Tropers / Existential Tempest

Hi! This page now contains stuff.

Tropes (and other things) that (arguably) describe me:

  • Antiquated Linguistics: One may on occasion observe a hint of this in my mode of speech.
  • Asperger's Syndrome: Of a relatively mild form. I consider it an overall advantage.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: A quality that I aspire to!
  • Blithe Spirit: The 'Tempest' part of my username. I've developed something of a habit of leaping headlong into online communities and rapidly ascending to prominence through sheer energy and eagerness while remaining totally willing to stand up for what I personally believe to be right, regardless of what that previous community had in mind beforehand. Results vary.
  • Ditzy Genius: I am known for devoting masses of time to building overcomplicated plans that have a tendency to fall apart due to a variable that I either hadn't considered or didn't even know existed in the first place. On the other hand, they can be quite good when that doesn't happen or when other people are there to correct me during the construction!
  • Existentialism: In case you couldn't tell by the name...
  • Fandom Heresy: Virgil's Aeneid is better than Homer's works and profoundly evolves the themes of each, even if it is derivative. The Last Jedi's philosophical ideas are interesting and make some sense, even if the space combat doesn't. Rex's scream not only isn't terrible but actually speaks to his character and that character's arc even if its actual auditory content no doubt wasn't the director's intention.
  • For Happiness: My guiding ideal, specifically of the eudaimonic variety.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: I aim to be so...
  • Knight Templar: I worry about becoming this out of a suspicion that utilitarians such as myself often fall into the trap of post-rationalising actions that actually do have overall negative consequences (rather than having negative consequences that are outweighed by the positive consequences) as being necessary for the greater good.
  • Lawful Good: The 'law' is of the self-imposed variety (I am, for example, trying to construct/assimilate an ideology at the moment); the 'good' is, of course, subjective.
  • No Social Skills: At least partially down to my Asperger's, though I have got - and am getting - better, as far as I can tell.
  • Rousing Speech: A favoured tactic of mine. It sometimes works!
  • Rules Lawyer: My tendency to invest large amounts of time into things that interest me means that I almost always Read the Fine Print and am more than willing to draw as much creative potential out of it as possible. That said, I do acknowledge Rule Zero; indeed, should I have the presence of mind to suspect that I'm reading the rules as written rather than as intended, the first thing I'll do is check with the GM. On the other hand, the frequency with which I do so might get annoying depending on said GM...
  • Serial Tweaker: Combine perfectionist and impulsive tendencies and you get this!
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: If a paragraph apparently written by me doesn't contain multiple attempts to create unnecessary nuance and at least one semicolon, there is good reason to doubt that I wrote it.
  • Smart People Know Latin: Downplayed; I took it as a GCSE and can make an educated guess at the meaning of a given Pretentious Latin Motto. I mean to properly go back to it at some point in the future, even if foreign languages aren't my intellectual forte.
  • Take a Third Option: Another favoured tactic, to the point that I've put it in my signature! (The last bit is a reminder to myself that this tactic isn't the answer to everything. It does solve most things, just not all things.)
  • The Pollyanna: Invoked whenever I can. My sense of humour can get quite cynical but, when being serious, my view is that the world that we live in is what we have to work with - and we are more than capable of shaping it as we wish, so long as we do so together. If I can help to do that or, even better, inspire it, then I will.
  • The Power of Friendship: A core part of my view of the world, specifically in the form of 'The Power of Friendship Between Significantly Different People/Cultures'.
  • The World Is Just Awesome: Oh, yes. You will not uncommonly find me staring at anything from a square centimetre of pavement to the night sky, no matter how uninteresting it may seem. Should that happen, know that I am devoting all my powers of analysis to it, drawing out as much meaning as I possibly can and loving every moment.
