Novel
- Died During Production: Irène Némirovsky never got to finish the novel she started in 1941, because in 1942 she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, since she was Jewish. This very novel wouldn't even have seen the light if it hadn't been saved in a suitcase which was kept by Némirovsky's daughters, who escaped death.
Film
- Fake Nationality:
- Michelle Williams (American), Margot Robbie (Australian), Ruth Wilson (British), Sam Riley (British), Alexandra Maria Lara (Romanian-German) all play French people. As for the British-born Kristin Scott Thomas, it might not count since she's lived in France since she was 19 and obtained citizenship.
- Belgian Matthias Schoenaerts as the German Bruno von Falk.
- Irony as She Is Cast: Alexandra Maria Lara as a French mother who fears German occupiers. She's German in Real Life (albeit Romanian-born).
- Playing Against Type: While this is another of Tom Schilling's roles as a German military man serving the Third Reich during WWII, Schilling here plays a despicable Those Wacky Nazis type in stark contrast to his past roles in Before the Fall and Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter.
