YMMV / Kath & Kim

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The final episode for Series 3. There's occasional flashes into the future that reveal Kath's thighs have inflated, Kel is comically obese, Kim looks even skankier than she used to, Sharon has married Brett and Epponee Rae is played by Kylie Minogue (dressed exactly like her Neighbours counterpart on her wedding day).
  • Fanfic Fuel: Epponee Rae, due to being a baby with no set personality. In fanfics, Epponee Rae is occasionally played against Kim with a Wacky Parent, Serious Child dynamic.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: When Sharon's sister Karen visits Australia, she says she wants to snog Heath Ledger while she still can. Heath Ledger passed away less than a year later, making her sense of priority come off as eerily prophetic.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • When the family are playing Trivial Pursuit, one of the questions involves a Captain Underpants film. A little over a decade later and this became a reality.
    • Sharon's half-sister being played by homosexual Matt Lucas became ironic when Magda Szubanski came out after the series wrapped up.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: Averted with Kim in the original Australian version, in the U.S. version however, Kim was played by the fairly thin Selma Blair, so the show never attempted to pass her off as "fat" in any way.
  • Ho Yay: In series 1, Kath suspects that Kim and Sharon might be lesbians. Kel then tells Kath that he was in the Navy, which makes her wonder if she's just his beard.
    • MAD Magazine once did an article on Australian TV shows that were altered to be more "gay friendly". Kath & Kim was reimagined with the titular characters as secret lovers who passed themselves off as mother and daughter. Sharon was their occasional threesome buddy and when Brett and Kel discover what's going on, they admit to their own budding feelings towards each other.
      • The article even points out Kel's failed marriages, obsession with sausages and sensitive new age lifestyle as hints to his homosexuality. Hmmm...
  • Memetic Mutation: Several phrases, notably 'Look at moi' and 'It's noice...', have become this in Australian culture.
    • At some point in the 2010s, several bloggers started coming up with hypothetical scenarios of how Kath and Kim might respond to current trends.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Sandy trying to seduce Kath is treated as such by Kel. Kel's previous fiancees all left him for Sandy, but Kel moved on because they all left him willingly. Kath on the other hand was already married to Kel and she was clearly uncomfortable with Sandy's behaviour around her, convincing Kel once and for all that Sandy really is a terrible person.
  • Questionable Casting:
    • Matt Lucas as Sharon's sister Karen. Even for the series' brand of comedy, casting a man as a woman without drawing attention to it is a bit weird.
    • Selma Blair as American Kim left audiences scratching their heads, as Selma Blair's demure acting style wasn't considered a good fit for drama-queen Kim.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Kate McCartney from The Katering Show and Get Krack!n appears in series 3 as one of the women flirting with Brett.
  • The Scrappy: Brett's American expy Craig, who incessantly talks in a Totally Radical tone of voice.
  • Seasonal Rot: After switching from ABC to channel 7, a lot of audiences felt the series had overstayed its welcome, due to the characters not having any more milestones to pursue. By the time Kath and Kimderella came out, everyone had already written the series off.
  • Squick: The episode where Kath and Kel become nudists, particularly one moment where Kel bends over right in front of Kim and Brett.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Kylie and Dannii Bolton only showed up for one episode, despite being established as arch-enemies of both Kim and Sharon.
  • Values Resonance:
    • With toxic masculinity being a major topic of discussion from the 2010s onwards, Kel and Brett's depictions as sensitive new-age guys who still manage to be solid family men serves as a fairly appropriate standard.
    • After Kylie and Dannii Bolton slept with Brett while he was drunk, Kim accuses Brett of cheating on her while Kath shows far more sympathy. Nowadays there'd be no argument that Brett was raped, so it's even easier to see things from Kath's perspective
  • The Woobie:
    • Sharon. She waits on Kim hand and foot, but is only her second best friend (the first doesn't ever appear). Her love life is always doomed to fail. She has several allergies and she gets herself injured on a daily basis.
    • Brett. Imagine living with Kim for the rest of your life. Especially when she's pregnant and hormonal. Not to mention getting date-raped in one episode.
    • Kel. It can't be easy getting rejected by every woman you've ever fallen in love with only for them to leave you for your womanising "friend".
