  • Trope: The Cameo
  • Laconic description: Someone famous makes a brief, plot-irrelevant appearance in another unrelated work.
  • Wicks: 13756

The Cameo is supposed to be for celebrities making an appearance in another work. However, it's often used for other kinds of cameos, namely when a fictional character briefly appears in a show. The description has one line suggesting the latter usage also counts, but they represent two different tropes and should probably be split (with the celebrity role probably being better suited as Trivia). There's also a lot of usage for characters from other works appearing in a work, which could be its own Shout-Out subtrope.

Intended target of 117 wicks. Only taking the first example on the page. Potholes bolded.

A celebrity briefly appearing in another work

Ironically, they (except Medibot) were partially there to Retsupurae them (Though Slowbeef admitted in his video that he also wanted to support Jon).
  3. Creator.Bruce Willis: Although Willis ended up being an Advertised Extra and Schwarzenegger merely had an uncredited cameo in this movie, in the 2012 sequel they had much larger roles that were callbacks to their film personas.
  4. Film.Young Guns: Country musician Randy Travis had an uncredited cameo as the gatling gun operator stationed in front of McSween's farm.
  5. Creator.Kevin Mc Hale: NLT had a guest appearance in the infamously bad Bratz: The Movie, and after the band split, Kevin (alongside fellow Glee cast member Darren Criss) appeared in Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night", as a character that manages to be even more of a nerd than Artie. He also makes a brief appearance in the video for One Call's "BlackLight".

  8. Series.Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger: In #7, while Yumeria and Mitsuki reenact a scene from Z-Cune Aoi, a patron in the cafe mouths the words to the scene. This patron is none other than Keiichi Sato who did the designs for Z-Cune Aoi!

  14. Film.Bright: Joe Rogan and his podcast show make a brief appearance at the start, interviewing an Orc spokesman who considers Jakoby a Category Traitor for joining the LAPD.
  15. Creator.Jimmy Stewart: Had an epic and heartwarming one during the final episode of The Carol Burnett Show — Burnett had often mentioned on her show how Stewart was her favorite actor and lamented that she never had the opportunity to share the stage with him. As a surprise for her, the cast and crew, without her knowing, conspired to bring Stewart on the show for a brief appearance. Carol is NOT acting with her astonished and overjoyed reaction. Gushy, but valid.
  16. Recap.Luke Cage 2016 S 1 E 12 Soliloquy Of Chaos: Method Man appears As Himself, held up in a convenience store robbery and exchanging hoodies with Luke after the latter stops the thieves. Method Man later appears on the real-life radio show Sway in the Morning, with its hosts Sway and Heather B. as well.

The subsequent examples listed all fit this, plus a few Star Wars characters treated as celebrities.
  18. Recap. The Nostalgia Critic S 7 E 15: Rob Paulsen and Maurice La Marche, as the crowner to the Pinky and The Brain Running Gag. This is low on context but I know the context and that it's an example.

Celebrity appears in the work, just not played by themselves

A character from the same franchise makes a brief appearance in the work
  1. Literature.Star Trek Picard The Last Best Hope: Spock has a brief, VO cameo during the ongoing exodus from Romulan space. His return to Federation space acts as a bridge between his previous chronological appearance in TNG's "Unification" and his entry into the events of the 2009 Star Trek film. James Swallow further expands on this bridge during Spock's cameo in The Dark Veil.
  2. WebAnimation.Wile E Coyote Ugly: Wile E. appears at the very beginning.
  3. FireEmblemHeroes.Tropes A To E: Before Lilith appeared in Heroes, Nohrian Summer Xander wielded a floatie of her dragon form as a weapon. Lilith eventually gained another cameo as a mask being worn by Yukata Xander. The mask would soon enough go on to become an accessory that can be worn by any other unit, barring Yukata Xander himself.
  4. Characters.Erins Total Magical Adventure Team Geniuses: Running Gag: Izzy returning to the game either as a contestant after previously being eliminated, or just as a cameo at least once per season. The only season she does not do this is World Tour. She has also managed to be on more than one team in every season she has competed in.
  5. Characters.Guilty Gear X: Anji makes a brief appearance in Baiken's Xrd Rev 2 Arcade Mode, trying to contact Baiken to return to the Colony as well as give her information on That Man.

  7. Film.Kamen Rider X Super Sentai Super Hero Taisen: Ryosuke Sakamoto, Yudai Chiba, Asaya Kimijima and Hiroaki Iwanaga provide voiceovers for their characters (Red One, Gosei Red, Kamen Rider Birth and Birth Prototype respectively), but don't appear out of costume.

