YMMV / Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck

Go To

  • Broken Base: Who should've been chosen to host Whammy!: Todd Newton, or Peter Tomarken? There are those who feel that Todd Newton was a good fit for the show and did a decent job hosting, and there are those who feel no one but Tomarken should've been given the job and that Newton should've stayed as far away as possible from the show, among other viewpoints. Not helping is the fact that both hosts taped a pilot each, and Game Show Network went with Newton over Tomarken because he was younger.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In the David/Kelly/Brooke episode, Kelly had $12,920 while the other two contestants had $0. David had one spin in his earned column; rather than pass it to Kelly and hope she got a Whammy, he said "I can't kill her like that, I'm gonna give it a shot." He didn't get enough to catch up, of course, but it's not often you see a gracious action like that on a game show.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some people watch for the Whammies, just like the original series.
  • Memetic Mutation: The show's title spawned a Running Gag of coming up with new "X! The All-New Y" titles, such as Bankrupt! The All-New Wheel of Fortune.
  • Older Than They Think: Requiring two tokens to win a car? This was first done on High Rollers.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Voice actors (and married couple) Sandy Fox and Lex Lang both appeared on the show at one point; Fox actually did so well she made it to the season 2 tournament!
  • Sequel Difficulty Spike: Round 3 had 11 Whammies for most of the run, up from nine in Round 2 on Press and three Devils on Chance, plus the squares now each changed on their own instead of the whole board changing at once, never mind the "Larson-Proof" light pattern. For the record, there was no spike between Chance and Press, as both had the same chance of hitting the villain (3/18 = 9/54 = 1/6).
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • The Whammy parody of *NSYNC sings a parody of "Bye Bye Bye" ("You'd better cry, 'cause your money's gone bye bye bye!") but with a slightly different tune. (The pilot did use the actual song, but later changed it due to licensing issues.)
    • The Whammy parody of Britney Spears sings a slightly different parody of "Baby One More Time" ("I'll make all your dollars mine, kiss me where the sun don't shine"), complete with the schoolgirl uniform from Spears' music video.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Most hatred stems from the round board, the presence of Double Whammies (which merely dumped objects onto the contestant in addition to adding a Whammy), and the overemphasis on prizes (over 100 of which were worth less than $300). There was also the fact that two pilots were made, one with Peter Tomarken and the other with Newton, and that the latter was picked over the former.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: At least half of the Whammy animations are references to early 2000s pop culture. Some parodies have stood the test of time, such as the Whammy based off Harry Potternote , but Whammy gags based off George Foreman, Emeril Lagrasse, Ozzy Osbourne, *NSYNC, a pre-Creator Breakdown Britney Spears, the Enron scandal, and Verizon's "can you hear me now?" tagline (complete with an outdated cell phone) date the show squarely to 2002-2003.
