Recap / X Men Evolution S 2 E 10 Walk On The Wild Side

Go To

The female X-Men are fed up with playing second fiddle, and form a vigilante crime-fighting group called the Bayville Sirens.

Tropes included:

  • Amazon Brigade: The Bayville Sirens.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The initial trio of Tabitha (blonde), Amara (brunette) and Jean (redhead).
  • Clark Kenting: The girls are able to disguise themselves as the Sirens just with Cool Shades and wearing their hair differently. Scott doesn't even suspect it's them until he hears a rumor about the Sirens having special powers.
  • Compressed Vice: Jean feeling discriminated against or undermined because of her gender only shows up in this episode; she has frequently been put in charge and treated as a responsible authority figure by Xavier before, and the rest of the team have shown respect for her most of the time. And with Storm as a prominent authority figure too, the X-Men have shown no problem deferring to a woman. As a result, Jean's frustrations at being treated "like the weaker sex" appear in this episode and vanish afterwards.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The first episode to give Amara a significant role.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Tabitha invading Toad's privacy while he's in the shower, shaving Blob's hair while he's asleep and stealing Lance's car are played for comedy. In an episode with an anti-sexism message!
  • Females Are More Innocent: All the criminals that the Sirens target are male.
  • Foreshadowing: Tabitha/Boom Boom happily forming a crime-fighting group with the X-girls foreshadows that she'll eventually ditch the Brotherhood and become a Wild Card ally for the X-Men.
  • Gag Haircut: Blob wakes up having had all his hair shaved off.
  • Girl's Night Out Episode: The episode puts emphasis on the girls' antics.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: The Sirens' costumes are all black leather with Cool Shades.
  • Informed Flaw: The alleged sexism faced by Jean. As mentioned above, this episode is the only time that it's ever even implied that anyone thinks less of her on account of her gender. The idea that Scott, of all people, has a chauvinistic attitude towards her is particularly strange, as he's never been shown to have anything less than respect for her.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: Kitty wears her hair down in her Bayville Sirens costume. It distinguishes her from her X-costume, where she still wore it up in a ponytail.
  • Lipstick-and-Load Montage: When the X-Girls plus Boom Boom are doing a strange rock music video montage that consists of applying makeup, shopping, dancing and then changing into some new leather costumes to do vigilante crime fighting.

  • Shout-Out:
    • During the "Don't Mess With My Kind" montage, Tabitha can be seen doing a dance from Never Been Kissed. Shortly after that, Jean and Amara do one from Coyote Ugly.
    • After the above montage, there's a sequence of the girls confidently walking down the school hallway. Kitty then blows a kiss to an unseen person on the left. This is a recreation of a scene in The Craft, also about girls with powers.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Well 'evil' is even stretching it for Tabitha, but she's the only Brotherhood mutant in the Bayville Sirens. She is however more open to physical aggression, and is willing to fight the police when they're busted.
  • "Walk on the Wild Side" Episode: As the title would suggest, this has the responsible Jean choosing to form a crime fighting team.
