Shout Out / Shattered Skies: The Morning Lights

Go To

Besides multiple references to events from its five component series, Shattered Skies: The Morning Lights features a great many shout-outs to other works...

  • There are nods and allusions to Les Misérables throughout the story. It's the source of Fantine's code name, most notably. The chapter titles in Act 3 (save for the special ones and "Inter-Mission") are either taken from or references to lines or songs from the musical.
  • Via Word of God, Joker's cruelty and insanity draws from Kefka Palazzo and Hazama/Yuuki Terumi.
  • The Time Reaper's appearance in Nanairogaoka is taken from The Bible, specifically the Horseman of Death in the Book of Revelations.
  • Fantine sings "La Vie en Rose" in the original French to guide the Big Five to the Crossroads.
  • Yuuno and Umino discuss sci-fi and teleportation mechanics, and during their conversation Umino recommends the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. Via Word of God, Diane Duane herself helped clarify exactly how the worldgating in that series works, via her Tumblr.
  • When discussing code names for the rescue team's operation, Umino blurts out "Operation Batman", since "you're going to beat up a guy named Joker." It sticks. Word of God is that this name was suggested as a joke, but it was "too good not to use."
  • Kero knows what a shoryuken is. Sakura doesn't.
  • Jamanen's upgraded form draws from some of the most threatening Blob Monsters in fiction, namely the T-1000, Majin Buu, and Arakune. Her method of assimilating Cure Fortune is taken directly from a notorious scene of Inque trying to drown Terry in herself, from an episode of Batman Beyond.
  • Yayoi and Yui share their first kiss while watching Jenny and Lynn's Big Damn Kiss moment from Bodacious Space Pirates.
  • Kanna/Bad End Peace II is a Deadpool-esque fountain of references, dropping shout-outs to Pokémon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, "Sunrise mecha anime", and in one instance, BHS's previous crossover fanfic, Stars Above!
  • Yayoi takes out Kanna with her own, electrified variant of a Rider Kick. Her callsign is "Hongo", after the original, and her AMP Device, the "Miracle Driver", is named in the style of the Heisei-era henshin belts and looks like Ichigo's Typhoon.
  • The description "The Entity" that Joker unleashes on Vertex Three brings to mind the Time Devourer from Chrono Cross, and with good reason
