One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

[up][up] There's also an obsession with heroes always having to act according to the logic of the 'best possible option' instead of acting the way a character would, but I attribute that to a greater obsession within nerd culture and Tv Tropes just catching the residuals of that because, well, the site's written by nerds.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

[up] I can see why that would be common in geek subculture. It may have something to do with a lack of emotional understanding of others, and not being able to read subtle cues. Or it may be that the works they watch aren't good enough at giving those cues.

It could also be that they are Genre Savvy enough to see the traps coming, and get annoyed at the characters even if their actions made sense in-universe.

But another thing is that audiences become a lot less patient with irrational decisions when they are convenient to the plot. Game of Thrones is helped a lot by having emotional reactions by leaders on all sides, and they often send the plot in an interesting direction instead of railroading it.

I've noticed that OTC can get very heated at times when it comes to certain topics. Sometime it results in people getting insulted.

Another thing I've noticed about this site is that a lot of people here love and/or write fanfiction.

[up] OTC is about the real world, it's inevitable for everyone to get passionate there. I'm more surprised at how much passions can flare everywhere else.

The focus on fanfiction is more remarkable. Our reviews are dominated by them, though most are short (annoying since most don't have trope pages, and reviews don't link back to fanfic recs pages). I guess this wiki has the sort of userbase interested in fanfiction: dedicated fans of popular works, between the literati who wouldn't notice it, and the polloi who don't have the patience to read it. Interested in shows that are open and episodic enough for amateurs to try, but cerebral enough to have concepts to explore.

You should have seen when we had the "It Just Bugs Me" subforum. The level of volatility requiring mod intervention there was more than all the other subforums combined.

It was so glorious. ಥ_ಥ

OTC does have issues of its own, which is why it has a mod or two whose main job is to specifically monitor it, but it is a vast improvement over IJBM's continuous flare-ups.

OTC overall has gotten better over the years. Especially with more control over thread creation. Keeping the chaos corralled and largely in check most threads don't get mod visits too often outside of the usual hot button topics.

I don't see too much issues in OTC? I mean I see people get into arguments but not with personal insults (unless the person is an obvious sockpuppet account). If anything I have seen way more hostile attitudes in the gaming, anime and manga, music, and western animation/cartoon forums. There is a couple of threads I don't bother going to in those subs anymore because I feel uncomfortable expressing my opinions or just thoughts related to the work.

I suspect thats mainly cause were all passionate nerds in some way.

Speaking of OTC, I've noticed the fastest way to end an argument for good is to tell someone to "take it to OTC", because one or more of the participants are too intimidated by that section to ever go there, so they just drop it.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

[up][up]Yeah I go into OTC sometimes but I'm one of those people who gets intimidated by it (not a good debater, me), so I don't stay long usually.

[up][up]That is very interesting. I wouldn't say everyone fits exactly (for example, Aveyond in real life probably falls between the groups), but it's a cool observation.

[up][up]Yeah, I guess Aveyond is like the red group too. :P

I have noticed that there are a lot of people on this site have been diagnosed or show symptoms (by showing I mean telling of some of the symptoms) of being on the autism spectrum.

My theory is that fandom tends to attract autistic people as a "special interest" to begin with. Combine that with a forum like these, and it allows you to make friends without worrying about physical signals.

Not to mention, in these sorts of places you're much more free to ramble on about whatever thing is interesting you for as long as you like, instead of having to try and make sure you're not boring your friends.

The Broken Base and Base Breaker tropes seem to usually get applied flimsily, or at least they run a high risk of it. Since there's no litmus test for whether or not a character counts as one pretty much all anyone has to do is go "hey, I don't like this character/feature, and I've talked to two other people who feel the same way, so I'll just extrapolate and say that the fanbase is split on them/it" even if the vast majority of a fanbase feels positively about them.

There was one fandom I was thinking of in particular about this, but I can't recall it at the moment.

I've noticed that the use of links in posts adds another layer to communication here. Highlighting one's sarcasm/sincerity/joking, pointing to a trope that sums up or clarifies what's being said, stuff like that. Even though it's technically possible to do that on other sites, you don't really see it elsewhere.
