Trivia / Doctor Who S30 E10 "Midnight"

Go To

  • Completely Different Title: The French title is "Un passager de trop" (One Passenger Too Many).
  • Inspiration for the Work: Russell T Davies has stated that the episode was inspired by the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Darmok". Davies would later admit he had never actually seen it but was intrigued by the idea of an alien that communicated in a completely different way. He also took inspiration from Jeepers Creepers 2, where a basketball team was trapped in a school bus with an ancient monster, which happened to air on television while he was developing his storyline.
  • The Other Marty: David Troughton was a late replacement for Sam Kelly, who broke his leg and had to withdraw from the production.
  • Out of Order: "Midnight" was written and meant to air before "Silence in the Library", but producer Phil Colinson told Davies during production that airing "Forest of the Dead" and "Turn Left" back to back would feel like the same plot with Donna being recycled, so this and the two-parter were subsequently switched to create a buffer between the two episodes with a "Donna lives out a separate life in an alternate world" plot. This is why production codes and The Writer's Tale refer to Midnight as the eighth episode rather than the tenth.
  • So My Kids Can Watch: Daniel Ryan, who played the father Biff, said he was asked by Russell T. Davies for a role back in 2006, and went through with it because he wanted his children to see him acting in a show appropriate for them.
  • Word of God: Russell T Davies had several explanations about the monster.
    • Sky Silvestry was planning to kill herself once she reached the waterfall.
    • Killing the monster was the only thing they could do, the stewardess was right the entire time but it was motivated by fear.
  • Working Title: Crusader 5 and Crusader 50. The second title was meant to be a nod as a Milestone Celebration to being the 50th episode of the revived series, but had to be dropped since it wouldn't make sense after this episode and the "Silence in the Library" two-parter swapped places in episode order.
  • You Look Familiar: David Troughton, son of Second Doctor actor Patrick Troughton, who had played a guard in "The Enemy of the World", Private Moor in "The War Games" and the eponymous monarch in "The Curse of Peladon", makes a guest appearance as Prof. Hobbes.
