Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S3 E19 "Sweet Dreams"

Go To

Star discovers she travels through multiple dimensions in her dreams.

Tropes:

  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: After Star tries to get some answers from her parents but ends up convinced she'll be better off if they don't know about her dreamwalking, Marco is about to add something but is silenced by Star kicking him under the table.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Eclipsa manages to save Marco and Star from the void, with a little help from Glossaryck.
  • Big Eater: Star has a dream about eating dozens of Goblin Dogs. When she wakes up, she discovers she had actually eaten that many in her sleep. And burps up the receipt to prove it.
  • Call-Back: Star's Golden Super Mode from "Toffee" makes a return.
  • The Cameo:
    • Roy, the Goblin Dogs vendor, appears along with his truck when Star brings them to her bedroom in her sleep.
    • Ludo is still in the void, as seen when Marco ends up getting dragged by Star in her sleep-travelling.
  • Chained to a Bed: Marco chains Star to her bed to prevent her from flying off to another dimension during her dreams. He even binds his foot to her so he'll wake up if she does. The chains don't hold her and Marco ends up being dragged along when she breaks free.
  • Concealing Canvas: Eclipsa turns out to have a network of secret passages through the castle, including one hidden behind the portrait of the Captain in Star's room.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The sea captain portrait from "Blood Moon Ball" reappears. It winks to Eclipsa, showing it to be sentient.
    • Star turns out to be eating Goblin Dogs in her sleep.
    • During Star's second trip, she drags Marco through the void from "Ludo in the Wild" (and Ludo himself is there, where they left him at the end of "Toffee"). And the bag of chips Star threw in after him.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Marco chaining Star to her bed so she won't travel to different dimensions in her sleep looks suggestive of something else when it's put out of context. Nicely spoofed here.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Marco seems to understand Glossaryck's "Globgor" at the end. Apparently, he is unsure if Star can uncover the secret behind her dreams alone and so is Marco.
  • Let's Meet the Meat: The Goblin Dogs in Star's dream ask her to eat them, and they cheer as she chews on them.
  • Marshmallow Dream: After her first Goblin Dogs dream, Star is chewing on her pillows. But it's subverted because she was getting Goblin Dogs in her sleep.
  • Might as Well Not Be in Prison at All: Turns out that Eclipsa has access to a network of tunnels that she used to use as a child, letting her leave her tower whenever she pleases.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Marco's reaction to the chain he used to bind his foot to Star's bed gets sucked through the portal along with the former.
    • Also, Marco has this reaction when he realizes who is the woman who saved them from being lost in the void.
  • Power Incontinence: Star is unable to control her Mewberty form's actions and powers.
  • Sleep Walking: Star turns out to be using her "dip-down" form to travel through dimensions in her sleep.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Star wakes up from a dream of eating flying Goblin Dogs, only to realize she had actually eaten dozens of Goblin Dogs in her sleep somehow.
  • They Would Cut You Up: River says (somewhat jokingly) that Star would be taken away for "weeks of examinations" if she was going into "Mewberty" mode involuntarily.
  • Wrong Context Magic:
    • Moon says that the Mewberty form is supposed to take years of training to master and shouldn't emerge involuntarily, as it does with Star.
    • While sleepwalking, Star is able to open dimensional portals without the aid of dimensional scissors.
