Recap / The Walking Dead S10 E09 "Squeeze"

Go To

Season 10, Episode 9

Daryl’s group begins fighting their way out of Alpha’s cave.

  • Best Served Cold:
Carol: I don’t just want to kill Alpha, I want to hurt her. I want her to beg for forgiveness, and then I’ll kill her.
  • Call-Back:
    • Negan joined the Whisperers in "What It Always Is".
    • Way back in Season 1 in "TS-19", Carol says she's a little bit claustrophobic. That comes full swing here, and it's clear she's not just a little claustrophobic.
  • Continuity Nod: Negan explains to Alpha that his own empire fell due to treachery and moles in Season 8.
  • Cathartic Scream: Carol roars at Alpha when the latter smugly watches the group having been caught in her trap.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    • Negan just barely keeps it under control, but there’s no mistaking the tone in his voice when he repeats Alpha saying "reward" when he finds her naked.
    • Jerry of all people gets a few moments as his usual chipper demeanor cracks due to the situation:
Jerry: I'm just a 6'2 dude who had trouble fitting into airplane bathrooms. Why wouldn't I be OK?
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: Negan believes he’s going to be either executed or punished when he’s led out by Alpha and forced to strip. He turns around to also find Alpha naked and eager to thank him for voicing his suspicions about Gamma.
  • Fan Disservice: No disrespect to Samantha Morton of course, but nobody really wanted to see the disheveled, filthy Alpha naked.
  • Foreshadowing: Before they have sex, Negan asks if Alpha seducing him is some kind of "praying mantis situation" where she cuts his head off afterwards. Three episodes later, it is Negan who kills Alpha by slicing her throat and then cutting her head off.
  • I Hate Past Me: Negan makes it clear in his fearful rant to Alpha that he considers his past self a monster, even if he admits he thought becoming a monster was what the world and his people needed.
  • Irony: Despite appearing to be at a disadvantage due to her injured ankle, Kelly ends up being the first of the group to escape the cave.
  • Never Found the Body: At the end of the episode, the group seems to all but accept that Connie and Magna must’ve been killed in the explosion and ensuing cave-in. However, Daryl and Kelly refuse to give up, the former going to look for another way into the cave, and the latter quickly asserting they must flee the scene regardless since walkers and Whisperers will be drawn by the sound of the explosion.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The trailer for season 10B, first seen after the midseason finale’s airing, featured a scene of Jerry screaming in pain when the walkers in the tunnel begin to grab his feet. In the episode proper, however, the walkers thankfully only chew up his shoe and don’t make it to his actual body, the aforementioned scream never taking place.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Just when the group is nearly free of the cave, Carol doubles back to blow half of the horde up with dynamite. Slipping up causes the cave exit the group has dug to begin to collapse, and Connie and Magna are still trapped inside when the dynamite goes off.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Negan literally buts in on Alpha as she’s relieving herself at a latrine. It’s subverted, however when it turns out the latrine is at the edge of their camp for hygiene... not privacy.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • The usually chipper, or at worst easy-going Jerry begins getting more and more distressed in the tight quarters of the cave, and also becomes more snarky since he has a particularly rough time thanks to his size. When Kelly finds the dynamite, we see Jerry at perhaps the most dead serious he’s ever been in his tenure on the show (other than when he killed the Savior Gunther to rescue Ezekiel).
    • Carol’s claustrophobia renders her a genuinely distraught, sobbing mess, and for the first time in ages she almost qualifies as The Load since she’s too distressed from both their predicament and her obsession with killing Alpha to do much besides panic.
    • Negan also appears genuinely fearful when he’s led out into the woods alone by Alpha, and nearly breaks down when she orders him to strip.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Carol found the horde, but it seemingly has come at the cost of Connie and Magna’s lives.
  • Shameful Strip: Negan believes he’s being forced to do this by Alpha, only to realize she’s making him strip for her in a... suggestive way, instead.
  • Ship Tease: There's a quick moment early on when Daryl helps Connie to safety and they cling to each other for just a beat too long. Later, when Connie (and Magna) are trapped in the cave due to Carol's actions, Daryl is extremely distressed and Carol (who previously acknowledged she saw something between Daryl and Connie) sobbingly points out that it's because "you cared about her, and now she's gone because of me!"
  • Spotting the Thread:
    • Daryl was able to figure out Carol is claustrophobic without her having told him.
    • Negan was able to deduce Gamma betrayed the horde’s location to the group since she’s the only one close enough to Alpha who also operates along the border.
  • Uncertain Doom: It’s unclear if Connie and Magna survived the cave-in, but the group has no way of knowing either way due to the exits being destroyed.
  • Villainous Crush: Well.. Alpha’s certainly eager to jump Negan’s bones, we’ll leave it at that.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Magna begins chewing out Carol for getting the group trapped in the cave in the first place. Daryl and Aaron point out that it’s hardly the best time for it, however.
    • Daryl vents to Carol his frustration with her lack of self-preservation and refusal to be honest with her.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?:
    • The heavyset Jerry is visibly disheartened when he faces a tight squeeze through a crevasse that even his thin compatriots are struggling with.
    • Carol is claustrophobic, so being trapped in a cave isn't comfortable for her to begin with, even before getting to the aforementioned crevasse.
