Promoted Fanboy: They were big fans of Steve Albini and his work long before working with him themselves on 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.
The film:
Actor-Inspired Element: Rose McGowan already had a tattoo and the filmmakers initially planned to cover it up, but ultimately left it in to give Courtney more of an edge.
Billing Displacement: Although all three on the poster are major characters, Judy Greer is not on it, despite arguably being the protagonist as well as the narrator, and being more important than Julie Benz.
Creator Killer: Darren Stein's directing career was badly impacted, after this film failed in its initial release with a negative reception and box office performance. Though it was reevaluated more positively recently, he since has found it difficult getting a project made. Stein's last directed a film in 2013 with G.B.F.
Dawson Casting: The four female main characters were well in their twenties when filming took place. This was intentionally done by the Director as an homage to films like Grease and Carrie (1976) where teens are played by actors who are clearly far too old.
Enforced Method Acting: For the scene where Courtney slams Vylette against the bathroom mirror, Darren Stein told Judy Greer to blow smoke in Rose McGowan's face. Rose didn't know this would happen, and so the bit where she takes the cigarette away from Judy and tosses it on the floor was improvised (as she didn't like the smoke).
Mid-Development Genre Shift: Darren Stein initially wrote this to be a horror film, but then he realized halfway through that what he was writing was a dark comedy.
Courtney's metallic hair bands at the prom came about because Rose McGowan saw Rebecca Gayheart leaving the hair and makeup trailer with her hair done in flowers, and that provoked her competitive streak. She supposedly went in and demanded that she have a more impressive hairstyle.
Rose also hated the "life's a bitch, then you die" line and tried to get it cut. When she was ordered to say it, she delivered it with Dull Surprise in the hopes they wouldn't use it. Her blase delivery ended up making the line more famous.
