  • Breakaway Pop Hit: New Order's "Here to Stay", written for the film, peaked at No. 15 on the UK Singles chart despite its lack of marketing outside a music video featuring the film's cast, and is generally remembered on its own merits— often considered one of the band's best post-Republic singles— rather than as an element of the movie. The film, meanwhile, has fallen into obscurity outside of Joy Division and New Order fans, in part due to the 2007 Ian Curtis biopic Control eclipsing it.
  • Deleted Role: Footage was shot featuring The Stone Roses as characters, but this was never used. Guitarist John Squire claims the filmmakers "sent me a release form so I could authorise my scenes, but I didn't bother. Which is probably why we didn't appear in it at all."
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: Michael Winterbottom actively encouraged Steve Coogan to improvise in his portrayal of Tony Wilson. This was quite easy for Coogan who had actually worked with Wilson in the past.
  • Production Posse: Steve Coogan would go on (as of 2015) to appear in four more Michael Winterbottom films, A Cock and Bull Story, The Trip, The Look Of Love, and The Trip To Italy. Shirley Henderson (who plays Tony Wilson's wife) had appeared previously in Wonderland and The Claim, and would later appear in Shandy, Everyday, and The Look Of Love. Rob Brydon (who appears briefly as a journalist interviewing Tony) would go on to appear in A Cock and Bull Story, The Trip, and The Trip To Italy.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Morrissey forbade the use of The Smiths' music in the film due to a dispute with both Tony Wilson and Factory Records that extended back to the band's early days, when they caught the interest of Wilson but were turned down because he didn't like the quality of the demos they sent to Factory.
