- All-Star Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson and Benjamin Walker are all quite well-known. Tom Holland had also become well-known in the months leading up to the release after he was cast as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
- Box Office Bomb: It only made $93 million worldwide, on a budget of $100 million. It has been speculated that it did so poorly, because it came out the week before The Force Awakens in an attempt to get in on the award season, which it failed to do.
- Dawson Casting: 60-year-old Brendan Gleeson plays 44-year-old Thomas Nickerson. A fairly justified example, despite the great age difference between character and actor, due to Nickerson aging prematurely due to stress from the trauma he has lived much of his life with.
- Dyeing for Your Art: The entire cast had to lose weight, going on starvation diets, to portray emaciated shipwreck survivors. Chris Hemsworth then had to bulk back up to play Thor again.
- Fake American: Lots and lots. Pretty much the entire cast with one of the notable exceptions being Benjamin Walker.
- Saved from Development Hell: The film was in development back in 2000, with Barry Levinson set to direct for Miramax.
- What Could Have Been: Henry Cavill, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston were considered for Captain George Pollard.
