Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

So we're kicking things off tonight with... another old PSA film reel about the dangers of COMMUNISM. Fun.

Then, at the top of the coming hour... She rules the wasteland!

I'm sad I'm gonna miss this one, but, OH, is it a favorite.

From the straight-to-video archives of the early 90's, we got a sci-fi action rehash combining elements of RoboCop and The Terminator with a laughably small fraction of those films' budgets. The "twist" on the premise here is that some fantastic corporation with state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology decides to use the bodies of hardened violent criminals to create cyborg super soldiers (which, I suppose, still makes about just as much sense as RoboCop's OCP using the bodies of dead cops). What can possibly go wrong?

Get set to revisit Cyborg Cop 2...

Hey, all! We're gonna be watching Cyborg Cop 2 in less than half an hour! But before that, we'll be watching some old video game program from the UK and "House Simulator"

Come join!

Now, we're really getting into the good stuff!

From producer Brian Yuzna, who can claim enjoys one of the greatest running track records in this coven (all but one of nearly a dozen movies that have his name attached as either producer, director, or writer have received a rating of [awesome][awesome][awesome] or higher), comes our much celebrated live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga The Guyver ([awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]), directed by effects make-up wizard Screaming Mad George and boasting one of the most INSANE ensemble casts we can conceive, featuring Mark Hamill, Jimmie Walker, Michael Berryman, Peter Spellos, the American Christopher Lee—David Gale, and surprise cameos from Linnea Quigley and Jeffrey Combs as "Dr. East" (Geddit??)!

Gonna be out 'til Friday, lots of rehearsals and shows to do. I found a treasure early this morn on HBO, though.

Ever wanted to see John Lithgow and Jesse Ventura duke it out in gladiatorial combat? No? Well, from Russell Mulcahy, director of Highlander, featuring Denzel Washington and Ice-T, here's Ricochet, for your pleasure. I have not been as entertained by a single movie since Life Is Beautiful. It is AMAZING.

[up]Duuuuuude, not only have we seen that movie (in just the past 12 months, no less), we rated it a perfect [awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome], and we will be rewatching it again very soon (Maybe I'll save it for when you're free on Friday)... You also may have missed that a younger "Daddy" Derek Savage is a featured film extra in the movie, too.

Anyway, come on 'round for the bloodthirsty mayhem and unholy carnage of... the driver safety film Red Asphalt II, plus a few old videos from Lowtax.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, get ready to revisit the total insanity that is The Guyver...

From one [awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome] to another... Tonight, we revisit one of our absolute favorite works of Italian gialli: Lucio Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling. Easily one of Fulci's finest movies, and, for a giallo film, the murder mystery is pretty solid and sensible, and doesn't make any surprising leaps in logic in revealing the killer or his motives (like so many other genre works tend to do).

I'm embedding the gypsy's sublime death scene at the hands of a lynch mob, only because the trailers show a lot more of the lovely Barbara Bouchet than what is likely allowed to be shared in a public forum, but seek that out, if you must.

This is a last-minute addition to our anniversary season.

Only on account of spotting Peter Spellos in The Guyver on Monday evening, I want to revisit his most memorable character: Orville Ketchum from Sorority House Massacre 2.

He's easily the only "good" thing about this movie, in so much as he's a decent enough actor to get absorbed in a character role. The rest of this movie, as some of you may remember, is so awful it verges on being completely unappealing. It's filmed like a 1980's David DeCoteau movie with less money and a principal all-female cast whose only prior history in front of a camera had to be in modeling or pornography; they definitely weren't hired for their acting.

As the official trailer for this movie isn't exactly SFW, here's a small sample of some of that bad acting (there is another "great" scene I'd love to showcase, but that clip is long gone from Youtube)...

Alright, we're rerunning one of our two favorite episodes of [Rip Torn's] Ghost Stories again.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, come and watch '"Sorority House Massacre 2'', or face the wrath of Orville Ketchum!

Hey everybody, it's me. I'm "Teeaype" on Synctube, and I'm making this post as a way to contact me and my brother (who on TV Tropes is JLPV and on Synctube is also "Jayelpeve") and for a suggestion.

Anyway, I saw in the list of past features that there wasn't a certain Olivia Newton-John/Electric Light Orchestra musical (album with plot?) that was done. So maybe after the anniversary event, we could watch and rate Xanadu at some point.

[up]You and I have complimenting avatars (Beck's appearance there is a direct reference to my Shatner image, sans cigarette). Never change it.

And it's true we've never watched Xanadu before, but we are no strangers to the depths of shockingly bad post-Saturday Night Fever disco movie musicals of 1980—principally The Apple and Can't Stop the Music, the latter film being so bad that it directly inspired the creation of the annual Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) just so somebody could call it the "Worst Movie of 1980." Appropriately enough, both of those titles received an    X    rating from us, and we initially watched them both in such quick succession that we held off on Xanadu just knowing those three movies form a most ungodly unholy trinity that no mortal should encounter.

Personally, I'm still waiting on a rogue cut of Xanadu that just runs the ending from 'Chosen Survivors' on an infinite loop.

This one's for you, Mystic!

Originally, I was planning on rerunning Gymkata tonight, but since Myst brought this one up the other day, I'll have this one ready for your return: Ricochet!

This movie's got everything! It's even got an appearances from both Ice-T and the creator of Cool Cat—"Daddy" Derek Savage. If that's not a sign of how insane a movie can get, I don't know what is.

The movie boils down to John Lithgow seeking vengeance against Denzel Washington for foiling a robbery by doing a distracting striptease, and Lithgow do anything to bring down his nemesis, even if it means escaping from prison and, yes, defeating Jessie Ventura in "gladiatorial combat."

Okay, I got a new video from cRiT1KaL and an old episode of Bad Influence to start us off.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, 80's action and suspense reaches its logical conclusion with 1991's Ricochet. First person to spot "Daddy" Derek Savage in the movie wins a balloon.

We got a big annual holiday tonight: Starcrash Saturday!

Seven years after we first laid eyes upon it, it still represents the aesthetic ideal of everything we seek out in a movie. Star Wars has got NOTHING on Luigi Cozzi's cheap knockoff. It certainly doesn't have David Hasselhoff fighting stop-motion robots with a light saber.

Okay, I'm starting us a little early just to give everybody a heads up that tonight's pre-show will feature DOOM HOUSE! Get here as soon as possible!

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we celebrate the incredible spectacle that is Luigi Cozzi's Star Wars knockoff Starcrash, with Carolin Munro, Marjoe Gortner, and David Hasselhoff!

They say cats have nine lives... YOU have only ONE...

Tonight, strap yourselves in for Greydon Clark's magnum opus about a killer mutant cat... that hides inside the body of another cat, which terrorizes the unlikely power trio of George Kennedy, Alex Cord, and Clu Gulager (who just made a surprise cameo in Tarantino's latest movie) and a handful of spring breakers on a luxury yacht.

It's the one and only Uninvited...
