Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 is a Fan Sequel to the popular Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series, specifically a Game Mod of the third installment, created by Team BT4. The mod's biggest draw is the addition of multiple characters from Dragon Ball's Super era.

The game can be found on Team BT4's website. Not to be confused with Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, the official continuation to the original Budokai Tenkaichi trilogy.

Examples:

  • Adaptation Expansion: Dragon History now features a saga based on the events of the Super anime, up to the end of the Tournament of Power.
  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • Meta-Cooler is now "Metal Cooler", reflecting more recent translations from Xenoverse 2 onwards.
    • Kale and DBS Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan forms are usually distinguished as "Berserker" and "Super Saiyan Full Power", respectfully, in official media. Here, they both use the "Legendary" term usually associated with DBZ Broly.
    • The inaccurately titled General Tao now goes by his original name, Tao Pai Pai.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the original games, Super Saiyan 2 Goku had an ordinary Kamehameha as a Blast 2 and the Super Kamehameha as his Ultimate Blast. Here, he has the Super Kamehameha as a Blast 2 like the other normal Super Saiyan forms.
  • Art Evolution:
    • Adult Gohan is now based on his appearance from Super, without the drooping bang (unless he's in his Ultimate or Beast forms, or if he's wearing Piccolo's gi).
    • Metal Cooler's textures have been significantly upgraded, making him look much more reflective.
  • The Cameo: Some fighters have other characters for costumes, such as Frost for Frieza, GT Trunks for Future Trunks (the swordless variant) and Saonel for Nail.
  • Composite Character:
    • Perfect Cell has been turned into a composite of Perfect and Super Perfect Cell (who only appears as a costume in this mod).
    • Ultimate Gohan now appears as a transformation for adult Gohan, rather than having his own character slot like in the original games.
    • Frieza Solder has Cui and Appule as alternate costumes, while using Cui's moveset.
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • The original Super Gogeta is relegated to a costume of his Super counterpart, who as treated as the "default" Gogeta in this game.
    • Cui and Appule, who had their own character slots in the original game, are relegated to costumes for the generic Frieza Soldier character (though it's downplayed in Cui's case since he's the primary costume and Frieza Soldier's moveset is based on his own).
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The English version's title theme is derived from (and named after) Buyuu Retsuden, a Dragon Ball Z fighting game for the Mega Drive.
    • Super Saiyan 2 Goku's Ultimate Blast is the Meteor Crash, Super Saiyan Goku's level 3 super from Dragon Ball Fighterz.
    • Metal Cooler, as he appears in the original Tenkaichi games, can be selected as a costume for Fourth Form Cooler. His Fifth Form also has Golden Cooler as a costume.
  • Recycled Animation: Some new characters' Blast 2/Ultimate Blast animations are taken from animations from the original games, like Goku Black's Divine Lasso being identical to Vegito's Spirit Sword.
  • Setting Update:
    • The Ultimate Battle mode is now called "Time Nest", being based on the Dragon Ball Xenoverse games.
    • The Yamcha Games game mode has been replaced with the Tournament of Power, which acts as a more difficult alternative to the Other World Tournament.
  • Shout-Out: A few Parallel Quests are references to Dragon Ball Z Abridged, like "Bottom of Pecking Order" and "Team Three-Star".
  • Vocal Evolution: Zigzagged. Some characters have new voice lines (like Frieza having Chris Ayres' voice instead of Linda Young's, or Piccolo using Christopher Sabat's voice clips from post-Kai games), but others keep their original voices (like kid and teen Gohan using keeping Stephanie Nadolny's voice instead of switching to Colleen Clinkenbeard's).
