YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants S 3 E 12 "Chocolate with Nuts" / "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V"

Go To

Chocolate with Nuts:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: SpongeBob and Patrick dating the old lady and her mother. Is this them misunderstanding the point of giving themselves a good life, or do they like older women? Another episode, "Mid-Life Crustacean", reveals they were stealing panties from Mr. Krabs' mother, which gives some evidence pointing towards the second interpretation.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Blatantly lying to your customers in order to sell your product, including duping a frail old woman into thinking it'll be good for her health? Cruel and callous. Doing it in such an over-the-top way that you wonder how on Earth anyone believes it all at face value? Downright hilarious.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Identical Stranger that Patrick sells chocolate to is differentiated by a green shirt. Patrick would end up wearing a green shirt when he got his own Spin-Off, The Patrick Star Show.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "CHOOOOCOOOOOOLAAAAAATE!"Explanation
    • Patrick's facial expression when he says "I love you" has become a common usage for meme reactions.
    • "I was born with glass bones and paper skin."Explanation
  • Never Live It Down: Although Tom only acted crazy over chocolate in this one episode, it will probably always be the defining characteristic of this background character.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V:

  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: As a "demonstration" of his powers, Quickster asks to show off his Super-Speed by running to a mountain in the distance and back again... then offers to do so again, apparently not having moved from his original spot. Did he really stay in one place, or did he complete his run so quickly that it was impossible to actually see him do it?
  • Genius Bonus: Krakatoa is actually the name of a volcano in Indonesia, famous for its eruption in 1883. Its third explosion clocked in at 180 dB, probably the loudest sound in historic history, 36,417 died overall, and the temperature dropped to the point where most of the world didn't experience a summer (similar to Tambora).
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "Every Villain Is Lemons" ends up being pretty descriptive of the villains in Cars 2.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Every Villain Is LemonsExplanation
    • "Wanna see me run to that mountain and back? ...You wanna see me do it again?"Explanation
    • The scene of the fish making out with his pillow is often edited to include an anime girl making it into an official "dakimakura" or body pillow.
  • Spiritual Successor: The story of an elder superhero recruiting four civilians to become new versions of superheroes who get their powers from the costumes they wear sounds very similar to the short-lived Spider-Man spin-off, Slingers.
