YMMV / GRID Legends

Go To

  • Author's Saving Throw: The Rise of Ravenwest DLC made the game gain back some traction in the GRID community, as the DLC covers the origins of Ravenwest and the McKane's Start of Darkness, which unexpectedly provided a nostalgic throwback to the original GRID game and the first TOCA Race Driver. As such, it's agreed by many players that it is by far best DLC update of the game.
  • Awesome Music: Disappointed with the soundtrack from Autosport? Legends have got you covered with "Triple Razor" (a third rendition and Triumphant Reprise of "Razor's Edge"), "Grid Runner", "Electric", "Legendary" and "Meltdown". And for a sense of finality, "Off The Grid" (which is a Dark Reprise of GRID 2's theme song) is heard during the final showdown against Nathan McKane at New Year's Eve during a thunderstorm at Strada Alpina.
  • Continuity Lockout:
    • A few aspects of the plot of Legends's Driven to Glory storyline won't make sense to players who aren't familiar with the lore of the series, particularly the TOCA Race Driver games.
    • This gets taken up a notch in the Rise to Ravenwest DLC storyline. Fans of TOCA Race Driver by large were happy that it basically confirmed that TOCA's continuity is still canon within Legends (some Broad Strokes notwithstanding) as it takes a stroll through memory lane as the player gets to play as Ryan McKane once again (while showing how his nephew Nathan came to be), but people who just know the McKanes as the antagonists from Legends's Driven to Glory will probably be left scratching their heads as to why EA/Codemasters chose to make a DLC centered on the game's antagonists (and perhaps two of the most obnoxious villains in recent racing game history).
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: Some players find GRID Legends a bit too easy even set on Legend difficulty, thanks to its Fake Difficulty.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Valentin Manzi stood out among the characters to many players, thanks to his easygoing personality and his actor's performance helping showcase it. Apparently the game's makers realized this too at some point, since not only an ad for the game focuses on him, but he becomes the protagonist of the Classic Car-Nage and Winter Bash storyline.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Nathan McKane crosses it at the very beginning of Legends' story mode when he causes the massive accident in the mid-season Strada Alpina race - which causes Yume Tanaka to have to have her leg amputated - and doesn't take responsibility for it.
  • Retroactive Recognition: While Ncuti Gatwa, who portrayed Valentin Manzi, was already known at the time of the game's release for his role in Sex Education, he got an even bigger and major role after the game's release, when he was revealed that he's taking the mantle as the Fifteenth Doctor (and the first Black Doctor) of BBC's Doctor Who.
  • Spiritual Successor: Having a helmeted protagonist racing against a vainglorious rival racer who thinks they're not good enough in legal, sanctioned events, which also happened to be published by Electronic Arts? GRID Legends is basically Need for Speed: ProStreet if, instead of having a street art/music festival as a backdrop, it had a Formula 1: Drive to Survive-style docudrama.
  • So Okay, It's Average: While not finding the game bad overall, some found the game's story mode to be too linear, very predictable and easily-forgettable, having stale and generic stereotypical characters.
  • That One Achievement: GRID Legends becomes more like "Grind Legends" for these types of achievements: note
    • "I Played So Much GT1" requires you to unlock all 3 upgraded tiers for every single GT Class 1 car. note  Unlocking Tier 3 upgrades require you to drive at least 80 km/50 miles for each car.
    • Taken a step further for "Passione Rossa" requiring you to own all Ferrari cars at launch and each having unlocked Tier 3 upgrades. There are 9 Ferrari launch carsnote  and this achievement can only be unlocked if you are willing to spend hours of grind and tedium.
    • The Rise of Ravenwest major update adds "Johnny would be pleased", which requires you to set a lap time of 1:03 at the San Francisco Short Circuit using a Plymouth GTX. Even with maxed out (stage 2) upgrades and with the right tuning, it is still a frustration to players in beating the target time due to the said car being prone to oversteering.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some players weren't keen with the changes of the game in comparison to previous GRID games:
    • The Audi R8 1:1, Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR and the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 require a pre-order to obtain them, whereas the previous 2019 has them already available in the base game.
    • The game removes Hot Lap Qualifying, where it gives players a chance to get an early lead, and also giving the option for multi-rounds in the Race Creator, due to each race created being just only a single race. Subverted for the 3.3 update as it fixed the latter complaint.
    • Many players aren't happy with Classic Car-Nage due to Demolition Derby itself (being more Wreckfest-style) not being fit for a GRID game, whereas few didn't like the choice of cars (being 100% fictional). Not to mention the game itself having poor damage model, so it it impossible to see these "demolition derby" cars crumple on impact, which somewhat renders the major update as seemingly meaningless.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: While the idea of having a Formula 1: Drive to Survive-style story added in Legends seemed interesting, some reviewers and fans criticized it for a myriad of reasons: The plot being way too linear, very predictable and easily-forgettable, having stale and generic stereotypical characters (with the exception of Valentin Manzi and the McKanes in the Rise of Ravenwest, which stood out among the cast by some reviewers and players), and the player being a total nonfactor due to its Gameplay and Story Segregation.
