Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

[up] "for reasons including realistic Gorn, visual violations of The Content Policy (images from works that were cut due to the policy remain until a good replacement) or Copyright."

I actually did consider linking to Handling Spoilers, but Handling Spoilers doesn't mention anything about images to be relevant (maybe it should).

I think we can swap Everything You Wanted to Know About Changing Names (unless I've already said so, ironically) with one of the redirects.

[up][up]That wording for "NSFW/Image Macro" works due to the additional part about images from works that violate the content policy (such as the one on What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?) being allowed in at least some cases.

I edited my post to add on to what I said about changing the name of the page about changing names, but since there ended up being a pagetopper, I'll copy it here:

I didn't want to rename Everything You Wanted to Know About Changing Names without further input because when I moved How to Create a Work's Page and Works' Pages Are a Free Launch to How to Create a Work Page and Work Pages Are a Free Launch, respectively, only one letter was removed and it was because multiple people had already brought up how the use of "works" instead of "work" made those two sound kind of awkward, plus there were debates over whether there should be an apostrophe or not, and removing the "s" seemed like the easiest way to put an end to those debates.

Out of the options, I think "Trope Renaming Guidelines" fits the style for Administrivia pages best.

Favoring Trope Renaming Guidelines.

Sorry for a bothering dp, at Administrivia.Namespace. "RealLife/" is just the examples soft-split of the Real Life page and probably isn't noteworthy as a namespace.

Per the decision on the How to list foreign VAs on character pages thread, can we get a new note or section on Administrivia. How To Create A Character Page that states how to list voice actors on these pages?

I think a good place would be before or after the "You may add an actor..." section, since they are similar subjects. Maybe something formatted like this?

You may add a voice actor (if they have one) above the description. Please note that only the actors for the language of the original production and the language the character sheet is in (if different) should be listed first. Any foreign voice actors should be listed in a tag after the original and local VAs.
Use the format ->Voiced by: [actor name] (original language), [actor name] (local language) [actor name] (foreign language)

Now it hasn't exactly been decided on how these things should be formatted (So take that last sentence in the example with some salt, I'm just spitballing here). If it should be a regular note tag or a labelnote (perhaps [[labelnote:Foreign [=VAs]]=]?) If bars (|) should be used instead of commas (in cases where one language has multiple VAs)?

Suggestion for Zero-Context Example

General tips:
 • Do not rely on the trope's name: Always write examples as if the trope name isn't present. Imagine if the trope is obscured, renamed, or replaced with trope ID number, the example still has to make sense.
 • Write for a general reader: Always write examples in such a way that it's apparent all required aspects of the trope are present in the described case. Other people shouldn't know the work to be able to tell if it counts.

Suggestion for How to Write an Example and How to Create a Work Page

Do not use Characterization Tags. It may be a practice in Fanfics, but we want characters be described in proper English.

For being a rule, Characterization Tags isn't mentioned on any Admin/ page.

[up] Indeed the page on characterization tags are absent, but it's really specific. Maybe that can be expanded to inappropriate fan-speak?

[up] Not sure, felt it's the same kind of issue as other "Write for a General Audience" mentions and is still really common on pages.

Regarding trope names in ZCE, what I had in mind are the annoying examples I had to fix are of "X is this", "X says this trope word for word", "looks like one" and "of the X variety" kind, so I've figured there may be a common factor where people think the trope is grammatically a part of the example.

The "saying the trope title" is distressingly common coughKill Em Allcough, so I think that's good to include. "X is this" is covered, "Looks like one" is another flavor of "this", and I believe "of the X variety" is usually found among the context in another example or is covered by the "Alice combines this with Rich Bitch" example.

The PM policy page should probably be linked to on Administrivia.Notifiers and Administrivia. What To Do If You Are Suspended (in the latter case, turning the first reference to private messages to a wick to the page would probably be sufficient) when it goes live in addition to being indexed on Main.Administrivia and Nl.Administratie.

And yeah, I agree with the name Administrivia.Trope Renaming Guidelines. I was holding off on renaming it myself since I've kind of been taking a break, particularly because of the moratorium on calling TRS threads until January 2.

Working on Sandbox.Private Message

Looking good so far. One thought on a tangent - the PM sandbox draft clarifies that you shouldn't share PM contents with others, and any query quoting a PM should be marked private (mods only).

The query form itself does not mention that as a scenario that needs a private query.

Assuming this guidance makes it into the final published PM page, any scope to update the wording next to the query form's ‘private' checkbox to keep the guidance consistent across both places?

Otherwise we're relying on those who raise a query reading and remembering the Administrivia PM rules. (Which you'd hope was true anyway, but...)

We can't change the text on the form, though I think it's covered by "stuff only for moderators".

If it is then How to Make a Custom Title needs

 • Displaying longer titles in case the intended wikiword would hit the 64-character limit.

I've suggested that it shouldn't be there, precisely because knowing that 64 character count isn't immediately obvious, plus there are a number of places where such an article could be cut off. Essentially, I don't want that to be a standard exception because I would rather discussion occur before an article (or group of articles, such as a work's recap) get a longer title by use of the custom wikiword. That way we can also note the discussion in comment markup on the main page of the article.

I'm just concerned that doing such a thing would trick people into trying to use the wrong title, or thinking that they can use titles that long. Wiki words can be very deceptive if you don't know how to double check.

Made some tweaks to Administrivia.Namespace to account for where to put works from now-deprecated namespaces, since the deprecated namespaces were removed (aside from a leftover reference to Machinima/ in the note for Fanfic/) without listing their new locations.

I ended up checking the page after noticing that a light novel was moved from the now-correct Literature/ namespace back to the deprecated LightNovel/ namespace.