  9. WMG.Persona 4 Arena Ultimax: If Sho w/ Tsukuyomi is the last slot on the current Arcade character select and doesn't share with regular Sho, then for now the rather static and lifeless single-frame sprite Adachi seen in Yukari's Arcade Mode is likely just The Cameo.
  10. Series. How I Met Your Father: [spoiler:Robin]] appears in the season one finale and gives Sophie advice on her love life.
  11. VideoGame.Mario And Luigi Paper Jam: Antasma appears in the art on one of Bowser's amiibo Battle Cards.

The end of the episode reveals that the National Diet member that Kuroto has held hostage at the start of the episode was none other than Eiji Hino, the proper Kamen Rider OOO.
  14. Recap. My Little Pony Friends Forever Issue 7: Several IDW-specific ponies reappear: Flax Seed and Wheat Grass from the Rarity micro, the PNN newspony and one of the Cloud Gremlins (or at least a costume of him) from the Rainbow Dash micro, and Praiser Pan from the Fluttershy micro, and Tiberus, Luna's pet possum, from her micro.

  16. Recap.Total Drama Suckers Punched: Izzy returns in this episode as Cameron's worst fear.

  22. Anime.Mobile Suit Gundam The08th MS Team: In the final episode Dr. Flanagan from the original MSG series appears in a flashback.
  23. Ineffectual Death Threats: Niftu Cal's (you may remember him better as "the biotic god") ill-advised assault upon Wasea in Mass Effect 2 is preceded by a few boasts about how he will wipe the floor with her. While high. And level 1. And unarmed. It doesn't go well for him. Inverted in the third game's multiplayer, if you choose to give him a cameo. Reaper forces will be swept aside by a great wind in the hands of a good player.
  24. Recap. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 6 E 11 Applejacks Day Off: Spoiled Rich shows up as one of the customers on line for the steam room, bragging about her giant mansion.
  25. ComicBook. The Halo Graphic Novel: Thel 'Vadam, the future Arbiter, appears in his former rank as the Supreme Commander of the Fleet of Particular Justice.
  26. Film.Young And Dangerous: A semi-Spinoff of the franchise, the story tells of Ugly Kwan's rise and fall in the Hong Kong triads. While Francis Ng reprises his role as Kwan and Father Lam makes a cameo appearance, the plot does not necessarily mesh well with canon events.
  27. ComicBook. The Eternal Smile: Duncan is visible in a crowd briefly at the end of "Gran'pa Greenbax," with his mother. Also, Hiro Nakamura puts in a surprise appearance too!
  28. VideoGame.Metal Slug Advance: The main villain of the series, Morden, only appears in portraits during the Final Mission and the Dungeon. Also, the protagonists of the other games are featured in some collectable cards.
  29. Recap.Andy X Challenge S 2 E 18 Merged In Mystery: Virizion, Moltres and Uxie from Pokémon Legends appeared as prime suspects. The work page provides the context of this being a Pokémon fan work, so it goes here.
  30. Recap.X Men S 4 E 3 Sanctuary Part 1: Black Panther is watching mutants assemble to meet with Magneto in Tanzania.
  31. TearJerker.Girl Meets World: The surprise appearance of Mr. Feeny at the end of the episode to congratulate Cory on learning to raise a family.
  32. Anime.Detective Conan Magic File 4: Covers Always Lie: The cover art drawn by Gosho Aoyama has Ran and Kaito Kid about to kiss, to Conan’s dismay. Kid does not show up and is not even mentioned, Ran barely makes a cameo and the real Deuteragonist Hattori is squeezed in the bottom, not even as part of the illustration.
  33. Characters.Eureka Seven Others: Charles briefly shows up in Gravity Boys & Lifting Girl, which takes place before he becomes a mercenary, as an acquaintance of Ruri's and to impart some advice onto Sumner in his usual fashion.
  34. VideoGame.Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War: Imran Zakhaev and Colonel Lev Kravchenko appear during a meeting in KGB headquarters.
  35. Only Known by Initials: In the first season of Pokémon, an early rival of Ash/Satoshi's is a kid called Akira, renamed as A.J., who managed a Sandscrew and is based on one of the Youngsters of Pokémon Red and Blue. Also, he appears as The Cameo in the opening of the season 2 (Adventures on the Orange Islands) and as a character in the manga The Electric Tale of Pikachu.
  36. Theatre.A Very Potter Musical: Ginny and the Weasley boys appear at the start of the play before the second song.
  37. Characters.Grimoire Shiritsu Grimoire Mahou Gakuen: Of sort. Out of the yonkoma comics, she (and her co.worker) is the new character introduced in the series. While other comics are based on the heroine in Grimoire. the other characters however do make a cameo appearance.
  38. Series.American Horror Story Roanoke: Denis O'Hare, Wes Bentley, Cheyenne Jackson, Lady Gaga, and especially Evan Peters have much less screen time than in the last season. Frances Conroy, Finn Wittrock, and Taissa Farmiga go from main or important recurring roles to The Cameo. Matt Bomer is reduced to The Voice, and is not even credited.
  39. Characters.Fire Emblem Gaiden Alms Party: Makes a brief one in the FE1 manga.
  40. YMMV.Westworld: Something similar happened in season 2, where Zahn McClarnon appeared in just one too many episodes, meaning his excellent work in "Kiksuya" was denied guest eligibility, forcing him to compete in supporting against far larger roles when his part that year consisted of playing the lead in one episode, and little more than cameos in a few others.
  41. VideoGame.Far Cry 3: Though the lack of his likeness can really throw off any recognition unless you had prior knowledge of the web series, a head that you can find on the beach is supposed to be Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who was captured, tortured, and eventually (accidentally) killed by Vaas a few days ago, during the events of The Far Cry Experience.

