Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

I think you meant Forever War, the other one doesn't have an RL. I think cutting it down to continual conflicts like the Thirty Years' War might be better.
I'm gonna just copypaste what I said in ATT regarding Master Race since we're taking the discussion here:
I am in favor of keeping RL examples for Master Race AND cutting the one about Judaism.
Real Life examples are meant to give a trope context and in the case of a trope like this one, named after a real life ideology, it's useful to contextualize the history of the term under Nazism and precursors that inspired Nazism.
So I'd limit it to RL examples where the term has been used irl and where historians agree it's appropriate.
yes i meant forever war. imo forever wars are a little too common and any conflict throughout history could be considered a forever war.
isn't master race a little too controversial? looking at it, it feels like a lot of political soapboxing.

Yes, it is. That's why I said that it should be limited to historical examples of that, to contextualize the concept and its role in Nazism.
The trope currently allows RL examples and accuses several countries of holding that mentality. I am in favor of cutting that.
I usually don't like the "historical examples" clause, but Master Race might benefit from it since we can properly analyze the impact of fascist movements after the fact.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I can understand why Master Race can benefit from historical examples, and I think the best way to keep it within ROCEJ boundaries is to make it No Recent Examples, Please! with a 50- or 70-year wait.
The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundI definitely agree with that.
The problem is many of these soap box examples don't actually fit the definition. Which requires an empire that wants world domination plus racist rhetoric. So alot of them need to be cut first (the Judaism one, the latin American one,)
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."If anyone wants to propose adding real life examples of Master Race to No Recent Examples, Please! instead of adding it to either No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only (or just cleaning up the Real Life section), post the proposal in the thread for that index.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I am proposing the addition of EnemyMine.Real Life to LRLEO with contemporary political examples being prohibited as some of them can violate ROCEJ, especially with comparing active politicians, as well as comparing some active political organizations.

Kirby is awesome. Why exactly does it even have real life examples? Isn't it a morality trope?
Edited by namra on May 1st 2024 at 9:05:20 AM
It is not. There isn't anything inherently moral about the concept of people being enemies.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Purenessif it doesn’t get cut, I’d be for a no recent examples rule.
x4 I'll make a post there.
EDIT: link to post in the NREP thread.

The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundI want to draw your attention to the awful Real Life section on the Chain of Corrections page, which includes jokes and suffers from Weblinks Are Not Examples and Examples Are Not General:
- Old joke here - three old men:
Old man #1: Windy, isn't it?
Old man #2: It's Thursday.
Old man #3: So am I, let's get something to drink. - And in the same spirit
Old man: Look at my new watch!
Young man: What kind is it?
Old man: About three-thirty. - An absolutely epic one from Facebook◊
- And then, there is this one from Tumblr
- Threads featuring these are very popular on Reddit and other social media, often taking the form of long strings of "That's not X, that's Y. X is [lengthy definition of a completely different word that sounds kinda like X]".
- Twitter users attempting to figure out what Rick and Morty is.
Don't forget that some of these weblinks require having an account to access those websites, making them slightly more difficult to verify.

Kirby is awesome.and Those memes are hilarious, but you’re probably both right.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! With the first two entries, I took the liberty of making a Jokes folder and moving them there, since it seems like a no-brainer.
why are we even wanting to cut IRL examples for having jokes? as the good doctor says, there is precedent for jokes having their own folders
hail, holy queen of the sea, you're whirling-in-rags, you're vast and you're sadReally 700 Years Old keeps attracting RL examples that are misuse. The trope is "someone is long lived for their species" and it keeps getting examples that are just "a long lived species". The only valid example is the koi fish one.

Sorry if this is the wrong place, but I'd like to bring up Monica Gilbey Bieber. The page has a folder explicitly troping them as a person; it's not as bad as it looks, because they played a character while writing Troll Fics, similar to the author of My Immortal. However a lot of it is troping the known real person. I would just like to ask for consensus to remove anything that isn't related to their played persona.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.I think we have a separate thread for cleaning up Creator/ pages that trope real people instead of their works. This thread is for cleaning up the Real Life sections of trope pages.
Edit: Found it.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. While it's not technically "real life", but I feel like the Web Original section of N-Word Privileges trope still has several real life "Averted" or "Defied" examples, like 4chan or the webforums made to dehumanize black people. Can I cut them?
Sounds like they're not examples, so cut away.
Crown Description:
Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:- Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
- The item have been on the crowne for a minimum of a week
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.
I believe Hopeless War at least be checked. Its real life section is pretty long and contains some questionable examples. I also feel that hopeless war is a little too common and subjective to be real life, since any war in history can be considered hopeless.
