Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

FiveManBand.Web Original has this, and I'm not sure if it qualifies. It's locked, so I can't edit it, but here it is.
The Hero | Cuddles |
The Lancer | Toothy, Flippy, and Flaky |
The Smart Guy | Sniffles and Handy |
The Big Guy | Lumpy, Nutty, Disco Bear, and The Mole |
The Chick | Giggles and Petunia |
Team Dad | Pop |
Tagalong Kid | Cub |
Token Evil Teammate | Fliqpy, Lifty, Shifty, and (possibly) Lammy |
"Kid"Appeal Character | Mime |
Sixth Ranger | Splendid and Russell |
Companion Cube | Mr.Pickles and Cro-Marmot(Literally!) |
11 roles split between 23 characters.
thats about as far away from Five as you can get.
That page has a ton of shoehorns. I've requested some cuts, including the entry mentioned two posts above.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?I don't know if this will help, but regarding the Toys/BIONICLE examples, I know that the Bara Magna example can be cut, but the others are pretty legit. However, Kiina does NOT fit the role of Big Guy, and Gresh can't be Chick since he's a dude.
I think that while The Chick is mostly female, a male can also fullfil the trope (or we use The Heart as the male counterpart?)
Watch me destroying my countryFair enough. But it at least ought to be changed, and honestly, the others are kind of shoehorned anyway (Kiina isn't the Big Guy at all, and Berix is debatable as the smart one). My vote is to just delete it.

I think that The-Guy-The-Heart thing only applies when the entire team is genderflipped; i.e. four girls and one guy.
The other Bionicle examples don't qualify due to having too many members.
Also, The Chick is Always Female.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? From the Fujiko Fujio page:
- Five-Man Band: The typical casting in many of their series. To enumerate:
- The Hero: In the form of a prepubescent protagonist.
- The Lancer: The character whose name is probably the title of the work as well, but there are exceptions.
- The Big Guy: Usually a bully.
- The Smart Guy
- The Chick: The protagonist's crush. It can be reversed.
- Sixth Ranger
Currently, six of Fujiko Fujio's works have pages. I checked those six pages, and from what I can tell, none of them list five-man bands. The works might have five-man bands, but I'm not sure right now (and if only a couple of their works have five-man bands, it should probably just be listed on those pages).

I posted this a while ago but forgot to bring it to the locked pages thread, I just want people to give their opinions on it again so i can bring it there.
- Thomas and his friends in The Death Cure
- The Leader: Thomas, The Hero of the story who is the unofficial leader of the team.
- The Lancer: Newt, Thomas' best friend and most trusted ally, who's much quieter and less level headed than Thomas.
- The Smart Guy: Jorge, Who's knowledge of WICKED and the outside world are invaluable to the group.
- The Big Guy: Minho, Thomas' other friend who's much stronger and aggressive than the rest of the group.
- The Chick: Brenda, Thomas' Love Interest who provides emotional support for him and usually is the one to break up arguments among the group.
I'm going to remove that.

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonThat seems perfectly valid to me. Are those descriptions of the characters not accurate?
Is that question for me specifically or a general question. If it's for me then yes they are.
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonThen I'd say it's a valid example.
How do you format a Five-Man Band in the way it's formatted on the subpages (with the boxes)

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonI started a TRS thread on Five Bad Band here
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonThe Chick is Always Female and that means it is female at least 90% of the time. I have only seen one example of a Five-Man Band I would consider a male character taking the role of The Chick so I feel no real loss to say that it is absolutely female.
could you post that example. Also is that 10% when the group is gender inverted?
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonI found this on a fanfic page, XCOM: RWBY Within.
I'm not at all familiar with the fanfic and only with one of the cross-over shows involved, however, the example raises red flags for me:
- Five-Man Band: The original main members of Strike Eight:
- The Leader: Ruby. Starting off as Headstrong and Charismatic, later combines all four types, inspiring the team and coming up with tactics.
- The Lancer: Weiss. In addition to their contrasting personalities, she takes the role of Assault, fighting in close range as opposed to Sniper-trained Ruby.
- The Big Gal: Yang. Thanks to Rocketeer training, she wields the biggest firepower on the team and is probably the most fight-happy of them.
- The Smart Guy: Vance. The only veteran member of the team, he helps girls in dealing with new reality and supports them from range in combat.
- The Chick: Blake. As a Scout, she specializes more in recon and support than direct combat.
The fact it's singled out as the 'original main members' suggests a rotating team of some kind. There four females and one male. The Chick seems to be added as that trope simply because she's not a direct combat specialist, which sounds like shoehorning.
Does anyone know this work?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. The example I had in mind was Recess. It has The Smart Girl and The Big Girl. Mikey is The Heart. He writes poetry, performs ballet, and believes in notions of peace that are often dismissed by the others. I don't think I've ever seen something that I would consider a Five-Man Band that was gender inverted or had more than two girls.
Except TJ's crew is made up of 6 and can't qualify anyway.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?yeah Gus joins in the first ep, so he isnt really a Sixth Ranger in the proper sense. He's New Meat.
I've been thinking that it may be a good idea to temporarily unlock the subpages of Five-Man Band just to remove the most blatant misuse. The point of the lock was to prevent people from adding more misused examples, but it also means that the misuse that's already there is there forever, meaning that someone who looks at these pages would get the wrong impression of what the trope is.
Either that, or have a mod do the editing. I'm not sure it's OK to go to the locked page edit request thread and drop such a big request all at once, which is why I'm bringing it up here instead.
Yeah - as I've mentioned previously in this cleanup effort, the subpages are full of blatantly shoehorned examples that have probably been there for 6 years or more and haven't been removed because of the page locks.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!
It's definitely misuse. For starters, there are six of them, not five, and one of the FMB rules is that its members may not be cherry picked from a larger ensemble. Also, not all the FMB roles are accounted for, and there's no hint of the required team dynamic.
Bigotry in the name of inclusion is still bigotry.