A different fictional character makes a brief appearance in the work
  1. Webcomic.Apricot Cookies: On chapter 7, page 11, a genderswapped Waldo is visible in the stadium crowd.hint
  2. ShoutOut.Sabrina Online: Zig's cross-country take-down of all of her cyber-bullies was a weeks-look remake of the ending to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. She even leaves the duo themselves to beat up one of them.
  3. Adaptation Dye-Job: Sleepless Domain: Magical girls in this setting are distinguished by their brightly colored hair and matching eyes. Therefore, when the main characters of Kiwi Blitz make their cameo in the comic, their appearances are altered slightly to fit this pattern — Chandra's natural brown hair is made several shades lighter, and Steffi, who already dyes her hair bright pink in her home series, gains matching pink irises.
  4. Web Animation.Maekaenderfox: Meggy Spletzer briefly appears in the opening seconds of 2 octolings part 1.
  5. Webcomic.Ask Mattwos Mane 6: Sometimes there will be cameos from Mattwo's other blogs, other tumblr blogs, other video games, etc. '''I'm putting this here as it's generalized enough to cover both "character from author's other works" and "other franchises."
  6. YMMV.Kingdom Hearts The Antipode: Similarly, the Genie impersonating Mario in All That's Left (not to mention Mario himself having an indirect vocal cameo at Fix-It Felix Jr.'s 30th Anniversary Party) became this when six years later, Sora personally shook hands with Mario as the latter welcomed him into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  7. DarthWiki.Dooronpa Otherworld: Booster Gold appears in the epilogue, saving Emma from falling to her death after being boom tubed to Metropolis.
  8. Recap.Yu Gi Oh The Abridged Series S 2 E 18 Final Deathstination: Multiple ghost characters make appearances, including Slimer, Space Ghost, Casper the Friendly Ghost, The Funky Phantom, and even Ghost Nappa (voiced once more by Takahata101).
  9. WebVideo.Final Fantasy In A Nutshell: Expect to see plenty of characters from different games appear in earlier parodies and even later episodes.
  10. WebVideo.Sonic Adventure Abridged: In response to (an In Name Only) Cloud inexplicably showing up at the climax to ask Sonic if he knows where his Cheetos are; "WORST! CAMEO! EVER!"
  11. WebVideo.Golden Book Video Killers: Lots of plush toy versions of characters from different studios (Disney, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, Jay Ward, etc) have made cameo appearances throughout the series. The following characters have made cameos and served as guest hosts; Bolt, Stitch, Dopey, Dug, Ludwig Von Drake, the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat, Lady and Tramp and Si and Am, Marie and O'Malley, Ben Ali Gator, Mushu, Tito, Rabbit, Eeyore, and Piglet, Banzai the hyena, Timothy Mouse, the Big Bad Wolf, Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, Bugs Bunny, Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzalez, Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner, Pepé Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn, Henrey Hawk, the Tasmanian Devil, Marvin the Martian, K-9, Gossamer, Porky Pig, the New Daffy Duck, Wakko Warner, Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Mewtwo, Scooby and Scrappy-Doo, Rainbow Dash, My Pet Monster and Odie.
  12. WebVideo.Point Culture: The episode about the human body has Maestro from Il Était Une Fois... la Vie (voiced by the original voice actor) reacting to Links' commentary along Plectrum and Youki.
  13. YMMV.Vuk The Little Fox: One-Scene Wonder: Most of the rather entertaining and memorable animal characters Vuk encounters (such as Szú, the grumpy hedgehog, Unka, the lovesick frog or Nyau, the feral cat) appear in exactly one scene in the movie, then are never even mentioned again. This shows that there's a big forest out there with many colourful inhabitants. Some of these characters are Crossover cameos from István Fekete's other novels, such as Hú the owl, who stars his own book. Special mention needs to go to the two geese, who provide the funniest scenes of the movie.
  14. Manga.Recorder And Randsell: Hana and Mayu from Morita-san Wa Mukuchi make an appearance in the first episode, while Atsushi and Atsumi make an appearance in the last episode of the former.
  15. Fanfic.Beyond The Outer Gates Lies A High School Library: Harry and Reya's first date is to a familiar book swap meet where a familiar tiny, lavender-haired girl and taller brown-haired boy act as their primary competition.
  16. Anime.Metal Armor Dragonar: Ramba Ral appears in episode 11 dressed in a blue suit. Approaches on Shout-Out courtesy of Shown Their Work, since Ral's referred to as the "Blue Giant." Description says the franchises share some creative staff but I'm unsure if it's enough to go in the below folder.
  17. Recap.BOTO The Ever Convenient Objects Shopping Mall: Map from Object Universe made an appearance in the challenge.
  18. Film.Gang Of Roses: Mario Van Peebles makes a cameo as his character Jesse Lee from Posse.
  19. Blog.MLP Is Real: We have Molestia, Discord and even two users who appeared as a pony and a dragon in this strip. The entry mostly focuses on characters as depicted in other blogs, and I don't have much context on the other users cuz the tumblr is gone, so I'll place it here.

