This is the first time I've ever heard that joke.

A lot of examples are devolving into complaining, especially on StockParodyJokes.Video Games. For example (grammar errors not my own):

  • Mighty No. 9:
    • The game is bad and proof that Keiji Inafune is a scammer who takes advantage of Mega Man fans nostalgia.
    • It tried too hard to become a franchise, and its attempts at doing so backfired severely.
    • The "make the babd guys cry like an anime fan on prom night" line from the laumch trailer instantly became a stock joke, often applied iroically to the game itself, which was a critical and commercial flop.

Again, some of this really sounds like Memetic Mutation, especially that last one.

EDIT: Generally, Wolf Thunder and Phediuk seem to be adding a lot of bashy entries lately, particularly to StockParodyJokes.Video Games.

Pinging ~Wolf Thunder and ~Phediuk to this thread, because they've been adding a lot of entries lately and I think they could help us figure out what kind of entries are valid.

From the Aniume and Manga list:

  • Kimba the White Lion: Originally, people joked about Disney stealing the plot from Kimba to use as a blueprint for The Lion King (1994) without giving any credit to Osamu Tezuka. After Adam Johnston did a two and a half hour-long video debunking the controversy and talking about what Kimba is really about, most Kimba parodies nowadays involve Kimba being a massive racist, abusing his children, and/or casually carrying his deceased father's corpse around.

I've seen people make the serious claim that The Lion King was a Kimba ripoff, but never parodies. As for the Adam Johnston review - it might have debunked the claim (I'm not a fan of the youtuber), but I'm not aware of any parodies that mention it, and the whole example seems to be more focused on praising Johnston than on any parodies.

[up]I've seen people joke about the accusation in shows like The Simpsons, and the r/KimbaMemes subreddit is filled with jokes about the latter.

There's at least one The Nostalgia Critic episode that mocks the controversy too, though it wasn't specifically a parody of Lion King. I've seen some art mocking Lion King by painting everybody like their supposed Kimba equivalents, I believe?

Here's an example from the live-action TV page that I think gives you a pretty good example on what's a parody joke and what isn't.

  • Baywatch:
    • Saying the show only existed to give people something to masturbate to in the days before easily-available Internet porn.
    • The slow-motion scenes of the lifeguards running are parodied a lot, often with the lifeguards moving too slowly to rescue people in time.

I added the latter myself, and I think it's a perfect example of what this trope is supposed to be about. However, the former sounds less like a parody joke and more like a stock complaint.

Yeah, I'm honestly wanting to take this to TRS more and more to put some more obvious standards in place. I'm seeing more and more bashing by the day. Only problem is, the trope attracts mostly on-page problems, so a wick check may be difficult.

[up][up]Also, that first one sounds too inappropriate for this wiki.

I'd support a TRS.

EDIT: Just had a look at the western animation page.

Rainbow Dash is a lesbian and dates either Fluttershy or Applejack. The Distant Finale heavily implying Rainbow Dash and Applejack end up living together doesn't hurt.

I'm pretty sure ships aren't parody jokes.

PAW Patrol: The show is police propaganda, and Chase defends or participates in Police Brutality, sometimes especially towards minorities.

Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement much? I've heard people say things like that about Paw Patrol, but they were being serious.

Thanks. I thought you were talking in the imperative until I went to edit the page and realised I couldn't find Paw Patrol there.

Actually, Rainbow Dash being a Butch Lesbian is a fairly common parody joke. It's not always a ship thing — she may be depicted as gay just for Queer People Are Funny and Queer Colors jokes. Off the top of my head, I know PONY.MOV makes fun of the "gay Rainbow Dash" thing.

I added the PAW Patrol example (but not the "sometimes especially towards minorities" part), because I was assuming "parody" extended to really common jokes and parody fanart and stuff. It's not necessarily a ROCEJ violation since we're talking about a dark joke about a fictional dog, not claiming anything about all cops. That said, I concede it better fits something like Memetic Mutation if only because PAW Patrol parodies barely exist from what I see.

The way it was written sounded more like it was talking about popular ships, though. As for the PAW Patrol one, I've seen people legitimately criticise it for endorsing police brutality (I'm not even gonna go there), so that's why I felt like it didn't belong there.

[up]Talkin' about the RD thing, I agree, not helped by the spoiler. I don't reckon her (assumed) lesbianism is used as a parody either. By assumed, I mean just assumed, not assumed=wrong.

This is on StockParodyJokes.Western Animation for Phineas and Ferb:

  • Doofenshmirtz building an inator to acheive a mundane task. Alternatively, he refers to mundane objects as (thing)inators.

Thing is... it's already a joke in the show that Doof often builds inators for petty reasons, just cuz he doesn't want to get up and do something himself. I know Redundant Parody is a thing, but I think the treatment of the whole "inator" gag is closer to Memetic Mutation and is more of a fandom thing than a parody thing.

[up] Actually, a few entries mention there's some overlap with Redundant Parody when describing a stock joke is actually making fun of something that's already addressed in the original work.

But I don't think most people making that joke are doing it thinking they're making an original parody. I think they realize the show has that running theme and they just roll with it. And how is this different from Memetic Mutation? I can't even think of any PNF parodies that use this gag, just fandom jokes.

  • X Men: Jean Grey is completely useless.

I'm not sure if this is joked outside of the fandom or not.

~Plasma Power, I think we should probably discuss why these entries don't count instead of vaguely calling them "trash." I mean, I know why they don't count (this work is rarely parodied and usually doesn't use these concepts in parodies), but when you don't explain your reasoning, it's not gonna effectively prevent further misuse.

~Dongwa Chan uncommented out an example that was commented out for being a stock criticism more than a stock joke (a problem which is getting increasingly worse, btw).
