- All-Star Cast: This has one of the strongest casts for a Hollywood studio film of its era, with Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfuss and Rob Reiner, for starters. There's also Retroactive Recognition for Annette Bening and Oliver Platt in smaller roles.
- Cast the Expert: At the time, Harry Connick Jr. was still best known for his music, and he plays the piano player accompanying both Suzanne and Doris at Suzanne's welcome-home party.
- The Danza: Simon Callow as Simon Asquith.
- Deleted Role: Jerry Orbach was cast as Suzanne's father and filmed a scene, but it was cut from the final film.
- Starring a Star as a Star: Shirley MacLaine plays legendary singer-actress Doris Mann, and Meryl Streep plays her troubled daughter Suzanne Vale, a famous actress in her own right.
- Underage Casting: Shirley MacLaine plays the mother of Meryl Streep despite being just 15 years older than her.
- What Could Have Been: Carrie Fisher wanted her mother Debbie Reynolds to play Doris, who was based on Reynolds to begin with, and Reynolds auditioned, but Mike Nichols decided she wasn't right for the part.
