1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Thread_Watch seems to have a issue, the threads don't disappear from Thread_Watch and it's more or less just become a version of the Followed_Threads section sorted by most recent updates.

Having the same bright highlighting problem with my posts in night vision.

edit: They're now highlighted with a grayish dark blue that's actually rather visually appealing

This is interesting! I've been away from TV Tropes for a while and had no idea there was going to be a redesign.

I had the same problem a lot of other users reported, of coming in logged as someone else, but luckily I got back into my own account after just one attempt at logging out.

It's annoying that the "Welcome to TV Tropes!" sign now takes up nearly my entire desktop screen so I have to scroll down to look at anything else, but I've noticed other recently-designed sites doing that too, so there's probably a reason behind it. Is it more convenient for mobile users in some way?

Highlighting a "Featured Trope" and the newest trope are great ideas, very like the Wikipedia main page! Also don't mind the increase in blue in the color scheme.

(Incidental note: My text cursor is invisible as I'm typing this comment, making it harder to pick up writing after a short distraction because I can't see what part I was editing, so I may make unnecessary spaces and line breaks. Most likely I just made a mistake with my own computer, but the blinking cursor shows up where it's supposed to when I'm typing on other websites, so I'll mention it here just in case. Has it happened to anyone else?)

Is there any chance we could have the thread watchlist hide threads we've already fully checked out again?

It's real cluttered right now

Imma post a compilation of issues reported so far:

  • Wrong account logins.
  • What happened to the find posts by troper search function
  • "watchlist is all messed up. Everything automatically becomes unread when I leave the page, which didn't happen previously. "
  • Edits don't save.
  • The characters "files" that contained all respective Character tropes now don't show ALL the tropes when you open them.
  • Night Vision has a problem with new posts as it displayed them as light gray on bright
  • a lack of automatic line breaks means that one long "word" can get out of the box and further and further to the right, making it necessary to scroll
  • everything got shrunken down. Nothing pops out, anymore; it's all miniature images you'd see on your standard textbook wiki.
  • notes were just subscripts? Now they're normal text and it's incredibly distracting.
  • The "save changes" button in the user profile setting is missing.
  • thread watchlist. For someone who has many threads on it, needing to see all of them every time I check is very obtuse and gives me no benefit.
  • The Thread Watchlist is called "Following" on the main forum page. "Thread Watchlist" seems to only show up in threads.
  • The floatbox right markup doesn't seem to work anymore, see Media.
  • can't get the desktop site to display on mobile even when I specifically request it.
  • links to outside sites now have small text.
  • Also folders are closed by default which is nice
  • text colors not working
  • can we bring back the sequential numbers above each post?
  • Internet Explorer here, quite a few problems from my part. Like when you click on the avatar, the dropbox is thrown up in a way that it only shows messages and log out. Also it doesn't seem to remember what display settings you have put even though it shows them being on
  • On the forums, clicking "mark all as read" glitches when you're doing it for an entire section, instead of an individual subforum.
  • "Replies to Active YKTTW's:" shows up as blank for me and I can't find the old YKKT Ws I was following (like ASMR, Open Source, etc.)
  • Today's featured Trope to not actually tell you what the name of today's featured trope?
  • it keeps telling me this thread is private.
  • The "Related Pages" list is out of alphabetical order.
  • User badges don't show up on mobile based on Discar's post
  • You Tube embeds seem to be so broken that they're now invisible.
  • The avatar galleries show avatars for tropers on only one column, even if you have a rather wide desktop computer and Wide Load on, see this.
  • I feel like the sidebar could be made thinner by.
  • added one sentence to a Tropes page and I got kicked back to the editing page along with the heading "You are attempting to change too much of this article."
  • I go to edit a page or type a post the cursor that tells you where you are typing is invisible
  • all the images are so tiny now in work pages. They are like, what 180 pixels wide instead of the previous max of 350?
  • Save Draft button is broken, too, clicking it takes you to a white screen that says no thread with that ID can be found. Oddly enough, it still manages to save the draft anyways so that aspect's working at least.
  • Actual forum threads look fine in portrait mode, but landscape's got that same problem where text feels a tad too big
  • contrast is now needed in Night Vision's highlighted posts.
  • The "more" option not being a dropdown anymore is gonna cause some pages to be a mess.
  • "Remember me" doesn't seem to be working, I have to log in every time I restart Firefox
  • images seem to have regular ratio if they are posted on the forums, but are centered to the middle of the post instead of left or right.
  • no option to go back to the thread watchlist from the bottom of a given thread?
  • The Trope Repair Shop: clicking on "show options" on a crowner doesn't work.
  • the link in "Bulletins" posted on the main page leads to "File not found."
  • "Show Spoilers" option was taken away
  • "Folders Open" option isn't taking effect.
  • preview button no longer seems to do anything
  • Quoteblocks being entirely italicized doesn't really serve a purpose except to make it impossible to italicize within the quote
  • Wiki Words are broken. Seemingly all of them, all the custom formatting, (colons, apostrophs etc.) are gone.
  • Redirects are broken and just say [[redirect:Page Name]] instead of actually taking you to the right page.
  • It's not obvious at first what indicates new posts on the forums (it's the board name displaying in bold).
  • post numbers are missing.
  • the color my posts are highlighted in with night vision on is not only blinding but makes the text almost completely unreadable.

There seems to be some issues regarding the folder control command for certain pages. For example, on Funny. The Runaway Guys Mario Party, the image causes the "open/close all folders" button to move down over the Mario Party 3 folder and if you try to click it, it only opens the Mario Party 3 folder. I don't know if this is an issue with only the Sugar Wiki pages, but I thought I should bring it up.

First, the link in the Bulletin is borked.
Second, can we please not see already-read threads in the thread watchlist? It's really confusing.
Third, can we please get the thread watchlist's name back? "Following" is a) not descriptive and b) also the name of other things (like your page watchlist).
EDIT: Fourth, can we get a "follow thread" button on the bottom as well as on the top of the thread? There's no reason to remove that functionality... Oh, and can we also get the thread pages on top of the page back please?

I tried to edit a page and got this warning: You are attempting to change too much of this wiki article.

The change only involved 226 characters.

I was attempting this in Chrome (v67).

I tried switching to IE (11), but I get a security alert that reads: Revocatoin information for the security certificate for this site is not available. Do you want to proceed? After clicking "yes" or "no" a two dozen times on each page, I got the same "You are attempting to change too much of this wiki article." message.

Unrelated, but on both browsers the clickable notes are the same size as the main text, instead of being superscript.

On desktop (Firefox) it seems like pages are randomly switching between editable and locked. I assume that's just the webmaster working things out still.

Images are way too small now—350 was already just large enough in a lot of cases.

The way sub-bulleting currently works isn't the most readable. I would rather have the indent extend for the entire bulleted paragraph, instead of the second line starting directly underneath the bullet.

I absolutely like featured tropes, and even featured works (such as the one on the main page right now).

But if we're going to do featured work pages, shouldn't we at least make sure the featured work pages are good? Cop and a Half says right on the page, "Needs A Better Description: Needs more plot details". This doesn't really feel feature-worthy.
