- Chekhov's Gun: Early in the episode, SpongeBob delivers food to an anchovy on the bus. Later on, this same anchovy recognizes SpongeBob as a friend and thus calls off the fight between the anchovies and faux-chovies.
- Continuity Nod: SpongeBob serves krabby patties to the anchovies the same way he did in "Help Wanted".
- Headphones Equal Isolation: Squidward drowns out the meeping by wearing headphones, though he eventually loses them.
- Identity Amnesia: Anyone who spends time with the anchovies (or faux-chovies) will start meeping and become a faux-chovy.
- Medium-Shift Gag:
- A close-up shows Patrick with live-action hands.
