All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

It would be helpful to see if there has been misuse, but I personally never saw it myself.

The page has 190 wicks and 38 of them are already on Trivia/ pages, which can be a sign that something should be officially classified as Trivia (it's come up in past threads that handled moves to Trivia), so I think it would be fine to make a thread without a wick check, since this is more about the definition than usage. Either way, this strikes me as background information because examples involve comparing the ratings of separate releases of the work, which is external to the work instead of being a trope.

So Theriocephalus had put Ritual Magic on hold until after November 12...and it's after November 12. Should I get their permission to remove the "please hold" text on the queue?

Where even is the OP and wick check for that one? I've done a quick search of the forums, the repair shop queue (including the page history - it was listed in June, but no OP was posted for it) and the "Related" page for "Ritual Magic", and found nothing.

Until next time...

[up]For the record, the markup no longer works. To italicize something, you now have to bookend the word/phrase with double apostrophes. ('')

Yeah, I noticed... it's a force of habit sometimes, especially when I've recently been typing up something on a different site that still uses that coding.

...wait, that markup ever worked on here? I've always used the apostrophe markup.

Okay, so I have my wick check for Damned by Faint Praise here. Please bear with me; this is detailed as I attempted to cover it the best I could. That being said any insight is appreciated and I also welcome assistance with determining whether this is a problem or if I'm reading into it too much (though I went over it dozens of times to make sure and made a lot of revisions and recategorizing).

Here is a quick rundown of the results:

  • The trope definition says it is about a form of insult/criticism (towards something of bad quality) that attempts to look like praise, but in reality just highlights the subject's flaw(s) in some way. E.g. saying a computer looks sleek as a primary point of praise: it looks like a compliment, but it actually means "it only looks nice; it doesn't work that great as a computer so it's still bad".
  • The wick check says that most of the examples are a mixture of "character dislikes something", "this comment or compliment is weird or bad", "a statement or action vaguely looks damning", wicks that are lacking in context and some form of sinkholing, without elaborating on the flaws that were supposed to be pointed out.
  • Further issue: other pages linking to it don't appear to describe it consistently, and the title is an idiom that has a differing definition according to online dictionaries.

Pretty minor suggestion and is about an index, but I feel like Nose Tropes should be Nose and Odor Tropes and should soft split/organized between "tropes about the appearance of a nose" and the "tropes about odor".

I feel like maybe we should give molokai198 at least a few more days to respond, and put their entry on hold if they don't respond. They were last online yesterday (they last posted not long before I paged them yesterday), meaning they might be online later today, so I'm just mentioning this since there have been cases of users who never responded.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I feel a lot of examples in "Feminist Fantasy" are misplaced. Half the examples feel more like "this movie stars a woman, and the user likes it so it's here."

I don't remember if it was in Trope Talk or Ask The Tropers, but a while back it was commented that Dawson Casting has begun to suffer from Trope Decay, as some examples were cases like a 24-year-old actress playing a 20-year-old character or a 70-year-old actor playing a 50-year-old character. Does anyone know what became of that?

As for "Feminist Fantasy", really my problem relies on the section of "animated films". Seems like a Disney fan just came and just blurted out why their favorite films are secretly super progressive or something. Some examples don't fit the "feminist" or "self insert fantasy" criteria at all. How is the Swan Princess or Turning Red feminist, just because they star women?

If the examples added are just "well, historically, women like them", then Lois Lane or the Romcom genre should also be added as well.

[up] "on the section of animated films" is very different from "half the examples". If it's just a few specific examples that don't fit, you can simply remove these with sufficient edit reason. If it appears to be more systematic, you'll need a wick check to argue with.
