English Localization Cleanup

Go To

The Administrivia policy for works created in other languages is Troping Works Created in Other Languages. At the moment, this is focused on works with official translations.

More broadly, TV Tropes has a rule that the latest English translation will normally take priority over the original (some exceptions are listed on the Administrivia page), but many pages and examples still use older titles and character names. This cleanup is to help relieve that.

For policy discussions, see the wiki talk Translation Policy thread.

For pages needing work, see here: Sandbox.English Localization Cleanup

[up] If the official English translation is the original Shakugan no Shana then it's the way it is.

[up][up]No official English translation as of yet. Either a transliteration or a literal translation is acceptable.

So, sometime this week when I am free I plan on moving both Detective Conan and Mahou Sensei Negima! to their proper localized titles. It's going to take a while to move 2000-3000+ wicks but someone has to do it.

[up] We should probably discuss the Detective Conan/Case Closed case further, because it's technically a dueling-translations case.

Which regions used Detective Conan for English-language releases?

[up]Disclaimer: This is all from Wikipedia.

From what I can tell, both the manga (Viz, 2004-present) and anime (Funimation, 2003-present) use Case Closed. These are the only current/ongoing versions of the work. Funimation's localizations of the films (2006-10) also used Case Closed.

In the Philippines, Animax Asia had a short run of the anime in 2006. It used Detective Conan. From what I can tell, this is the only English release of the series to use that name. However, it never made it to a major market and lasted less than a year before being canceled.

I see no policy-based reason to not make the move to Case Closed. Not doing so would require an absurd definition of "most recent." I haven't watched the show and have no knowledge of how the subs handle character names so I can't make the call on them, though those might need changing as well.

North America, Europe, and Australia - basically most Western /English speaking countries use Case Closed. Shogakukan Asia and the aforementioned Animax Asia use Detective Conan but those localizations arent nearly as internationally known or uses as Case Closed is.

As far as I can remember, Case Closed still uses English names for everyone.

Consensus decided a long time ago to use Detective Conan, so it should stay there. Moving it is a lot of work for little benefit. You should move some of the smaller work pages listed in the OP first.

[down]Not sure, I just heard that a long time ago the community settled on the title Detective Conan.

Wait, is this just the JoJo situation all over again? A supposed past "consensus" we can't prove exists?

Jojo characters and powers are named copyrighted music names and official localizations have to do silly Writing Around Trademarks renames. The policy demands all names to be changed but no one did yet because, honestly, pretty much all Jojo tropes are unfamiliar with the loc names since no one uses them outside of jokes about them, which makes the fix a big chore that would require double checking with a list or something. Some people are still arguing to open an exception but are never convincing enough, so this stalemate is mantained until someone bothers to search the official names and edit all the pages with them.

[up]Sorry, I misread as "what is the Jojo situation again?".

Can we please just take care of the easier, uncontroversial moves before dealing with the JoJo and Detective Conan cans of worms?

I believe JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo should be at JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. That's the original Japanese title and the title of the anime in both Japanese and English. I believe the only place it was officially called "Vento Aureo" was post-2005 Japanese manga covers which rendered the whole title in Italian as Le Bizzarre Avventure di GioGio Parte 5: Vento Aureo.

Moved Hirunaka no Ryuusei to Daytime Shooting Star. However, Ao Haru Ride needs to be moved to Blue Spring Ride.

What names should Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 examples use? I see a lot using the Japanese names. Are they used in the newest localization?

[up][up] They were only dubbed once. Later on, in 2013 ish there was an official English subbed version that Funi now has the rights to but I don't know if they use the English names or the dub title. But the old English dub seems to be under Netflix these days.

In the west, both series are known as Digimon:Digital Monsters. Adventure 02 is just referred to as the second season of Digital Monsters in English and doesn't have its own unique title.

[up] I meant the characters names. I see examples that refer to them as Yamato, Sora, etc. I know the (original?) English dub kept the Japanese names, but they're usually referred to by Americanized names.

I think we may have to leave the Digimon series at their Japanese titles, since everything before Digimon Savers was just called Digimon: Digital Monsters. It looks like the Yami no Purple Eyes OVA was licensed in English as "Purple Eyes in the Dark".

I moved Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi to You and Me and Her and cleaned the wicks.

[up] We would have to completely reorganize them again. As pointed out above, everything before Savers was under Digimon:Digital Monsters and dont have their own unique names. In the original Japanese Adventure, Adventure 02 ,Tamers, and Frontier were all different series but in the west they are just different seasons of the same show. We have to come up with our own classification for them if we go with the English title for the older anime series.

We could go with Digimon 1 for Adventure, Digimon 2 for Adventure 02, Digimon 3 for Tamers and Digimon 4 for Frontier but that's kinda awkward compared to keeping their individual Japanese titles.

So, Zettai Karen Childrenand Anime. The Unlimited Hyoubu Kyousuke were licensed as Psychic Squad and Unlimited Psychic Squad respectively by Sentai Filmworks so they need to moved to those names.

And Katekyō Hitman Reborn! is localized as Reborn.

Moved Reimei no Arcana to Dawn of the Arcana. Moving the wicks now.

[up]I'd prefer to keep Katekyō Hitman Reborn! at its current title to distinguish it from ComicBook.Reborn. Also Katekyō Hitman Reborn! seems to be the more common title, and I worry that renaming it could negatively impact our search engine performance.
