English Localization Cleanup

Go To

The Administrivia policy for works created in other languages is Troping Works Created in Other Languages. At the moment, this is focused on works with official translations.

More broadly, TV Tropes has a rule that the latest English translation will normally take priority over the original (some exceptions are listed on the Administrivia page), but many pages and examples still use older titles and character names. This cleanup is to help relieve that.

For policy discussions, see the wiki talk Translation Policy thread.

For pages needing work, see here: Sandbox.English Localization Cleanup

"Work Titles & Localization Cleanup" should be clear enough.

Since the split thread is getting some traction, I guess we can leave the title of this one alone.

What's with Bron|Broen? It's not called like that, it's just Swedish and Danish titles glued together. It should be called The Bridge (2011) because it aired in UK before it got own remake.

Also for Forbrydelsen, if it aired in UK as "The Killing" (US has their own remake), shouldn't it be called The Killing 2007?

I'd like to bring up Manga.X 1999..

In 1992, CLAMP published the first chapter of an apocalyptic manga called X.

At some point between 1993 and 2001, Viz translated it into English, under the title X/1999. During this time, there were two animated adaptations - an OVA in 1996 and a TV series in 2001, both released under the title X; neither was ever called X/1999. In 2011, Viz rereleased the manga, now calling it simply X.

Since X/1999 was only used for the initial publication of the English manga, which has since reverted to X, and was never used for either of the animated adaptations, I move that we should move the main page to Manga.X (or possibly "X (manga)" if subpage collision is an issue), with X/1999 serving as a redirect.

I think we should go with Manga.X 1992 as Manga.X Manga is redundant with the work's namespace.

How about Manga.X Clamp instead (disambiguating by creator)? "Clamp" is front and center on the covers, so it's an obvious association.

I think we should stick with X/1999 since it's a distinct official title.

[up]It's a title that was only used temporarily. The manga is currently published in English as X, and no adaptation has ever been released as X/1999.

Stumbled upon Kodomomuke and it seems to be using the original Japanese names for a lot of works before listing the English ones. Can't take a crack at it now but it probably fucks with indexing.

Discussion on the title of Rebuild of Evangelion.

My thoughts are that unless we can get confirmation that "New Theatrical Edition" is the official English title and not just a translation of the Japanese title, I would just leave it at "Rebuild of Evangelion", especially since "Rebuild of Evangelion" is used in at least one official description.

New Theatrical Edition is the closest we have to an English title. Has it ever actually been released as Rebuild?

As the English version clearly says though, that's the name of an "extra feature" - a making-of, according to descriptions online.

Personally I prefer to keep it as Rebuild of Evangelion. If only because it's catchier and less wordy than Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition, plus more English people are likely more familiar with that title by now, since that's what people usually call them.

Also if it means anything, both Amazon Prime's page and GKIDS' page for 3.0+1.0 use the Rebuild of Evangelion name when referring to the films in the description.

So it is used as an official name for the franchise

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent has been released in English, so that's something I'll be reviewing over time because at least one name doesn't match the localization.
