I don't read fanfiction much, but I plundered the MLP FIM stuff a while back, and have seen at least three fanfics which manage to turn Equestria (which admittedly seems to be one of the easier sugar bowls to tip into the acid bath) into, as follows;

  • A magical nuclear wasteland straight from Fallout...

  • ...a fractured world where an Eldritch Abomination is set on erasing all life and the Mane 6 have been converted into the four horsemen off the apocalypse, an army of undead, and the Eldritch Abominations lieutenant ...

  • ...and finally, a land torn apart by a griffin invasion and, later, another Eldritch Abomination!

The Sugar Apocalypse is one of my favourite tropes, though I do think it takes a special kind of twisted thinking to turn MLP FIM into a scene straight from the pages of Revelations. With this in mind, what is the most spectacular fireball you've seen a Sugar Bowl go down in? Quality can be variable; the threads focus is on scale, audacity, and shift in tone from the original work.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

I absolutely love Fallout Equestria, and its side-fic Project Horizons just dials the apocalypse level Up To Eleven.

I've actually just started writing my own Sugar Apocalypse fic called A Still More Glorious Dawn Awaits.

This thread is mainly gonna be about MLP darkfics, isn't it?

I hope not, but then, I don't really read any fanfiction outside of MLP. I've contributed about as much as I can.

I was sort of hoping for something other than just My Little Pony. Come on, someone do The Smurfs or something. And not just that traumatising Belgian advert!

I dunno if this counts, but in my fanfic I ruthlessly killed Tsukasa, resulting in Kagami breaking down, turning into an Eldritch Abomination, and causing a planetary Class 3 Apocalypse, verging on Class 4.

How's that?

You turned Lucky Star into Shadow Star Narutaru? Wow, I don't know whether to applaud or run screaming.

[up]Close, but not quite. I crossed it over with Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Ok, destroying the happy-go-lucky world of Lucky Star with a school girl turned Eldritch Abomination... that's a pretty spectacular start.

I collaborated on a fanfic a long while back, and it started out decent enough, though already slightly Darker and Edgier. The fandom was Ben 10, not the fandom you would think would be one to spawn...this.

The Big Bad was at first pretty clear cut, being a magic using Emperor who took over a collection of small countries using a large amount of high tech minions and magical forces. The problems began when he died, and without telling anyone who he trusted to be his heir.

That was when the Enemy Civil War began and things quickly went to shit.

The sides in this are:

  • Zelana, the Sorceress, a banished Anodite who was working closely with Zahhak, a terrifying Hero Killer who, in his first appearance, strung six students up by their innards to summon some Legions of Hell. Zelana is no slouch either, brainwashing Ben into becoming her Black Knight / "bed warmer", and almost killing Gwen.
    • Zahhak himself is basically a Starscream / Dragon with an Agenda and is insanely spiteful toward human magic users. He is also none too kind toward aliens.

  • Aevon's Maskuerade, a group of "human ascendants", who seek to become more powerful by grafting alien parts on to themselves. He has made a deal with Zahhak's rival Vajrah, who is basically a Power Parasite and who has been slowly eating Aevon's remaining empathy to turn him into a Complete Monster.
    • Vajrah also has an agenda. It involves eating enough power to become the new King of Hell.

  • Aevon's nephew and Bastard Understudy Kincaid, who is working to usurp Aevon together with Vajrah. He is also manipulating Vajrah, and Vajrah...is manipulating him in return.

  • Aevon's Brute Zeke is actually much smarter than he looks and is manipulating Aevon to become more powerful, and is planning to assassinate Ben before the brainwashing inevitably wares off and is a double agent for Zelana, while trying to manipulate her.

  • Zelana's confidante / Evil Genius Mora is plotting to usurp Zelana eventually, while plotting to run away with Ben and take him "away from that undeserving witch."

  • Mahlak is the son of Zahhak, and is Not So Harmless, despite being "basically a Pretty Boy teenager for eternity". The author and I...never really could decide who he was really plotting against. He did see an ending of being relatively in one piece, more than we can say for these others.

  • Morpheus is a shapeshifting alien who is trying to infiltrate the operations of the above, first for the Plumbers, but he is quickly corrupted into acting for his own greedy reasons. Despite looking like he died in most encounters, he was always somewhat like a cockroach.

I cannot find the story, though it was on fanfiction.net, and all I could find were the notes, which I posted on here.

I intended for it to be rather dark, but...it managed to astound even me.

Hmm... looks like this thread might turn into "Post your Sugar Apocalypse!"

Not that I disapprove, mind. This looks to be interesting.

[up] What did you think of mine? My personal favorites were the MLP ones that I think Game Chainsaw posted.

I mean, some of those sound interesting...

I read a few of them now.

Wow. Wow, just wow.

Some people are truly zealous in turning such a peaceful little world into dystopia...
