The family settles into Smallville. Lois begins to investigate Morgan Edge's business interest in Smallville. Clark tests the range of Jordan's new abilities. Jonathan discovers that in the wake of the fight at the quarry, fitting in at Smallville High is not as easy as he'd anticipated.

Tropes:

  • Actually a Doombot: Captain Luthor attacks General Lane's base and is defeated by Superman. It's then revealed the armor is being piloted by a drone and Luthor is safe in another location.
  • Brutal Honesty: The AI of Jor-El is pretty blunt in telling Clark that Jordan is an Inadequate Inheritor and that his powers will never even come close to those of his father.
  • The Bully: Sean and his crew steal Jonathan's playbook and pick on him during football training as payback for his brother kissing Sarah.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Even though she just arrived, Lois cannot stay away from controversy, immediately confronting Morgan Edge at the town hall conference for him exploiting other small communities in the past.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Captain Luthor has his ship rigged to explode and crash towards the city as a back-up plan to escape after Superman has him on the ropes.
  • Face Palm: Jonathan and Jordan bury their faces in their hands when Lois begins questioning Morgan Edge, after she had just warned them to not start trouble.
  • Flashback: Captain Luthor has one to his Earth's version of Superman killing a bunch of soldiers, among them Sam Lane.
  • I Have This Friend: Chrissy Beppo's "editor" who wants to publish Lois's stories is actually Chrissy herself.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Lois's response to Clark asking her if she knew about Sam Lane stockpiling Kryptonite is to snark that the bottle of wine she's currently drinking doesn't stand a chance tonight.
  • It's Personal: The Superman from Captain Luthor's Earth ravaged his world and killed his close friend and comrade, the resident version of General Lane.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Clark tells Lois that he feels their family is closer "this week" than it was "last week."
  • Mythology Gag: Chrissy's last name, Beppo, was the name of a superpowered monkey from the Silver Age Superman comics.
  • Parents as People: Clark and Lois are once again seen struggling with their responsibilities throughout the episode, but the family as a whole seems to be coming a bit closer together by the end of the episode.
  • Properly Paranoid: General Lane has sequestered nearly all the world's supply of Kryptonite to protect Superman from those who would use it against him. This makes it impossible for Luthor to get more, at least for now.
  • Rewatch Bonus: A second viewing will show you that the "Captain Luthor" who attacks General Lane's base is moving rather robotically.
  • Shame If Something Happened: When confronted about his broken promises in other towns, Morgan Edge admits that he fell short but was willing to take a risk, just like he's doing with Smallville. He then adds that he could always not invest in Smallville if it would supposedly hurt the town, threatening to pull a critical source of funding and making Lois look like the bad guy.
  • Shoot the Messenger: Captain Luthor kills the arms dealer who tells him that he is out of the Kryptonite he planned to steal.
  • Swapped Roles: In this episode, Jonathan (previously introduced as The Ace) is shown struggling with his life and being envious of his brother, even snapping at him, while Jordan is initially on a high note due to being excited to learn mastering his powers. At the end of the episode, both are brought down to the same level, agreeing to help each other through their struggles.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: After Edge censors and remodels her critical article about him into a propaganda piece, Lois angrily quits her job at the Planet, starting to work for Chrissy Beppo instead.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Captain Luthor has one after realizing that there is no Kryptonite around anymore.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Captain Luthor wants to stop Superman from destroying the world, because that's what his Kal-El did on his world.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In contrast to the pilot, Superman twice defeats Luthor's armor, since without Kryptonite he can't operate it at its full effectiveness.
  • Yes-Man: Even after hearing what he did to other communities, Kyle tries to rationalize Morgan Edge's flaws away, insisting that he would still be good for Smallville, as something inadequate is better than nothing at all.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Jonathan encourages his brother not to listen to what Jor-El's AI said.
