Trivia / T2 Trainspotting

  • Acting for Two: Robert Carlyle also plays Begbie's father in a flashback.
  • Channel Hop: Went from Polygram in the UK and Miramax (now with Paramount) in the US to TriStar Pictures worldwide.
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Many Flashback scenes were cut from the final cut of the movie. These included more scenes of young Sick Boy and Renton as seen in the movie. They also included John Bell as a young Spud, with actors Conor Mullen and Jack Gray as a young Begbie.
    • We see how Renton was able to track down where Spud was and more of Spud's recovery.
    • More scenes with Gail from the day Shirley Henderson got her voice back.
    • A Chekhov's Gunman appearance of Begbie's son as the clerk at the hotel Sick Boy and Veronika are staying at.
    • Begbie holding his lawyer prisoner in his own house as revenge for his failure to win parole, Begbie being taken to meet his lawyer at the beginning of the film, Begbie watching Supercasino and more of Begbie trying to have sex with his wife.
    • Sick Boy taking a call from Begbie and hiding from Renton in the process.
    • Renton staying at Dianne's flat briefly (sleeping on the couch as he does in the first film) and her telling him as she prepares dinner that there was never any real chance the two could have had a relationship at the time of the first film.
    • In another Call-Back to the first film, Renton and Spud stealing an iPad from the Apple Store and running away with it in the street all the way back to Leith, only for no one to give chase.
  • Doing It for the Art: Although this sequel had a substantially bigger budget than its low-budget predecessor, the director and cast all took an equal but lower salary than they were offered, to keep things in perspective. They were offered a share in prospective profits, though.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Robert Carlyle had shoulder-length hair when the film was put in production. He cut it short and grew a goatee for Begbie. As a result, his haircut was written into Once Upon a Time Season 6.
  • Late Export for You: Justified as it is from England, but America had to wait for two months for this to come to the US, and only a few hundred theaters got the film at all.
  • Method Acting: Robert Carlyle kept away from his family in Glasgow while filming because he became so much like Begbie.
  • Sequel Gap: The second film is set twenty years after the first.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The film was planned to be a straight up adaptation of Porno, before eventually turning into an original continuation.
    • Gail was supposed to have more lines, but Shirley Henderson lost her voice. Her one line "I think I've thought of a title.", after reading Spud's stories was shot 2 weeks after the rest of it had been filmed.
  • Word of Gay: Robert Carlyle confirmed that Begbie is an Armored Closet Gay. This is heavily hinted at through the fact that he cannot get an erection while having sex with his wife.
    • Although it does bear mentioning that this isn't the only valid interpretation regarding his impotence. Some people simply struggle to adjust back to normality after a long stint in prison. And it's safe to say that Begbie is turned on by violence and the chase, more so than having a definite preference for either gender.
    • He's also been a heavy smoker and drinker for most of his forty-odd years of life, a very common real-world recipe for impotence.
