Recap / The Real Ghostbusters S 5 E 18 The Ghostbusters Live From Al Capones Tomb

Go To

The Ghostbusters are on live TV, hosting a show about Al Capone's tomb as part of Peter's latest money-grubbing plan. He and Egon are talking (with the latter feeling awkward as he's bad at lying, though Peter tries to claim he's nervous about being on TV) while Ray and Winston are in Ecto-2. Peter makes up a fake legend about Al Capone coming back as a ghost at midnight every ten years, then plays a history of Capone. Then, Peter interviews Janine, Louis, and Slimer, but Egon gets a PKE reading.

Just then, the real ghost of Al Capone arrives and tells the Ghostbusters to stop talking about him. As midnight strikes, Louis pretends to be the ghost, while Peter teases the real ghost. Then, the Capone ghost teleports the Ghostbusters and Slimer away. When a car drives past and fires ectoplasmic bullets, Egon realises that they're in the spirit dimension.

Then, a ghost exits the car and takes them to see "the boss" (the Capone ghost). At the house, Capone arrives, weilding a strange, baseball-bat-esque weapon, and declares he was offended by Peter's speech. The Ghostbusters try to fire at Capone, but the proton packs don't work in the spirit world. Some other ghosts enter and get into a fight with Capone, so the Ghostbusters and Slimer run out of the building.

Another ghost drives them all to some more ghosts, who are working for Capone but want him gone so they can be legal businessmen. They offer to bring the Ghostbusters and Slimer back if they can get rid of Capone, so the Ghostbusters agree to the deal, pretending Slimer is their boss. They ask for help making their technology work, so the leader of the ghost group gives Egon "magic" crystals.

Ray and Winston repair Ecto-2, when a female ghost flirts with Ray. Then, it turns out she already has a boyfriend, who's Capone's lackey Manny. He chases Ray and Winston, but luckily Egon and Peter trap him. Then, the Ghostbusters and the rebelling ghosts attack Capone, who angrily grows to a giant. Winston determines that Capone can be trapped if they destroy the bat, so he ejects Ray and flies into the bat with his proton pack set on self-destruct, escaping at the last moment. When the bat explodes, Peter, Ray, and Egon trap Capone, and the leader of the defector ghosts teleports everyone back.

Back in the normal dimension, no one believes the Ghostbusters' story, but they think that they did a good "show" by disappearing. Then, they reveal that Peter agreed to do a second special the next day, causing the rest of the Ghostbusters to chase him angrily.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism:
    • Egon doesn't believe the ghost leader's claim that the crystals are magic, despite being in a ghost dimension that breaks the laws of physics.
    • The others don't believe the Ghostbusters went to the spirit world, despite Slimer being clearly visible and a ghost.
  • Artistic License – History: Al Capone was a real person, but contrary to what Peter said in the episode, he was not an only child (he had brothers) nor did he have any reservations about hurting women (it was only certain women he didn't hurt).

  • Oh, Crap!: Ray looks nervous when he realises the proton packs don't work in the spirit world.