Appearance from a character by the same author/company as the work
  1. WesternAnimation.Street Fighter: Some Alpha characters make cameo appearances in "The Medium is the Message". Doubles as an Early-Bird Cameo for Rose. Several Final Fight characters also appear in the episode.
  2. VisualNovel.Nanatsuiro Drops: The PS2 port features a brief crossover with Shakugan no Shana, as both works are illustrated by Noizi Ito and published by Media Works. The scene itself features Haru and Mei encountering Shana, Yuji, and Alastor as they are eating ice cream.
  3. VideoGame.Donkey Kong Country Returns: Mr. Game & Watch can be seen in the background of Foggy Fumes, hammering away a pipe.
  4. Recap. The Simpsons S 23 E 18 Beware My Cheating Bart: One by Fry and Leela during the final sequence.
  5. Manga.Pandemonium Wizard Village: Beatha from The Jackalope makes an appearance, setting this story sometime before the events of that manga. Putting it here cuz apparently it's part of the same 'verse.
  6. NightmareFuel.Donkey Kong Country: This game actually introduces shadow levels, where almost everything is a silhouette, the entire level coated in black with the a more colorful background. This certainly looks pretty in some levels, like "Foggy Fumes" it looks rather ominous, a factory shrouded in smoggy fumes, silhoutes of buzzsaws, a giant beastly skull, and Mr. Game and Watch hammering away at a pipe. The whole level feels like something out of "Limbo".
  7. Recap.Tiny Toon Adventures S 2 E 2 Going Places: Cecil Turtle appears in the opening wraparound as the bus driver.
  8. Anime. The Night Is Short Walk On Girl: Kai, Yuho, and Kunio can be seen in the background at one point.
  9. Literature. The Private Life Of Genghis Khan: At the end, Khan receives a visit from Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged (of Life, the Universe and Everything fame) to unsurprising effect.
  10. VisualNovel.A Bridge To The Starry Skies: Minato Nagase and Yocchan from Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka make a cameo appearance in the Hoshizora Visual Novel, going on a summer training camp for their tennis club.

