss if you choose to delete them as they aren't valid examples either way.
