Condemned by History is a problem trope for many reasons. It leads to edit warring and confusion over what qualifies. In this thread we'll look for bad examples, and look for feedback. Here are the guidelines for this trope:

  1. The franchise has to be truly popular and loved at first. Things that are So Bad, It's Horrible don't count.
  2. Simply losing popularity isn't enough. We need to see an actual backlash, with liking it being considered bizarre. Otherwise, every not-so-famous film or concluded television series would be here.

Let's go!

Oh yeah Rick and Goldberg in particular I know have large amounts of people who also infamously totally downplay what they do. (so using them as examples is not a good choice). Draco in Leather Pants will sadly always be a thing despite what the creators do for partiality interesting villains.

I guess to get back at the original question that was brought up in the other thread, the point about anti-hero-centric stories wouldn't really apply for Condemned by History considering that the amount of technicalities involved would make it a shoehorn there (to say nothing of how it was first posted as a misused Seinfeld Is Unfunny example).

I’d say that the Anti-Hero as a whole doesn’t qualify for this trope because of how broad it is but rather a specific type of Anti-Hero mentioned in that post might qualify as a Discredited Trope

Is there a specific type of Anti-Hero that encompasses all those characters? I mean, Don Draper and Chuck Bass aren't really on the same level as Tony Soprano or Walter White.

[up][up]Again, from the looks of it, the matter seems to focus more on anti-heroes that get over-glorified by a Misaimed Fandom (even when the characters aren't meant to be seen as sympathetic), which again sounds shoehorn-y.

[up][up]Which of these are that. The whole point of Several of these guys is that theyre unstable or really sad and broken under everything.

Maybe specific anti-heroic characters can qualify, rather than a specific type of anti-hero. Scrappy from Scooby Doo and Slender Man are listed (not anti-heroes, but they are individual characters who are CBH)

This whole entry reminds of the ones cut from Genre-Killer for having ludicrously specific 'genres'.

Interestingly, there is a TLP for "Trend Killer" to cover exactly that sort of Genre-Killer shoehorning. That said, the entry as it was written is hilariously biased and strawmans most of the works it criticizes (or praises, for that matter).

I've looked at the music page as I saw an entry on Flo Rida and I don't think he counts.

Do you think The Fairly Oddparents is a good example? I see a lot more people hating on it because of its Seasonal Rot than people being nostalgic over it.

[up]Well that depends; has the Seasonal Rot retroactively tainted perception of the perceived pre-rot episodes or is it just a SpongeBob SquarePants situation of "the early material was good, but it went downhill after that"?

Pretty much everyone seems to agree that old FOP was great, and nobody fully agrees on where the series fell apart. It's Seasonal Rot for sure.

Does Sonic the Hedgehog 4 count for this trope? It was received okay at the time, but nowadays it’s hated by everyone, considered one of the worst Sonic games to be released.

It only appears Episode 1 got the treatment. It doesn't have the same infamy as Sonic Boom, Sonic 06, or Sonic Genesis though.

The YMMV for the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Paradise Syndrome" mentions that it used to be seen as a rare bright spot in Season 3, but is now considered yet another bad episode in a season full of them thanks in large part to sheer Values Dissonance. Would that make it a valid example of this?

Alright. What do you think of this write-up:

  • Star Trek: The Original Series: The episode "The Paradise Syndrome" was seen as a rare bright spot in the mostly disappointing Season 3 for a couple of decades after it aired, due in large part to Kirk, Spock and McCoy having interesting character beats and Miramanee's strong chemistry with Kirk. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to it, and as societal mores shifted, the inhabitants of Amerind being a gaggle of on-the-nose Native American stereotypes played painfully straight was viewed in an increasingly negative light, especially since Miramanee was played by a white actress in brownface. Other aspects of the episode have come under increasing criticism, such as Miramanee's intelligence and personality fluctuating, a clumsily-handled two-month Time Skip, and the episode's slow pace undermining the intended tension of Spock needing to make the right command decisions quickly. While it's generally not seen as particularly bad by third season standards, it's nevertheless now considered yet another bad episode in a season full of them, and an embarrassing relic of a less enlightened era to boot. These days, perhaps the only thing about this episode that remains popular are the mysterious Preservers.

Looks like that episode is already on the page. I'll still use it though since it looks better than the current writeup.

New addition

  • Astroturf had to be quickly invented after the grass died in the Astrodome. After that it became standard for all indoor stadiums and many outdoor facilities adopted it as a cheap alternative to taking care of a grass field. However it changed the way the game had to be played, especially baseball due to the ball moving much faster along the surface and much higher bounces. For football it was devastating to players knees and rugburns just became a normal part of life. Finally being heat absorbing it often led to unbearable temperatures on playing surfaces. The new generation of turf fields has been much better received and is now a standard surface at many colleges and High Schools, particularly in colder weather regions.

Consider that it got replaced by newer version instead of completely drop, I think it's more of Technology Marches On.

[up] I think it's valid considering a lot of discussion around original Astroturf concerns how dangerous it was and who could have possibly thought playing pro sports on what is essentially a carpet over concrete would be a good idea.

[up]I mean, they literally just took the less bad option of making astroturf, didn't they? People just tolerated it untill something better came along.
