YMMV / Bone Tomahawk

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: After the Troglodytes spent all of the final act being as monstrous and sadistic as possible, seeing them get their just dues is immensely satisfying.
  • Cult Classic: Despite being rather overlooked thanks to its original yet (to some people) bizarre Genre Mashup and for portraying arguably one of the most disturbing horror movie kill scenes yet, not many people were willing to give it a try. Nonetheless, the movie has a loyal fanbase thanks to its talented cast, interesting characters, and excellent cinematic substance overall.
  • Fridge Horror: The troglodyte women are doomed to slow deaths of hunger and thirst now that all the men are dead and have no one else to keep them alive. Although considering the horrific situation they're in, death may be a blessing.
  • Narm: For some people, the sheer amount of Gorn in this film is so over-the-top that it comes off as juvenile and becomes more hilarious than horrific.
  • Nausea Fuel: The scalping/bisection scene could be compared with stuff like Crossed or Cannibal Holocaust. The victim's scalp is peeled back, stuffed into his mouth, and then he's held upside down with his legs apart, hit in the groin to carve him up, letting the Troglodytes pull him apart until his guts spill out onto the ground. A Cruel and Unusual Death at its finest.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • Sid Haig as a bandit in the opening scene.
    • Zahn McClarnon as the Professor, who the main characters consult about the Troglodytes' attacks.
  • Signature Scene: You will turn off this movie praying that you could unwatch the scene described above. When discussing the movie, it's almost exclusively referred to as simply "THAT scene."
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: It takes roughly an hour for Sheriff Hunt and his posse to make their way out of Bright Hope, with all the time instead spent introducing and developing the cast. Even the movie's most infamous scene mentioned above doesn't occur until the last forty minutes.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The film has been compared to Blood Meridian, for its Wild West setting and its excessive, gory scenes.
  • Tear Jerker: Sheriff Hunt's final words to Chicory.
Hunt: Say goodbye to my wife. I'll say hello to yours.
