Recap / Pokémon EC 49 We Are the Champions

Go To

The championship battle between Flash and Shining reaches its conclusion. With both Flash and Springer literally on their knees against Galladin's overwhelming power, they must find their resolve and get back up to finish the battle. Through their bond, they become stronger than ever, unlocking a new power previously thought impossible to them. But is this enough to defeat Shining Armor and Galladin and finally become the champions of Equestria?

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Now at the climax of their journey, Springer finally evolves into a Lucario after his and Flash's bond overwhelms the Everstone energy he absorbed. This evolution also changes Springer's ability from Steadfast to Justified.
  • All Animals Are Dogs: Celestia pats Springer on the head and scratches him behind the ears, causing him to growl happily like a regular dog.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Flash and Springer had already done this countless times before, but this instance takes the cake. After it had already been established that Springer had been exposed the the energy of an Everstone, and thus couldn't evolve, their bond becomes so powerful here that it overwhelms the Everstone energy Springer absorbed, allowing him to evolve into a Lucario!
  • The Big Damn Kiss: After an entire series of Flash and Twilight slowly bonding together and various Ship Tease moments throughout their journey, they embrace each other in a kiss after Flash achieves his dream of becoming champion and confess their feelings for each other. They pull apart after a minute, agreeing it was nice, and Flash almost kisses her again before they see the Fantastic Fireworks being set off, and simply watch them while cuddling together.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Pinkie claims that she planned to throw a party for Flash regardless of the outcome of his battle with Shining Armor. Since he won, she gets to throw him a Victory Party, but claims if he lost he would have gotten a 'sorry you lost but you were still awesome' party.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: For both Flash and Springer. After everything they went through together, they accomplished their dream and became Equestria champions, and still have all the friends they made along the way. In addition, Flash and Twilight finally realize their feelings for each other and seem to become an Official Couple together, and Springer evolves into a Lucario thanks to how powerful his bond with Flash has become, which was previously thought to have been impossible for him due to the Everstone energy he absorbed.
  • Fantastic Fireworks: At the end of the chapter, fireworks are set off to celebrate the ending of the Equestria League and the new champion, which also conveniently happens immediately after Flash and Twilight share their First Kiss together, doubling as Fireworks of Love. The fireworks explode into the shape of different Pokémon, including Pikachu, Thawn, Hisscor, and Aquana.
  • Fireworks of Love: Immediately after Flash and Twilight confess their feelings for each other and share their First Kiss together, becoming an Official Couple, fireworks are set off to celebrate the ending of the Equestria League and the new champion. This interrupts Flash as he is about to kiss Twilight again, but the two decide to cuddle together while watching the fireworks.
  • First Kiss: Though Flash's first kiss was stolen by Sunset earlier, this chapter is the first official kiss between him and Twilight.
  • Forceful Kiss: Downplayed between Flash and Twilight. When the two tell each other how they are each other's light and hold hands, Flash reflexively moves forward and presses his lips against hers in a surprise kiss. Twilight gasps in shock at this, but doesn't pull away, instead squeezing his hand tighter and kissing him back.
  • Graceful Loser: Upon losing his championship title to Flash, Shining Armor shakes hands with him and declares he has proven without a doubt of being worthy of protecting Equestria.
  • Giving Up on Logic: When Mic questions how Springer was able to make an Aura Sphere so large in the climax of the battle, Celestia comments that she gave up trying to expect logic to ever work with Flash and Springer a long time ago.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Springer's evolution serves as one for him. After he evolves into a Lucario he becomes much stronger and is able to fight evenly with Galladin.
  • If Only You Knew: After Springer evolves into a Lucario, Mic declares it "Unbelivable". Celestia just whispers "You have no idea how right you are..." in response, knowing about the Everstone energy Springer absorbed, which was beleived to have made it impossible for him to ever evolve.
  • Love Confession: Flash and Twilight both tell each other that they are each other's light and the only reason they have become who they are now, before sharing a passionate kiss together.
  • Magic Missile Storm: Springer's Aura Sphere Barrage attack makes its return in this form. After losing access to this attack after no longer having Double Team, here Springer creates one gigantic Aura Sphere and then splitting it into a thousand normal sized Aura Spheres and raining them all down on Galladin.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Downplayed; even though Shining doesn't say anything, he and Galladin both stare at Springer and Flash in shock when they see them on their knees and unresponsive due to the damage they received.
  • Mythology Gag: The scene where Flash and his team are inducted into the Hall of Fame after becoming champions are based on the endings of the games, where after defeating the champion the player and their current team are put in the hall of fame. Flash even sees his picture of himself and all his Pokémon posing as cool as possible together.
  • No Range Like Point-Blank Range: At the climax of the battle, after Galladin is struck by several of the Aura Spheres from Aura Sphere Barrage, he uses Sacred Sword to strike the rest in the air and make them explode like fireworks. However, Springer comes in through the smoke carrying one more Aura Sphere, and instead of throwing it thrusts it directly at Galladin as he falls toward him and striking his sword with it. This is ultimately too much for Galladin and he finally collapses after the dust settles.
  • Only the Worthy May Pass: After Flash defeats Shining Armor, he is brought to the Hall of Fame. It is described as a place that "only the best of the best are permitted to enter". It is normally reserved so that only Champions and former Champions are allowed to enter, with Celestia and Luna being a rare exception. Since Flash defeated Shining and earned the title of Champion himself, he is thus now allowed to enter.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: Towards the end of the chapter, Flash tells Twilight what he saw while he was unconscious, how he was alone in darkness and his own voice telling him he can't win, until Twilight appeared to him and encouraged him to keep going and telling him how much he helped her. Twilight admits she doesn't remember any of this, but also says there was a moment when she was praying for him to wake up and she blacked out, and then when she came to Flash was back on his feet, implying she may have accidentally connected to Flash's aura.
  • Smooch of Victory: After Flash defeats Shining Armor and becomes the new champion, he and Twilight later share their First Kiss together while celebrating at Flash's Victory Party. Though it is played with since Flash was the one who initiated it by kissing Twilight first, but she puts up no resistance and quickly kisses him back.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Springer manages to overcome the Everstone energy that has kept him from evolving for years thanks to his bond with Flash overwhelming it, resulting in him finally evolving into a Lucario!
  • Titled After the Song: This chapter shares the same name as the famous song "We Are the Champions" by Queen.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Springer evolves into a Lucario, and gains the ability Justified, which increases his attack strength every time he is hit with a Dark-type attack like Night Slash.
  • Waxing Lyrical: The lyric from the original Pokémon them song, "The very best, like no one ever was", is said twice in the chapter.
    • When Twilight yells at Springer and Flash to stand back up and keep fighting, she reminds Flash of how he wants to be the the Equestria League Champion, and uses these same words.
    • The narration itself says them later, when Springer creates the largest Aura Sphere ever seen, Flash and Springer's friends all smile in joy, knowing that to create an attack like that meant the two of them had truly "become the very best... like no one ever was".
  • Wham Episode: Springer manages to overwhelm the Everstone energy and evolve into a Lucario, followed by Flash defeating Shining Armor and officially becoming champion.
