YMMV / Doctor Who S29 E11 "Utopia"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Doctor's joyful speech about the indomitable spirit of humanity feels pretty awkward come "Last of the Time Lords", which revealed that in face of the end of the universe once Utopia turned out to be a lie, humanity chose to cannibalize themselves into Psychopathic Manchildren who willingly aid the Master in slaughtering their own ancestors For the Evulz.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Master is furious at having been fatally wounded by a female. Not only would the incarnation after the next be female, but she'd also be the one to fatally wound his next incarnation!
  • Narm: Jack Harkness clinging on to the TARDIS. How far the TARDIS was going, he probably should've dropped off before they arrived and gotten dropped somewhere else. Heroic Willpower only goes so far when going through something that can reduce you to crispy barbecue. Not to mention having someone desperately (and hammily) cling to the side of a moving vehicle while screaming at the driver looks silly when the vehicle in question is a car, much less a ship that moves through time and space. That also looks like some 1960s phone booth.
  • Narm Charm: The idea that humanity will exist in the same form, complete with normal looking trucks, technology and guns, in the year 100 trillion may strain credulity for some, but it sets up the theme of humanity's survivability for the rest of the three-parter and gives us the Doctor's gleeful "Indomitable!" speech so it's not all bad. The Doctor also lampshades how humanity had evolved into other forms before reverting to this they look now.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Derek Jacobi is only actually onscreen as the Master for one scene (before then, he's portraying kindly, old Professor Yana), and he steals the whole episode. Jacobi made such an impression (and had so much fun) he agreed to come back as the Master for Big Finish Doctor Who and has been doing it regularly ever since.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Many felt that Derek Jacobi's Master should have lasted longer. Thankfully, Big Finish obliged. Unfortunately, we still never got to see his Master face off with David Tennant's Doctor in person.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: In an impressive triple, the TARDIS Wikia, the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, and This Very Wiki have all at one time or another had entries or articles calling Creet “the little girl” and assuming that John Bell must be a Stage Name for a Jasmine Bell. Even Freema Agyeman mistook Bell for a girl due to his long hair when they first met.
