Recap / Wednesday S1E7 "If You Don't Woe Me by Now"

Go To

Kooky Uncle Fester pays a visit and shares his theory about the monster. Wednesday begrudgingly agrees to a date with Tyler at Crackstone's crypt.

Tropes:

  • Barehanded Blade Block: Fester blocks Wednesday's sword when she attacks him, and then zaps the blade to make her drop it.
  • But Now I Must Go: Fester is forced to leave Nevermore again when the police are closing in on him.
  • Cliffhanger: Just when it looks like Wednesday has the Hyde arrested, she finds out that Tyler is the Hyde, meaning she had Xavier wrongfully arrested.
  • Coitus Interruptus: Fester mentions a time that he went to visit Gomez at school and "didn't exactly walk in on a pillow fight." Wednesday is absolutely disgusted and begs Fester to stop talking.
  • Company Cross References: On their date in the crypt, Tyler plays Legally Blonde for Wednesday. Both the film and the show are produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Wednesday's reasons for thinking Dr. Kinbott is Laurel Gates and the one behind the Hyde attacks are fairly sound. Specifically:
    • As a psychiatrist, Kinbott could enter the hospital under the guise of visiting another patient and sneak into Mayor Walker's room to murder him.
    • Kinbott's profession would also grant her access to troubled teenagers whom she could mold and manipulate into doing her bidding.
    • The roses Kinbott gave to Eugene when she visited him in the hospital match the ones Wednesday found in Laurel Gates' room.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Nevermore has banned Hydes from attending for 30 years and Uncle Fester says anyone using them is "a next-level sicko." They're that violent.
  • Faux Horrific: "I heard you love scary movies. Prepare to be horrified." Cue Legally Blonde, which indeed startles Wednesday, who after it ends says "that was torture" — but she likes torture, hence she thanks Tyler for it.
  • Finger-Twitching Revival: Kind of hard to do this any other way with Thing.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: Wednesday's method for reviving Thing is to say she'll kill him if he dies.
  • I'll Pretend I Didn't Hear That: When Sheriff Galpin stumbles upon Tyler's date with Wednesday, it's obvious he disapproves… but because he has more pressing matters to attend to, he lets them off with a quick "I never saw the two of you here," which they readily agree to.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Thing ends up pinned to a wall with a knife stabbed through his palm.
  • In-Universe Catharsis: Wednesday and Enid are able to reconcile after getting all their issues out in the open by viciously insulting each others' faults.
  • It Always Rains at Funerals: Mayor Walker's funeral takes place during a downpour — one that oddly clears up entirely as soon as Wednesday runs off.
  • Magical Defibrillator: Parodied with Fester using his electric touch on the wounded Thing to bring him back, although it takes several tries. How that could work exactly on an undead severed hand is anybody's guess.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Xavier is arrested for Tyler's crimes, he tells Wednesday he should have let Rowan kill her.
  • Noodle Incident: The Kalamazoo incident. Fester still blames Thing for it, and Thing's first reaction is to throttle Fester.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Wednesday is genuinely distraught with tears in her eyes when Fester is trying to save a stabbed Thing.
  • Orgy of Evidence: Wednesday finds items belonging to the Hyde's victims in Xavier's art studio. He protests that they were planted and he turns out to be telling the truth.
  • Red Herring: The episode seems all set to follow Wednesday's belief that Xavier is the Hyde and Kinbott is really Laurel Gates manipulating him. Then Kinbott is killed and Wednesday realizes too late that Tyler has been the Hyde all along.
  • Significant Anagram: The candy heiress that bought the Gates mansion left it to her caregiver after suspicious circumstances, named Teresa L. Glau. That's an anagram of Laurel Gates.
  • Threat Backfire: When Kinbott threatens to send Wednesday to a juvenile psychiatric facility, Wednesday merely scoffs that "We both know in a week, I'll be running the place."
  • Wham Shot: Wednesday getting a vision of the Hyde killing Kinbott and then turning into Tyler.
  • When She Smiles: Wednesday gets a huge grin on her face when she sees Uncle Fester.