    Miscellaneous misuse
  1. VideoGame.Adventures In The Magic Kingdom: Some more of the rides can be seen here also. However, they can't be entered. These include Cinderella's Castle, It's a Small World, Jungle Cruise, and the Disneyland Railroad (the tracks of which surround the overworld). The entirety of Main Street USA is also here, right down to the type of shops, indicated by sprites. These are locations, not characters.
  2. VideoGame.Kiki Kai Kai: Sayo herself appears in many other Taito games. As a boss in the NES port of Rainbow Islands, as the designated Miko for any of the Taito-made Jinsei Game ports, a whole Kiki Kai Kai themed level set with a Sayo-form Manuke included in Bubble Symphony, as a selectable character in Pop N Pop and Space Invaders '95 and as a DLC character for Elevator Action Deluxe. If she's a playable character, it probably goes beyond being a simple cameo.
  3. VideoGame.Revenge Of The Sunfish: Music from other games. Not a character

Not enough context to tell / murky
  1. Series.Heroes Join Forces: Damien Darhk literally appears as a One-Scene Wonder.
  2. YMMV.Sega Superstars: Rogues' Landing is an insanely fun track to play, taking you through the docks, over the floating islands, through a sky tunnel and across a lake (or around it if you prefer) with a great layout, all with an awesome backdrop of the Valuan Empire flying overhead and attacking the islands. But it becomes truly amazing on the transition to Lap 3, when you're confined solely to the air and have to follow the Delphinus towards the Hydra, flying between Valuan and Blue Rogue airships shooting at one another. The final island even has a Valuan ship crash into it for dramatic effect admist the war and race. All this is set to exceptional music which really drives the atmosphere for the laps, and it's not a stretch to say it feels like you're actually playing Skies of Arcadia, at least ship travel-wise. Add in all the fan-pleasing cameos that still add something to those who have never played Skies like Rhaknam circling under the islands and you've got yourself an amazing, memorable level. And the cherry on top? When Sumo presented the Skies of Arcadia level to the game's original producer for feedback, she was moved close to tears. You know a level is amazing when you get a reaction like that.
  3. Film.Karate A Muerte En Torremolinos: Jess Franco as the spirit of master Miyagi.
  4. Characters.Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Characters: Several of the multiplayer characters appear on leave in the Citadel DLC.
  5. Film.Carry On Doctor: Series regular Dilys Laye as the love interest to Ken, Mavis.
  6. Webcomic.Twenty First Century Fox: Too many to list here. Mostly cast members of the author's friends' comics.
  7. Recap. The Goldbergs S 4 E 4 Crazy Calls: The two nerds both named "Mike Levy" from Adam's childhood play the roles of the computer lab teachers. Not celebrities, but still significant real-life people playing a minor role in the work
  8. VisualNovel.Four Two Eight Shibuya Scramble: Aya Kamiki appears as herself looking over Hana's poems. Real life celebrity but doesn't have much context on the role. I assume "appears as herself" means "plays herself" but it's vague since it's a visual novel.
  9. Literature. The Cosmere: Most worldhoppers cameo in works set on other worlds than they come from, like Khriss and Nazh (Taldain and Threnody, respectively, but seen everywhere), Felt and Demoux (both from Scadrial, both later seen on Roshar), Vasher and Vivenna (Nalthis, also on Roshar), Galladon (Sel, also on Roshar) or Hoid (Yolen, seen everywhere). This wording is kind of hard to parse without knowing the work.
  10. Characters.Arby N The Chief: In Season 5.
  11. WesternAnimation.Descendants Wicked World: A bust of Hades is seen in Dr. Facilier's office when Mal and Freddie are searching through it. Not the actual character showing up, I don't know if this counts
  12. Series.Saxondale: Matt Berry as Geoff.
  13. Series.Lifes Too Short: Just like in Extras, every episode involves Davis meeting a well-known celebrity, which never ends well. Might be too plot-relevant to count but it's unclear
  14. Film.An American Carol: Bill O'Reilly, Gary Coleman, Paris Hilton, Zachary Levi, Christopher McDonald, John O'Hurley, the list goes on. The other example is also unclear — it lists an actual specific role but not if it's brief.
  15. American Kirby Is Hardcore: The American versions of the main Disgaea games experience this, abandoning the colorful Super-Deformed Team Shot the JP boxarts use (Which also includes most of the generic character classes, and sometimes even The Cameo and/or Big Bad), in favor of an image that makes the game seem darker and more serious than it really is (Most of the time, at least).
  16. Film.Space Sheriff Next Generation: Akira Kushida in Shaider, and also, while more substantial to the plot than most, the films could be almost entirely the same without the appearances by Den Iga, Annie and Kojiro Oyama
