Wick Check Project

I might do Outnumbered Sibling; the description mentions some meaning behind it, but every example I've seen is just "Bob has five sisters".

Went ahead and made it here. Even only 10 wicks in, yeah, it's not looking good.

I think the trope would be more tropeworthy if it's about "it's difficult to be the only guy/girl in a family and everyone keeps teasing me about it (or all others have one contrasting personality)".

Right. If I take it to TRS, I'd probably end up suggesting the trope is either disambiged (if the good ideas already exist) or has its good concepts yarded, or both.

For example, I Have Brothers uses the dynamic to explain why a girl does tomboyish things or knows how to fight.

Added a bunch of wicks to things. Probably gonna finish up Distaff Counterpart Wick Check while I'm at it, unless someone else wants to jump in

Finished the Villainous Aromantic Asexual wick check! Results are here. I'll clean it up later.

The result is that the misuse/lack of context heavily outweighs the good examples, so it'll probably need a trip to TRS as well.

At least this time there's some possible split off concepts to try and yard or TLP, so it might not be a total loss.

Oh, and I did go ahead and finish Distaff Counterpart Wick Check. It ain't lookin' good.

There's this discussion in Trope Talk wondering if Uncanny Valley should be split between intentional (that would go in the main page) and unintentional (that would remain in ymmv) Audience Reactions examples, so it may be worth making a wick check to see which examples are which. If the root square method is the way to go, there are 86 wicks to be checked. It's also been pointed out that the trope's been misused for every unsettling and creepy animation, regardless of the eerie feeling coming from the "quasi-realism".

Quick update: You Can Panic Now Wick Check is now at 25 wicks out of 50. Quick question: what should I do if a page links to the trope in question more than once?

You can keep an example count in addition to a wick count.

And the Diary Wick Check is done!

While most of the usage (26/50 wicks) was indeed "diary exists", 12/50 examples referred to diary-style writing or narration, meaning that could be its own trope. 9/50 wicks were scattered other kinds of usage, and 3/50 were unclassifiable.

I'm going to draft an OP in the TRS Queue right now.

I definitely think a "diary-style writing" trope could be a solid TLP split.

What should we do with the Nosebleed Wick Check?

IDK. I've been wondering about that one for a while. It's not the first time the trope has been checked, and every time, the results show that it's not being misused. I'm not sure there's any leg to stand on if we try and TRS it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the trope and the wick check proves that. I guess we can ask ~Vandagyre if they plan to do anything with it.

Some people think the trope is too general because of the name but no one is misusing it for just nosebleeds.

Feel free to do with it what you wish. The trope could stand to have ZCEs cleaned up, but I think that's something most tropes need every now and then.

In that case, may I cut the wick check?

Tailor-Made Prison is defined as "single-person Alcatraz", but many of the example contexts either: 1. describe multi-person prisons 2. describe normal and populated prisons with one modified (or unmodified) cell 3. don't describe what unique security measures are used, or do mention but they are rather general 4. don't feature the prison at all.

This could be something I may want to research somewhere in the future, even if for a cleanup.

I'm curious to know if it has any overlap at all with Improvised Imprisonment.

I've noticed at least two examples that talk about someone getting trapped or restrained in not-a-prison and then the room being sealed off or getting more security. Not common, but possible to move. And some a blatant Sealed Evil in a Can.

Hey, so the Berserk Button Wick Check is complete, but I noticed a lack of Soapbox Sadie examples. Can someone please add a wick that fits that mold so that section isn't empty?

Well, can't we just delete the folder altogether if there were no wicks found that fit that category? I don't think we should hunt for a wick that does.
