Are we endorsing RL landmarks as Stock Settings tropes?

There are pages likes Tokyo Tower and Down L.A. Drain that collect works set at those locations. We certainly have as much works set at Mount Rushmore or the Hollywood hills but we haven't made these places into tropes unless there was some playing with the setting like in Rushmore Refacement or Mock Hollywood Sign.

I wanted to start a TRS thread about this topic but it was deemed to general to be discussed there. The question is, can a landmark be so iconic that its mere presence in a work is noteworthy as a trope? Discuss.

I think it depends how much narrative weight the landmarks have. Down L.A. Drain is a place that is both iconic and not normally accessible, so choosing to go there in a story is a narrative choice that shows that the characters are bad boys or desperate. It has the added bonus of having out-of-story film industry reasons for being used. It also tends to be used for a specific plotline (car chases).

Wheras Tokyo Tower seems like it's just The Same But More Specific to Monumental Battle or Eiffel Tower Effect.

In theory these sort of things should be both ridiculously common and the location should have a distinct impact on the overall look and feel of the media. The Tokyo Tower seems to be derailed with examples about it being merely seen as part of the city (which is more The Eiffel Tower Effect), but otherwise the location seems distinctive. It, Down L.A. Drain, BBC Quarry and Kirk's Rock all fall under a similar principle in that they are common filming locations because of their unique look and being close enough to major production offices. This is fundamentally related to other setting tropes like Only in Miami.

If someone were to propose a certain location as a trope I would say A) there should be an almost excessive number of examples (well more than a dozen at launch), B) it should be a common filming location either as itself or California Doubling for something else and C) it is a notable landmark that visitors would recognize for it's uniqueness and is not merely a certain area of town.

Now, I would argue it isn't a Useful Notes page because the focus IS on its use in media, but maybe Trivia in the same way Recycled Set is trivia. But I can also see it as main page material in the way Viva Las Vegas! is main page.

Hey, It's That Place! covers a lot of the places that show up frequently in media, and is trivia...

I feel like these should just be Useful Notes or something.
