Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S3 E35 "Bam Ui Pati!"

Go To

Star tries to cheer up Pony Head over the loss of her horn.

Tropes:

  • Addictive Foreign Soap Opera: Pony Head has apparently spent her time since her defeat by Meteora binge-watching Bam Ui Pati, a Korean soap opera about a vampire and a pop singer. Unlike most examples, the show does include subtitles.
  • An Aesop: Bam Ui Pati has the vampire teach the singer that she shouldn't fall into depression because of one bad day. Doubles as the aesop of the episode, as learned by Pony Head at the end.
  • Artificial Limbs: At the end of the episode, Pony Head replaces her lost horn with an artificial one.
  • Bishie Sparkle: The vampire displays this in Bam Ui Pati. It even charms the hospital receptionist.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: The subtitles on Bam Ui Pati seem accurate enough, except for the part about the singer's cursed "body bone".
  • Call-Back: Pony Head's ex-boyfriend, Seahorse, returns, having last been seen in "Demoncism".
  • Chekhov's Gun: Seahorse uses a 3D printer to create decoy Pony Heads to distract Star. At the end of the episode, he uses it to make a prosthetic horn for Pony Head.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The vampire in Bam Ui Pati dresses all in black, but is a nice guy who lifts the singer out of her sad mood. He never cursed her in the first place, as she believed.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Pony Head knocks Seahorse unconscious and drives the company van, only to crash a few seconds later after a wild ride.
  • Empathic Environment: The thunderstorm Pony Head gets into disappears when she ends her depression, making room for the sun.
  • Foreshadowing: Star believes that Pony Head losing her horn means she can't fly anymore, only for Hornanne to point out that she herself can fly despite not having one. At the end of the episode, Pony Head starts flying again after breaking out of her funk, proving that she hadn't lost that ability, but was simply too depressed to use it.
  • Heroic BSoD: Pony Head hasn't been herself since losing her horn, and wouldn't come out of her room and talk to anyone.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Hornanne asks if she can get a 3D-printed horn, Pony Head (the biggest Attention Whore on the show) scolds her for trying to make it all about her.
  • Ice-Cream Koan: When Khrysthalle sounded like she was about to make an important point, Star asks what she is talking about, leading Khrysthalle to respond with the same question.
  • Idol Singer: The main character of Bam Ui Pati is one.
  • It's All About Me: Khrysthalle.
    • While Star is worrying about Pony Head, Khrysthalle, from out of nowhere, tells her to imagine if she woke up one morning "so beautiful". Star assumed this was some kind of rhetoric, but it wasn't.
    • When Pony Head states that she wants her "favorite sister" to place her new horn on her head, Khrysthalle assumes she's talking about her (she actually meant Star).
  • Lack of Empathy: Pony Head's sisters have little sympathy for her current state. They call in Star to get Pony Head out of bed because they want to have "something to do".
  • Made of Iron: Both Pony Head and Seahorse survive the Reflectacorp bus crash unscathed. Seahorse even states that he is unkillable.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: The male lead in Bam Ui Pati is a vampire who apparently places curses on people and charms people with his bishie face. Then it turns out he never cursed the singer in the first place.
  • Overly Long Scream: When Star jumps out of the window to go after Pony Head, she falls for a long time, screaming all the way down.
  • Pretty Boy: All the male characters in Bam Ui Pati are this, designed with feminine eyes or a Bishie Sparkle in the vampire's case.
  • Romantic Vampire Boy: Bam Ui Pati! has a vampire as the romantic male lead.
  • She's Back: Ever since Pony Head lost her horn, she wouldn't come out of her room and stop watching Bam Ui Pati, but after hearing the message of the episode, Pony Head gets her mojo back.
  • Show Within a Show: The episode title refers to to the Korean soap opera that Pony Head watches in the plot, but also serves as an allegorical parallel to what she is going through.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: The Twins just show up for a single scene, then disappear after Star turns her back for just a moment.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: After having Seahorse do everything for her and even printing her a new horn, Pony Head breaks up with him. Well, that's how you know she's back.
